Reply from Mara French:

Hi Nigel,

The short answer is no, I haven’t heard from anyone or else I would have forwarded you the email.

The long answer is a real culture shock, as at 75 years old, I’ve just learned to make peace with it. Basically, my generation is trying to get rid of stuff and downsize. My son’s generation has totally different taste and doesn’t want these objects even if they are free. His children’s generation, the millennials, don’t even want to talk about it — they would rather live in a trailer or a garage or a room with no kitchen, work hard for 6 months, then quit and travel around the world and do the same thing the next year. They are extremely non-materialistic.

What has happened here in California, about 10 years ago the Thrift Shops multiplied like crazy as the older generation was dying off and shop owners thought they could make money off their donations. Now 10 years later the Thrift Shops are not taking donations any longer because they are packed full, and half of them here have closed as they were not selling anything. The problem with this is people are starting to simply dump their stuff on open land. Even homeless people don’t want it because they want the government to supply shelters for them so they can be more mobile and move each season to better weather. The last thing they want is a heavy piano or organ.

So, on the other hand, the piano stores here are closing. More people are buying electric keyboards. Old cars aren’t selling because they are unsafe without airbags. Antiques aren’t selling because they just bog you down and are only to look at and not functional. It is almost more expensive to buy a house than to rent. Once you’ve paid off your house, all your savings is in your house and is not liquid by any means, so you need to sell your house and piano and organ in order to have money to live.

I would say the field to get into is travel, AirB&B, rentals, medical, and utilities. So, what I’m doing about it is, simply enjoying my antiques for myself and not thinking of saving them for my son, having only 1 new car and selling any other cars but using UBER when I need to, just knowing that everything will become robotic one of these days and we all won’t have to lift a finger, especially to play the piano.

Yes, I know, not good news if you’re in my generation. I’m glad I sold my beloved classic British Triumph 1974 TR6 because no one will want it someday even though it is worth something like your organ. I sold my collection of classic cars all to people my age who dreamt of those cars when they were young, but they will keep them a few years, and then what? I could see this coming, plus my responses to maneuvering those cars were not fast enough while driving the TR6 and I was afraid I’d have an accident with a big truck. Because the TR6 is British, I named it Nigel, so knowing your name made me smile. I would recommend giving away your organ to a church as a donation and taking it off your taxes. Good luck to you. Mara

P.S. I know many people in California who are now “move east young man” because California is ridiculously too expensive, the rules are too stringent, and people are afraid to talk about sensitive matters as they may be killed if they are on the wrong side, and I’m a Republican and always on the wrong side out here. Some key places they go are Arkansas, Alabama, and Nashville Tennessee.

2. I have an old French piano for sale and wanted to know if you know of anyone that might want to buy it?  It does need repair of a couple of keys and tuned, otherwise it’s it excellent condition. Email Donna M. Kramer at Donna.Kramer2@va.gov.

3. I have a Jesse French baby grand to sell.  It has been restored inside and out and is in good condition.  Would you be interested or would you know how to direct me to someone who would want to purchase it? Email me at gseard@yahoo.com.

4. We have an upright Jesse French piano. SSN 63481. Have been unable to find a new home for it. Selling the house; closing on house tomorrow. We could likely have access for another week. Any interest?? Please email me, Deborah Whittern, at dwhittern.dw@gmail.com.

5. Jennifer Gray, email: jennifergl1213@aol.com, dated 27 May 2019. Good afternoon. My name is Jennifer Gray and I’m the owner of a Jesse French piano. I “inherited” it when I bought my home. I don’t know where else to turn for help as I have to rehome the piano and I don’t know how. I’ve been told it has no value, but I don’t believe that. I believe there may be someone out there who could use the parts at the very least as it’s clearly so old. I don’t wish to make any money, I’d just like to reassure myself that no one wants it before it’s simply hauled away and “disposed of”. I’m attaching photos. Do you have any ideas??
