Only 3 other Frenches are listed in this KY 1790 census: Benjamin French (Woodford Co., KY), William French (Fayette Co., KY), and John French (Lincoln Co., KY). David moved from Mercer Co., KY to Jefferson Co., KY in 1796. Continued with FFA Chart #193. This John French died in 1791 in Lincoln Co., KY and had married Katherine, who then married Henry Daugherty in 1791 in Lincoln Co., KY.
The surname was originally Scheiffle, but was Americanized to Shively. Johann Shively emigrated in 1738 from Germany, arriving in Philadelphia, PA on the Palatine ship, the St. Andrew. The ship came from Rotterdam. He migrated to York Co., PA, and had 4 children. His first child, John Christian Shively, was born 25 Oct 1746, married Anna Marie Bashore ca. 1767 and moved to Berkeley Co., VA. Then they migrated to Jefferson Co., Kentucky, ca. 1780, where he had 1,000 acres patented on MannÕs Lick, and he is the one who donated the land for the town of Shively, Kentucky just SW of Louisville. He had a mill there in 1810 as well as a tavern; the area was called the Pond Settlement. He also established the Mill Creek Presbyterian Church, all areas which should be researched for a possible French ancestor. The will of Christian Shively of Jefferson Co., KY, dated 28 Dec 1826, proved 6 Feb 1826 (new calendar would be 1827) lists his daughter Margaret French, see the Shively Genealogy of PA and KY. Research indicating MargaretÕs father was Jacob and not Christian is incorrect per this will of 1826 which clearly states that ChristianÕs daughter Margaret was already married by 1826 to a man named French. Margaret Shively or Shivley was born in 1774 in PA.
Looking at the Shively DNA Project, Christian Shively was born in 1683 in Oberdorf, Canton of Basel, Switzerland and died ca. 1752 in Lancaster Co., PA. Peter French also lived in Lancaster Co., PA, of FFA Chart #129. PeterÕs father was Col. John French, b. ca. 1742 in PA where he owned 500 acres, and d. 25 Dec 1787 in Hagerstown, Washington Co., MD (very close to Hedgesville, Berkeley Co., WV). He m. Maria Barbara in 1760 in PA – a name common to this entire French family, as Jacob named his first daughter Barbara. John FrenchÕs children were Peter, Catherine, Marie Elizabeth, John, and George, all common names in this French family. Peter French eventually moved to Knox Co., TN.
