[1] Janet French Crisp, cdaero@theofficenet.com (good in 2010). Email on May 18, 2009: If we all keep looking then surely one day there will be a piece that will fall into place and we will know. I also recently did some research on Reason French who is a few years younger than my John and is in Shelby also on I think its the 1850 census. Reason was born in Cincinnati, OH, just next door to Warren, OH where my John's first wife Lydia Spurling came from. I haven't been able to find out who Reason's parents are, although I found a fair amount on his 4 children. Keep that in mind as you look around. Also, I have looked fairly extensively into David and Daniel who were in Shelby County early on. I have never been able to make any connection to them.
Daniel and David French #188 FFA - argument on whether one of them could be the father of John French 1.1. I donÕtÕ think that David French could be JohnÕs father as David has a son named John W. French, born 1829 in OH who marries and has his own children. Daniel could be JohnÕs father if Daniel had more than one marriage. Daniel was born 9 Aug 1791 in New Jersey. He married Amy Tingle on the 25 Feb 1819 in Lebanon, Warren, OH and they had 7 children together. However, Daniel was age 28 when he married Amy Tingle and was definitely old enough that he could have had a previous marriage before the one to Amy. Daniel dies 9 Apr 1843 in Shelby, IN.
I recently found the 1820 census for a D. French in Lebanon, Warren, OH. I think this is Daniel. It shows a male age 26 to 45, which would be Daniel, a female 16 to 25 which would be his wife Amy and a female child age 0 to 10 which would be their daughter Elizabeth Ann. There is no male child age 0 to 10 listed. If John was DanielÕs son and living with him he would be on this census, so it is not looking likely that my John is DanielÕs son. There are 3 other FrenchÕs on this 1820 Warren, OH census that do have sons the right age so I am going to take a hard look at them.
There was an early Daniel French in this area, a brick mason and built a beautiful brick hotel that was on one of the main highways.

[3] Cheryl Bird, email: cdb58@hotmail.com. (email address outdated) My Great Grandmother is Dora Ann French. She was born on January 30, 1868 in Marietta, Johnson County, Indiana. She was married to my Great Grandfather, James Alexander Beard. Dora Ann died on October 15, 1948 in Las Animas, Bent County, Colorado. James was born on November 3, 1862 in Muskingum County, Ohio. James also died in Las Animas, Bent County, Colorado. He died on February 7, 1947. The parents of Dora Ann French are Tunis J. French who was born about 1850 in Indiana, and Elizabeth Layman, who was also born about 1850 in Indiana. I do not have any more information on my French side of the family. I do not know if Vermillion County is near Johnson County, but maybe someone here knows about my French Family.

[8] Ruth French Clewis, email: Timmafruth@aol.com (good in 2005).
Ruth French, St Clair County IL (b. 1938 IL).
Her father: Clarence French (b 1914, d 1986 St Clair County IL) & Dorothea Oppitz (b 1915, Lebanon, Warren County OH, d 2001 St Clair County IL). Children to this union include Ruth Ellen, Joan Marie, Betty Jane, Michael Clarence and Dale Ann.
Willard Lawrence French (b Lawrence County, OH) & Theresa Hamm (Caseyville, St Clair County IL). Pop always said that we were Irish, but do not know if he only meant his mother or both parents. Children were Willard (Bill), Clarence Charles, Marie Ann (Harold Walthes) and John.
Francis (Frank) Marion French (b June 1840, d June 12, 1907, Lawrence County, OH) & Mary Slavens (Slavins) (b abt 1851 Scioto County, OH; I've found not death record for Mary, but Frank lived with his daughter Lacy Brown in 1900 with his son Willard Upper Twp, Lawrence County OH). Note that Slavens is definitely from Ireland. Francis is buried in the Grand Army of Republic cemetery. Also note that the Elizabeth Twp where the French family resided was directly next to the land where Mary and her family lived in Scioto County.) Mary is the daughter of Daniel and Lucy (Morgan) Slavens.
Jeremiah (J/John) French (b abt 1814, OH?) & Lydia (Ida) Smith (b abt 1817 OH?; married April 19, 1837 Athens County OH). Children included Mary, Joseph, Francis, Alexander, Nancy, Isaak, Maria, Elmira, Albert, Zelpdea, Jeremiah & Ida. Reference 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880 OH census records.
Charles French (b bet 1780-1770, OH?/VA?/England?) & Sarah Robinett (b abt 1785, Washington County OH, married April 10, 1804 Washington County OH) Children included George (Rachel Biggerstaff married April 4, 1822 Athens County OH), William (Fanny Shannon m Jan 24, 1828 Athens County OH), Charles (Rebecca Brookes married June 12, 1842 Athens County OH), Emily (William Witney married April 1, 1841 Athens County OH), Susannah (b abt 1825, d July 14, 1871 Athens County OH), Jeremiah (Lydia Smith), Sarah (b abt 1854 OH) and Nancy (John Case married October 2, 1828 Athens County OH).
I do not have a definite link to Charles French, but Jeremiah and Lydia (Smith) French were married in Athens County OH, where I found Charles and Sarah's family. I truly believe Charles is Jeremiah's father, and Francis Marion French named his 2nd son Charles also. I really wish that I had a definite link to this as it would open a whole other family to the French's.

SHELBY COUNTY HISTORY
----------
St. Paul, Ind., Oct. 18, 1910-- Editor Republican---
Being the oldest native born in Shelby county, I take the liberty to address
you as such and through your paper will speak of some of the early
things. First, my father was one of the first to come to this county.
He moved here in an ox cart with mother and a young child in the cart with a
cow tied behind, and after they left Whitewater there was no road and he had to
cut the spice brush out of the way in many places. He settled in the
Green woods in Shelby county before Shelbyville was
thought of and some time before it was laid out by John Walker. John Hendricks had
settled on the east end of town near where the stillhouse
once was, and started a tan yard. When my father came here he had a few
hundred dollars and could begin to improve. He was a brick mason and made
the first brick and built the first brick chimney and the first brick house in
the county. He made the first shingle roof and mother had the first cook
stove and father bought the first carriage in the county and opened the first
hotel. Father and mother for some time rode to church in an ox cart and
when he bought his carriage the people would stare at them, and when mother got
her cook stove women would come for miles to see her cook on it. Father's
barn was the first building in the county with a shingle roof and it is
standing yet, but not with the first roof. This will do as a start and I
will give you more later.
Yours as the oldest native born in Shelby county. J.
R.

[17] 1820 census, surname FRENCH. Note that
Columbiana County was formed from Jefferson and Washington Counties on 25 Mar
1803. This could tell
us that the French family didnÕt move to Columbiana County, but that they were
in the same area all the time and just the name changed. John French could have
lived with one of these families, and he would have been aged 8.

[18] Might mean something or nothing. Research from Jim Gunderson (now deceased) on Bedford Co., PA: Stephen French, a son of Daniel, a son of James, (maybe) a son of Nathaniel b. 12 Jul 1762* at Amwell, Hunterdon Co., NJ. That is from research by a Francis Cox. I do not know how good the Nathaniel connection is or whether Nathaniel is "East or West Jersey." A different researcher thinks there is a Jeremiah between James and Nathaniel. The key file for the Bedford Co. families of James + Daniel + Stephen is the orphans court records at Bedford Co. There is other research there as well. James died intestate with 8 young children (Daniel is the eldest). The court stepped in - all the children are named. Then Daniel died intestate and Stephen stepped in to try to straighten it all out about 1833**. Copies of the entire French family file was made for me in Jul 2006 by Gillian Leach, Historian in Bedford Co. Part of my East Jersey line (FFA Chart #188), Joseph P. French 1767-1826 and son Robert 1787-ca 1855 does come through the Bedford Co. area and to Allegany Co., MD. But the names James and Daniel and Stephen do not show up in the correct years.
Notes: *This might mean that Nathaniel and Jeremiah were twins. **This was the year of the vast cholera epidemic.
[19] Research by Mara French, August 2014. My real problem was in solving was in finding out that the John French of Marietta OHIO was not the same John French as in Marietta INDIANA because of age. Then only the Spurling family lived in Warren Co. OH, and the 3 households named French in Warren county all had sons under 10 in the 1820 census, but I followed them and they donÕt appear to be the correct family. So many families moved to Ohio because of the grand road built early on to the west. The 3 men in Warren Co. OH were Chauncey French (he was originally from Sandersfield, Berkshire Co., MA, and not of this line), Ira French (he is from the line of Aaron French of New Providence, Essex Co., NJ), and Otho French (he is from Frederick Co., MD). Then there is a Warren both in Belmont Co. and Washington Co. OH. Very confusing. The French in Warren Co are those in Chart #41 which does not match. IÕm thinking that JamesÕ father was Thomas in Salem, Jefferson Co., OH, but have absolutely no proof yet. ThereÕs also a French in Warren Co. who is on Chart #188 which matches DNA Gp 1. Then there is Daniel who might be a relative.

The Early
Baptists of Ohio
By Albert W.
Newman, 1894
Ohio was
settled late in the present period, but Baptists were early on the ground. In
1789 a number of Baptist families from Connecticut, New York, and New Jersey
formed a settlement on the Little Miami at Columbia, now within the limits of
Cincinnati. Among these were Isaac Ferris, from Connecticut, Judge Goforth and General John Gano,
from New York, and Benjamin and Elijah Stites, from
New Jersey. Gano was a son of the famous preacher.
There was no minister in the company, but the brethren took turns in conducting
the services. In 1790 Stephen
[p. 339]
Gano, pastor of
the First Church, Providence, and brother of the general, visited the settlement, baptized three converts, and assisted in
organizing the first evangelical church north of the Ohio River. The first
pastor of the church was John Smith, who afterward became a member of the
United States Senate. By 1797 three other churches had sprung up in the
neighborhood: Miami Island, Carpenter's Run, and Clear Creek. These four united
at this time in forming the Miami Association. Turtle Creek and Little Prairie
churches soon joined the Association. The other pastors were Peter Smith, James
Lee, and Daniel Clarke. Joshua Carman and Josiah Dodge, from Kentucky, were present when the Association was formed. The ministry
was soon reinforced by the accession of John Sutton, Joshua Carman, and John
Mason, the two last from Kentucky. As the Columbia church became speedily the
mother of churches, so the Miami Association became the mother of Associations.
In 1801 a
Baptist church of German extraction removed from Shenandoah County, Va., to the
Scioto River district in Ohio. They settled at Pleasant Run, near Lancaster. In
1809 the church had three ministers, named Stites,
Comer, and Cofman, who could conduct services in both
German and English. At about the same date a company of Baptists from New
England formed a church at Ames. This church united with the Pleasant Run
(1805) in forming the Scioto Association.
The remaining
Associations formed during this period are the Muskingum (1811) and the Mad
River (1812). These resulted from a subdivision of Miami County, whose churches
had become too numerous and widespread conveniently to assemble.
The Baptist
life of Ohio was more heterogeneous than that in most of the other newly opened
territories, and
[p. 340]
considerable
discord was to be expected. The advance movement of the succeeding period was
to meet with less opposition here than in some of the States. This was due in
part, no doubt, to the fact that in the settlement of the country the New
England and Middle States were in the ascendency.
In 1790 Ohio
had 2 Baptist churches and 64 members; in 1812, 60 churches and 2400 members
were reported.

The History of Warren
County Ohio
Part V. Biographical Sketches
Union Township
(Chicago, IL: W. H. Beers Co, 1882; reprint, Mt. Vernon, IN: Windmill
Publications, 1992)
p. 1054
SAMUEL S. FRENCH, farmer, P. O. Lebanon; was born on the
place where he resides, in 1829; he is a son of Samuel French, who was born in New Jersey, in 1788, and
was reared in Pennsylvania; his mother, Nancy
Sibbett, was also born in New Jersey. Mr.
French came to Ohio in 1801, and was only 13 years old at the time; he worked
for some years as a hand at odd jobs; he was married three times; first to Nancy Brandenburg, by whom he had two
children – Anner A. and Eliza; his second wife was Nancy
Sibbett, who bore him two children – Samuel S. and Joseph; by his third wife, Eliza Meeker, he had no children. He
died in 1862, aged 73 years. Mr. French was a
self-made man, as when he came to Ohio he was only a boy in years, and entirely
destitute of means; by unremitting toil and industry,
coupled with good management, he built up a good property, as at his death he
left 226 acres of choice land. Our subject was married in 1853, to Sarah Burrows, who has borne him two
children – Joseph B. and Mary E. He owns the ÒOld HomeÓ farm,
133 acres, which is largely in cultivation and comfortably improved. Mrs. French was born in New Jersey, in
1829; her parents, Samuel and Amelia (Hunt) Burrows, were natives of
New Jersey; they settled in Lebanon in 1831; he was a shoemaker by occupation,
a trade he followed in Lebanon. To them were born four children – Sarah, Mary, Samuel S. and
John M. He died in 1875; she in 1874. Both were members of the M. E. Church, to
which they belonged for forty-five years.
Researach by Mara French. Nancy Brandenburg was b. 1797 and d. 1827 whereupon Samuel remarried in 1828. NancyÕs father was Aaron Brandenburg, b. 18 Feb 1761 in Middletown, Frederick Co., MD, and d. 22 Jul 1825 in Lebanon, Warren Co., OH. He m. Ann Nancy Brandenburg in 1783 in Frederick, MD, and was one of the Miami Valley Ohio Pioneers in 1812 when John French was born. He had moved to Ohio from West Virginia; therefore, even though the dates are almost precise with John FrenchÕs migration to Ohio, John came directly from Ft. Cumberland, Alleghany Co., MD, so the Brandenburg and French family did not travel together. Aaron Brandenburg was buried in 1825 at the Old Methodist Cemetery (aka Pioneer Cemetery) in Lebanon, Warren Co., OH. The French family were Baptists.
[22] Elizabeth French, b. 1814, m. Farris, living in Clay Co., IL in Dec 1882. Then I find out that this is Press Farris, b. 1866 in IL, lived in Larkinsburg, Clay, IL, m. Elizabeth.
But then there is an Elizabeth French who was b. Jun 1812 in OH, and appears living alone in the 1900 census of Center, Marion, IN, age 87, widowed, states her father was born in OH and her mother in PA. She must have had a different maiden name as she was married.
[23] The 1820 census of OH (the census closest to the date when John was born and the first census of Ohio), shows 55 French men living in Ohio. His father would have had to be born about 1785, and no French was living in OH that early, so his father probably was born in the east, perhaps NJ considering the fact that the DNA Test Group 1 is mostly from NJ, and migrated to Ohio. Of these 55 men, 4 were named James. The James in Millersburg, Holmes County, Ohio is of interest because the town was laid out by Adam Johnson and Charles Miller of Coshocton County, OH; the Miller family also had a connection to John French as John was buried in the Miller Cemetery in Indiana. The first two residences in Millersburg, Holmes, OH, on the 194 lots were build by James French and William Painter according to Wikipedia.
More about William Painter: The General Assembly of Ohio fixed Friday, February 18, 1825, as the time for opening the first term of the Court of Common Plea in Holmes County. It had also appointed Peter Casey, William Hutchison and George Luke as Associate Judges of the court. Notice of the time and place of holding the first court had been duly given. Millersburg at that time had about five homes with a population not exceeding fifty. The Associate Judges appeared at the time and selected the tavern, recently built by William Painter, as the place to open the court. The Judges took their seat on a wooden Bench and informally opened court because there were no court officers. Peter Casey acted as President Judge for Alexander Harper, of Zanesville, who was absent.
Because Willliam Painter was an adult in 1825, one would assume that James French was also an adult at that time; therefore, it is entirely possible for him to have had son John French in 1812. After searching online, William Painter was born 1799 in Westmoreland Co., PA and died 6 Mar 1875 in Holmes Co., OH. In 1821 he lived in Wayne OH, and in 1830 he lived in Martinsburg, Holmes, OH, and in 1870 he lived in Prairie, Holmes, OH.
James French was born 1798 in Westmoreland Co., PA, d. 17 May 1856 in Millersburg, Holmes, OH, and was the son of John French (1775-1815) and Jane Hutchison (1778-). BUT, because this James married Susanna Castor on 15 Feb 1818, his first son is John born in 1820 and died in 1884, and obviously this is not line of John French b. 1812. This line was formerly Chart #48, but it has been merged into Chart #5, which does not have the same DNA as Chart #187.

I am looking for information on the French line of my family. I can trace them back to Bedford County, PA. Samuel French (b 1835) married a Catharine (b. 1835). Samuel's father is Stephen (or Steven) French (b. 1800). Stephen was married to a Sarah (b. 1803). In the 1850 census, Stephen and Sarah lived in Bedford County, PA. Any information of when the French family moved to Bedford County would be appreciated. Does anyone have these as part of their ancestry? Thanks.
**
Further information on this: It appears that Stephen French's father is Daniel French and was born before 1775.
**
Daniel French of Providence TWP, Bedford, Bedford Co., PA. He enlisted in the Rev War while living in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, along with a Jeremiah French. Both Daniel and Jeremiah French moved to Bedford County, PA, following the war.

Jeremiah French moved on to an area on the IN-OH border and is being researched by another French researcher. They have just submitted DNA from their line for testing.

Part of my East Jersey line, Joseph P. French 1767-1826 and son Robert 1787-ca 1855 does come through the Bedford Co. area and to Allegany Co., MD. But the names James and Daniel and Stephen do not show up in the correct years. Let's stay in touch.

[32] In 1814 the Bethel congregation was founded by twelve pioneer settlers to Warren County in Ohio. The location of their first meetings was in a maple grove near the site of the present Murdoch Cemetery, where many of the churchÕs early members were laid to rest. In 1839 the congregation was deeded the land for itÕs present location by Mr. Samuel Walker. John Walker was one of the early settlers in Shelby, IN. The Walker family came from Franklin Co., PA, and apparently has no connection with the French family.
Samuel Brice Walker was b. 13 Feb 1779 in Franklin Co., PA, and d. 6 Dec 1845 in Warren, OH. He m. Hannah Spence 25 Dec 1804 in Murdock, Warren, OH. It is helpful to research families who followed the same migration path as John French did. As we can see, Samuel would have been about the same age as JohnÕs father. All SamuelÕs 10 children were born in Murdock, Warren, OH, between 1807-1827, the exact time when John French was born there until the time he moved to Shelby, Indiana, also with the Walker family. Murdock is an unincorporated community in southern Hamilton township, Warren County, Ohio. About 80 members of the Walker family are buried at the Murdock cemetery, but no French or Spurling.
Samuel Brice WalkerÕs father, Samuel Walker, contracted with General Lytle for 1,100 acres of land, to be selected from a tract near Williamsburg in Clermont County, OH, or if these lands on view were not satisfactory, then Walker was to have his choice out of some 3 or 4 other tracts. In the Spring of 1799, Samuel went to see the lands and to consummate the purchase. He met General Lytle at Squire HunterÕs and not being satisfied with the tracts in Clermont County, he, after some hesitation, accepted a deed for 1,100 acres situated in southern Hamilton township, OH, and upon which he settled in 1802. The consideration named in the deed was $2.00 per acre. See complete article: http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/c/a/r/Wanda-S-Carwile/PDFGENE2.pdf.
Further consideration would tell us that JohnÕs father may have lived in Franklin Co., PA in the 1800 census. Only 1 French appears in the 1800 census of Fannett, Franklin, PA: Samuel French with a family of 9:
2 males under 10, b. 1790-1800
1 male 10-15, b. 1785-1790
1 male 26-44, b. 1756-1774, head of household, Samuel French
3 females under 10, b. 1790-1800
1 female 10-15, b. 1785-1790
1 female 26-44, SamuelÕs wife
This same Samuel French was on the Tax List of Fannett, Franklin, PA, in 1798 where he had 1 house valued at $15 and 100 acres valued at $500. He is also on the Fannett Tax and Exoneration list of 1785. He was in the Pennsylvania Revolutionary War as a Private sometime between 1775-1783. He appears in the 1790 census of Fannett, Hamilton, Letterkenney, Montgomery, and Peters, Franklin, Pennsylvania with a family of 4 (Samuel, wife, son, daughter) exactly as shown in the 1800 census. No Samuel French appears in Franklin County, PA, in the 1810 census, but findagrave shows Samuel French, b. 1750, d. 1816 in Amberson, Franklin, PA, indicating he did not go to Ohio. He m. Rebecca (1765-1840), served in the Penn. Militia and Continental Line in Cumberland County Militia, PA, from 1778-1783. He served under Capt. Thomas Askey, Capt. Noah Abraham and Col. Samuel Culberson from 1780-1782, and Capt. John Campbell in 1778. He was a part of the Protective Force. Later he became a landowner and a farmer of 220 acres, 120 farm, 100 mountain. He married Rebecca Woodrow(?) mid 1780 and had 11 children. His son John was born 6 May 1793 in Amberson, Franklin Co., PA, married Sarah Young, and died 27 Dec 1862 in North Henderson, Mercer Co., IL.
Samuel Brice Walker had son John S. Walker (4th child of his 10 children) on 15 Dec 1810. He is about the same age as John French, and they both migrated to Shelby Co., IN. The Warren County, Ohio History Genealogy Lebanon, OH website shows 736 families living early on in this area and includes French. The Walker family resided in Scotland, then Ireland, immigrated to Pennsylvania (never to New Jersey), and then to Ohio. In Ohio, they first lived in Butler County, OH, and then spread to various other counties including Portage and Warren.
ÒAÓ Samuel French died Mar 1867 and is buried at the State Old Insane & Penal Cemetery in Columbus, Franklin Co., OH, likely an asylum grave. Not sure at all if this is the same Samuel French as FFA Chart #187.
[33] Frenches who lived in New Jersey and were early settlers in Ohio:
Hiram French, b. 1810 in NJ, m. Elizabeth Headley who was b. 1812, married in OH.
Friends Burying Grounds, Damascus,
OH, – FFA Chart #20.
Mercy Cox m. Thomas French, both of New Jersey, both born in 1746, Mercy d.
1807. They had 8 children. All remained in New Jersey except Thomas who moved
to Pennsylvania, Hannah who died in Columbiana, OH, Robert who died in Salem,
Columbiana, OH, Barzillai who died in Damascus,
Mahoning, OH, and Elijah who died in Columbiana, OH. Essentially this means
that 4 of their children (the youngest) moved to OH, and all to Columbiana
County. Of these 4 children, possible father of John French b. 1812 could be
Robert b. 1779, Barzillai b. 1781, or Elijah b. 1784.
Robert and Barzillai lived full lives, but Elijah
died in 1815. None of these men had a son named John. I believe these families
were Quakers; whereas, John French was Baptist. See
Ref. [48] for possibly more details.
[34] Mara FrenchÕs notes in August 2014.
Circumstantial evidence shows that John French NO NO NO was a son of Samuel and that David and Daniel are younger brothers of Samuel. Samuel, David, and Daniel are sons of Joseph of Westfield, NJ, which is Chart #188 and these and his other children were left orphans when Joseph died in 1799. John named his 3rd son Samuel. Samuel was born 18 Aug 1788 and married 3 times: Nancy Brandenburg, Nancy Sibbett, and Eliza Meeker. He could have had a wife before these 3 as his first marriage came when he was 32 years old; the 3 marriages below show that he was never even one year without a wife.
Samuel m1. Nancy Ann Brandenburg on 21 Dec 1820 in Warren Co., OH, she was b. 13 Nov 1797 in Hampshire Co., VA, and d. 20 Aug 1827. This date shows that Samuel was in OH by 1820, but was he in OH by 1812 when John French was born?
Samuel m2. Nancy Sibbett on 14 Oct 1828 in Warren Co, OH
Samuel m3. Eliza Meeker on
21 Sep 1856, no children. Eliza Meeker French was born 11 Nov 1809 in NJ and d.
9 Jul 1880 in Warren Co., OH, and is buried at the Deerfield Cemetery in South
Lebanon, Warren Co., OH, Plot B 54 C. The death date conflicts with Warren
County death record date of 8 July 1880. Elizabeth Jane Worley ÒElizaÓ Meeker
French was the daughter of Henry and Sarah ÒJaneÓ Lindsley
Meeker, and was born in Morristown, NJ. She shares a marker with her only son,
Lewis, by a marriage before that with Samuel French. Lewis died in 1864 at the
age of 19, born 1845. Eliza married first Francis A. Worley 16 Apr 1829 in OH
and Samuel French 21 September 1856.
Samuel and Eliza appear in the 1860 census living with her son by a previous marriage, Lewis Worley, age 15.
Several other French members are buried at Deerfield Cemetery: Beatrice French 1901-1907; Joseph B. French 1809-1880; Julia H. French 1857-1927; Samuel S. French 1829-1917; Sarah A. Burrows French 1828-1913 (wife of Samuel S. French); Mary Eliza French Snook 1857-1935. I had hoped to find Samuel here, but he died much earlier than these Frenches. Julia French appears in the 1920 census of Salem, Warren, OH, widowed, age 62, living as a lodger on Railroad Street in Salem, Warren, OH. She appears married to Joseph French who was born Oct 1854 in OH; Julia was b. Apr 1857 in OH, appearing in the 1900 census of Salem, Warren, OH, living with Dora? Adopted daughter or stepdaughter.
Nancy was buried at the Old Methodist Cemetery (aka Pioneer Cemetery), and thereÕs a photo of her gravestone online. She died in Warren, OH.
So, perhaps lets see when Samuel came to Ohio, and was it before 1812? Apparently between NJ and Ohio, he lived in Fort Cumberland, Pennsylvania. Beers History of Warren Co., OH, says Samuel came in 1801 at age 13. One could see that his father died in 1799, and perhaps he was sent to Ohio with another family, maybe the Robinsons. John was born during the War of 1812, so maybe some of the early records were lost.
So Samuel seems the most logical, but we just donÕt have the record. When Samuel married Nancy Brandenburg, he was 32, and that seems somewhat old for getting married for the first time. But, as you can see, he married her at the END of the census year, so where was he on the 1820 census? That was OhioÕs first census. He should be there as he came to Ohio in 1801. But of course in 1820 he was living with someone else as he was not head of household. I could only imagine he was living with David or Daniel.
There were 55 French head of households living in Ohio in 1820. There is an ÒSÓ French in Washington, Warren, OH, with a family of 6:
2 males under 10, b. 1810-1820, John French
1 male 16-25, born 1795-1804, but Samuel was born in 1788
2 females under 10, b. 1810-1820, unknown*
1 female 26-44, born 1776-1794** — must have been SamuelÕs wife, a bit older than he was.
*Females could have been Elizabeth Ann French, b. 18 Apr 1820 in Warren, OH, she m. 18 Oct 1835 in Shelby, IN.
See http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=jsfrench&id=I3713
** Joseph was born 25 Dec 1767 in Westfield, Essex/Union, NJ, and married Hannah-Anna Robertson, b. 25 Feb 1768 in Westfield. She died after 1845, but in Fayette Co., PA, not in Warren, OH. She was also born before the female in the 1820 census. So, the female in the census could have been SamuelÕs first wife.

Ancestry.com transcribed this correctly, plus the head of household is engaged in Agriculture.
So, after finding this 1820 census of S French, ancestry.com matched it up with 5 others using the name ÒSamuelÓ,
but these are all of a Samuel French who lived in Randolph Co., IN, who was b. 1790 and d. 1858.
[35] First Baptist Church of Middletown, http://www.fbcmiddletown.org/AboutUsPages/historypage.html.
Celebrating over 200 years from 1808-2012. Began by Daniel Doty in 1791, a
Baptist farmer from Essex County, NJ, was the earliest to come to scout this
Miami Valley. In
1811, the year before John French was born, these Baptists, tired of meeting in
homes of members, decided to build another house of worship. The site selected
was on the road from Middletown to Franklin, about a mile from their former
place. It was a framed edifice 24X30 feet, built
somewhere, at that time considered as out of Middletown, at what is now the
vicinity of the corner of Enoch Drive and Tytus
Avenue. This house of worship cost $160.00 to build and is considered as our
first Baptist Church building.
[34] James French, State of Ohio, 26 Nov 1822.
[35] I seem to always get these ideas. If the Samuel French is the one in the 1820 census listed as ÒS. FrenchÓ, he has a son born between 1810-1820 which could be John French, and 2 daughters born the same period. Samuel married Nancy Ann Brandenburg French, b. 13 Nov 1797, d. 20 Aug 1827, Pioneer Cemetery, Lebanon, Warren Co., OH, on 21 Dec 1820 in Warren Co., OH, Pioneer Cemetery, Lebanon, Warren Co., OH. Because they were married at the end of 1820, Nancy was not included in that census, plus she was too young to have the 3 children born between 1810-1820; John was born 1812 and she would have been 15 which is a possibility. Because Nancy died in 1827, she is not in any census record that would help us. Samuel had 2 daughters between 1810-1820, and by the 1830 census, these daughters may have been still young enough to live with Samuel and his second wife. John French had moved to Indiana the year before, in 1829. Samuel m2. Nancy Sibbett on 14 Oct 1828 in Warren Co, OH.
There are 2 men named Samuel French in the 1830 census of Ohio:
1.
Samuel
French, Union, Warren, OH, family of 5
Because Samuel had been married to Nancy Sibbett
for only 2 years, the female 5-9 could not be hers.
1 male under 5, Samuel French*,
b. 1829, son from first wife, who also appears in the 1840 census.
1 male 40-49, Samuel, head of household,
born 1781-1790, Samuel was born 1788 in NJ
1 female under 5, Eliza French b. 1827, dau. from first wife, never married, always lived with father.
1 female 5-9, b. 1821-1825, Anner
A., dau. from first
wife who also appears in the 1840 census.
1 female 30-39, SamuelÕs wife Nancy Sibbett, she was
born 1795 in NJ
*This is the son referred to as Samuel S. French who died 1917 and was buried in the Deerfield Cemetery, South Lebanon, Warren Co., OH. Also living with this family in 1850 is John Brandenberg, age 7, who was the a relative of SamuelÕs 1st wife Nancy Brandenberg; he was born 1843. Nancy Sibbitt was born 14 Aug 1790 in Hopewell Twp., Essex Co., NJ, and died 30 Sep 1855 in Warren Co., OH, afterwhich Samuel m3. Eliza Meeker on 21 Sep 1856. Nancy m1. Henry Ritenour and had 2 children William Ritnour b. 1810 and Aaron Ritenour b. 1816, afterwhich she divorced him and married Samuel French on 14 Oct 1828. For more on Samuel S. French, see http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/58336968/person/46036328802.
No sisters of John French who would have been born 1810-1820. These sisters must have moved to Indiana with John in 1829.
2.
Samuel
French, Washington, Warren, OH, family of 7
Apparently this Samuel was born 1790 in NY and moved to Green, Randolph,
IN, and was married to Esther, and he died in 1858. He m. Jane Hollingsworth on
20 Dec 1827. This is not the Samuel from FFA Chart
#187.
1 male under 5
2 males 5-9
1 male 10-14
1 male 40-49, Samuel, head of household, born 1781-1790, Samuel was born 1788
1 female 10-14
1 female 40-49, SamuelÕs wife Jane Hollingsworth
[36] John French moved to Indiana in 1829 and was either head of household or living with his siblings Daniel and David, but that is somewhat unlikely because they were younger than he was. In the 1830 census, he would be listed as age 15-19, b. 1812, with no children as he was not yet married.
[37] A town named Marietta can also be found in Ohio in Washington County, which lists John French living there in 1830; but this is not the same John as the one born in 1812.
Marietta, the county seat of Washington County, OH, was the first permanent settlement of the new United States in the Territory Northwest of the River Ohio. On 7 Apr 1788, 48 men arrived at the confluence of the Muskingum and Ohio Rivers at Marietta; none are listed with the surname. Historical Collections of Ohio by Henry Howe lists these 48 men and also has detailed information with photos.
[38] History of Shelby County, Indiana from the earliest time to the present, 1887, page 304, see http://archive.org/stream/historyofshelbyc00bran/historyofshelbyc00bran_djvu.txt.
A settlement made in Jackson Township and for many years known as the "Haw Patch Settlement" three miles northeast of Edinburg, was one of the earliest made in the county. Many of the settlers of Jackson became active in the public affairs of the county. One of the first to take up his residence in that section was Colonel Hiram Alldredge, who was appointed by the board of commissioners, at their first term in 1822, to the office of County Clerk. This office he filled most faithfully until his death which occurred early in the thirties. Other prominent early settlers were — Judge Joseph Dawson, the Rev. James Clark, Moses Pruitt, Judge Joshua B. Lucas, Zechariah Collins, the P^ev. Alfred Phelps, Ivory H. Leggett, Dr. Benjamin Sanders, John Cutsinger, Jacob Wirtz, David and Jesse Scott, Abner Connor, John and George Warner, Dr. A. J. Treon.
It is probable that there were no squatters in the southeastern portion of the county, but soon after the land was surveyed Alexander Van Pelt came with his family and settled at the mouth of Conn's Creek, in what is now Noble Township. Others who came about the same time were Arthur Major, Isaac Avery, Josiah and Daniel Williams, William Major, Mathias Floyd, John and Anderson Winterrowd, Peter Bailey and Jonathan Paul. The last named was a conspicuous figure in the settlement of both Shelby and Decatur counties.
During the year 1821, settlements were made in almost every part of the county. Indeed, they, were made so rapidly that it is difficult to tell which is entitled to the priorty. Those who were prominent among the early settlers of the various part of the county, not elsewhere mentioned, were: Hugh and Jeremiah Campbell, James Woods, Peter Andrews, Nathan Simpson, John Andrews, Elijah Kirkpatrick, Wilhs and William Law, Peter Heck, Noble Grimes, Robert Kennedy, Thomas Vaughan, Hudson Ray, Edward Toner, John Salla, John Snyder, James Young, Lewis Hendricks, Rev. The next term of the court began on the 16th day of September, 1824, and was still held at the house of Benjamin Williams. The Grand Jury roll at that term, contains a number of names that were among the earliest as well as the most influential of the county. They were: Jacob Crick, John Wallace, Bennett Michael, Jacob Hartez, Jesse Scott, William Morris, Andrew Derickson, Joseph Allen, Ebenezer Cross, John Hendricks, Andrew Gwinn, Solomon George, David Winterrowd, Daniel French, John Foster, John Bone and Justus Farris. John Hendricks was appointed foreman. Henry Gregg produced his commission as Prosecuting Attorney for the Fifth Judicial Circuit of Indiana. Isaac French who married Electa Rathbone on 8 Jun 1808 in Washington Co., OH.
Electa was b. 1789 and d. 1856. She and Isaac had daughter Delilah French, b. 17 Oct 1812 in Washington, OH, d. 3 Aug 1910 in Athens, OH. She lived in Ames, Athens, OH, all of her adult life, had 11 children, and died at age 97. Isaac and Electa lived in the 1840 and 1850 census in Warren, Washington, OH.
William French who married Phoebe Swearingame on 14 Dec 1806 in Washington Co., OH.
Phoebe was b. 1783 in Virginia and lived in Marion, Marion, OH, in the 1860 census, age 70, living with Israel French 43 (b. 1807), and William French 13 (b. 1837).

[44] Line of FFA Chart #188: It must have been difficult for Samuel, Daniel, and David French to survive after their father, Joseph, died so young in 1799 and left his 8 children orphans. His 8 children went various places or remained in Allegany County, MD. Only 2 years later, Samuel, Daniel, and David left for Ohio. In 1801 when the French family arrived in Ohio, Samuel was 13, Daniel was 10, and David was 8. They probably traveled with the Spurling or Robinson family. How John fits into these families is yet unknown, or even if he does.
[45] Robertson and French in Ohio. Although Joseph French died in 1799, and his wife remarried soon after, his wife's brother, David Robertson, migrated to Ohio and Samuel French (son of Joseph?) settled near him.
From pg 691 of the History of Warren county Ohio
"Who first settled where David Farris now lives, I am not informed; he is the son of David Farris, who settled in 1808 in the eastern part of the township, and moved to the present site in 1828, opening a large farm; he is now in his eighty-third year, hale and hearty.
David Robertson settled prior to Farris on the farm now occupied by his son, Ezra Robertson. Henry and Jonathan Sherwood moved to the township in 1833; Samuel French settled in 1820, and built a stone house, in 1832, since owned by Nathan Clark, now by John Van Horn. William Murray, from Maryland, settled on the west side of the Miami in 1815, where Michael Maher now resides; he moved to this township in 1832, where Alexander Harlan now lives. Himself and George Rankins, on the 26th of December, cut and carried the logs, built a house and moved in the next day; he was foreman at the carding-mill while it was in operation at Freeport; shoemaker, farmer and soldier in the war of 1812; two of his sons reside on farms on the hills east of Freeport."

[47] Turtlecreek, Warren County Ohio. P.J. French and Mariah French had daughter born in Turtlecreek, Warren County, Ohio, in early 1800s.
[48] Mercy G. French (widow) was married 4 Nov 1829 to John Haines in Warren County, OH. Her parents were Thomas and Sarah or Gilpin. His parents were Isaac and Deborah Haines. This marriage was noted in the Quaker Marriage Records of Warren County Ohio in the Miami Monthly Meeting. Because of the Quaker notation, Mercy is probably part of FFA Chart #20.
Isaac Haines married Deborah Roberts on 12 Jun 1758 in Camden, NJ, noted in the Haddonfield (New Jersey) Monthly Meeting of Quakers. Isaac was born in 1722 in Evesham, Burlington, NJ. Isaac died 24 Oct 1795 in NJ.
Isaac HainesÕ parents were Abraham Haines and Grace Hollingshead who married on 9 Mar 1718 in Camden, NJ. Abraham was born in 1696 in Evesham, Burlington, NJ, and he died on 1 Feb 1758, shortly before his son Isaac married. AbrahamÕs parents were the emigrants from Northamptonshire, England, the same county in which Thomas FrenchÕs family lived.
Another research shows that Mercy Chapman French was born 11 Nov 1780 in Philadelphia, PA, and married John Haines as a second marriage on 4 Nov 1829 in Wayne County, OH.
John Haines was born 6 May 1777 in Evesham, Burlington County, NJ and died in 1853 in Springboro, Warren County, OH. He was a Quaker. John Haines family goes back to Richard Haines who was born in Northamptonshire, England, as well as the French family of FFA Chart #20 goes back to Northamptonshire, England. It would appear as though MercyÕs maiden name was Chapman and that she had married a French as her first marriage and a Haines as her second marriage after French died.
Another search shows Mercy Gray Chapman marrying Charles C. French on 24 Oct 1809 in Philadelphia, PA. They were Quakers. The ÒG.Ó after her name probably stood for Gray.
The 1820 census of Warren Co., OH.
C C French
of Wayne, Warren, OH (Charles Creighton). He was b. 20 Sep 1784 in
Philadelphia, PA, and d. in 1824 in Waynesville, Wayne Township, Warren Co.,
OH.
2 males under 10 (James 1812, Charles 1814)
1 male 26-44, C C French, born 1776-1794
1 female 16-25, b. 1795-1804
1 female 45+*
Charles Creighton French had a brother named James French, b. May 1787. Their
parents were Charles French and Rebecca Taylor, FFA Chart #20.
*The wife of C C French was most likely Mercy Gray Chapman, born 1780, and in
the 1820 census she would have been 40, although here it states 45+. Looking at
the original record and not the record of the ancestry.com index, it states:
CC French 2 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 1 0 1 0 1 which they have correctly indexed. Charles
was engaged in farming.
Son James S. French was James Stratton French who returned to Philadelphia after moving to Ohio as a lad. See p. 357 of the book below.
From ÒGenealogy of the Descendants of Thomas FrenchÓ, a well-documented book which I have at here at home, shows p. 152-156 regarding Charles Creighton French. Even though he had a son James born in 1812, this son returned to Philadelphia after living a few years as a lad in Ohio.
[49] DNA Tests
Another source would be to look for the men in DNA Group 1 who left New Jersey and moved to Ohio, because we donÕt know JohnÕs fatherÕs Christian name.
á Most of the Frenches in FFA Chart #188 who migrated to Ohio, went to Washington Co., but all were after 1850.
á Daniel French lived in Lebanon, Warren Co., OH. Two men named French lived in Warren Co. itself between 1790-1890 per the Ohio Census. They were Samuel French of Union township in the year 1860, and Uriah French of Waynesville, in 1860. Samuel French also appears in the 1850 census of Union, Warren Co., OH, with estimated birth date of 1787 in NJ. However, this Samuel had children Nancy (b. 1833 in NJ), Eliza (b. 1827 in OH), and Samuel (b. 1829 in OH). Samuel could have been an uncle of John, or he could have had an earlier marriage and John could have been his son. SamuelÕs line is FFA Chart #188.
á There is a Samuel French who was b. 18 Aug 1788 in Westfield, Essex/Union Co., NJ who d. 1862 in Warren Co., OH which fits in nicely, plus John named one of his sons Samuel. Looking at this SamuelÕs fatherÕs name, we find Joseph P. French, also a name that John named one of his sons. However, this Samuel did not have a son John that we know of unless he had an earlier marriage. This data pertains to FFA Chart #188. The DNA for this line matches the DNA for Chart #188.
á
FFA Chart
#188 moved to Lebanon, Warren Co., OH in 1798 from Westfield, Essex/Union
Co., NJ, then to Decatur Co., IN in 1828, and to Shelby Co., IN in 1834. Both FFA Chart
#188 and #187 are from DNA Gp 1. Checking the 1800 census of Lebanon,
Warren Co., OH, I find Jedediah French b. 1823 which is too late for this
family; however, he married in Shelby IN in 1843, so there could be a connection.
His parents were Daniel French and Amy Tingle, the son of Joseph P. French and
Anna Robertson. Joseph was b. 1767 in Westfield, NJ. He was the son of Robert
C. French and Joanna Osborn. Robert C. French was b. 1724 in Springfield, Essex
Co., NJ. See Ref. [5] below.
Perhaps Daniel French has a brother who has a son named John. Daniel was b. 9
Aug 1791 at Westfield, Essex Co., NJ, d. 9 Apr 1843 at Shelby Co., IN, and m.
25 Feb 1819 at Lebanon, Warren Co., OH, which would put in the same cities at
the same times as JohnÕs father.
á FFA Chart #21 of DNA Gp 1 moved from NJ to OH. No John b. 1812.
á FFA Chart #112 of DNA Gp 1 moved from NJ to OH precisely when John was born there. Moses French was b. 1809 in Walpack, Sussex Co., NJ and his next-in-line sibling Anna was born 1812 in OH. No John b. 1812.
á FFA Chart #22 of DNA Gp 1 did not go to Ohio. No John b. 1812.
á FFA Chart #184 of DNA Gp 1 does not show a John born in 1812.
á FFA Chart #16 of DNA Gp 1 does not go to Ohio.
á FFA Chart #28 of DNA Gp 1 does not go to Ohio.
á FFA Chart #36 of DNA Gp 1 goes to Ohio later on than 1812.
á FFA Chart #41 of DNA Gp 1. No John b. 1812.
á FFA Chart #36 of DNA Gp 1. No John b. 1812.
á FFA Chart #19 of DNA Gp 1. No John b. 1812.
Because John FrenchÕs first wife was also born in Warren Co., OH, the family may be from that area; far more research needs to be done.
[50] Research Strategies
á The 1840 census of Jackson and Black Hawk, Shelby Co., IN, age 20-29, born 1811-1820.
á The 1850 census of Jackson, Shelby Co., IN, shows John age 36, which would mean he was born in 1814.
á The 1860 census of Hendricks, Shelby Co., IN, shows John age 48, which would mean he was born in 1812.
á JohnÕs gravestone appears as age 52 years, 1864-52 = 1812
á Best to search for those French members who lived in Hendricks, Shelby, IN, at the same time John lived there, between 1834-1864, in the 1830, 1840, 1850, and 1860 censuses, and born before 1820. Only JohnÕs family is listed in Hendricks in the 1850 and 1860 census. In Shelby County, IN (not in Hendricks), in Liberty, Shelby County, IN, is Amy T. French, born in 1798 in OH, in the 1860 census, married on 30 Nov 1848 to Henry S. Misener. In the 1840 census is Daniel French and no male age 28 as John was, appears. Daniel appears in the 1830 census in Liberty, but no male age 18 as John was, appears. In the 1820 census, Daniel appears in Lebanon, Warren County, OH, only with his wife and with his daughter, aged under 10, and John would have been living with him had he been his son.
á Because his 3rd child was named James, and there are no men named James in his first wifeÕs family, JohnÕs father could have been James. Also, JohnÕs first son named his first son James.
ÒAÓ James French was born ca. 1783 in OH and lived
in Johnson, Trumbull, OH, in the 1850 census. He had a son, Robert, born in
1816 in PA. FFA Chart #19
ÒAÓ James Burgess French was born 9 Jul 1789 in Loudoun Co., VA, and married 21 Aug 1817 in Loudoun, VA, and moved to Brush Creek, Muskingum, OH; this is FFA Chart #36. This family arrived in OH after John French arrived.
ÒAÓ James French was born ca. 1800 in OH and lived in Butler, Montgomery, OH, and married Sarah, and JamesÕ parents were from North Carolina. This James is obviously too young to have had a son born in 1812.
ÒAÓ James French was born ca. 1799 in PA, and lived in Hardy, Holmes, OH in the 1850 census. This James died 17 May 1856 in OH; however, their oldest child was Jane French, b. 1822 in OH, born 10 years after John was born in 1812.
á It could be that JohnÕs father married between 1802-1812 perhaps in OH, and perhaps his fatherÕs name was James. His father may have been in the 1820 census of Ohio, b. ca. 1765-1794.
ÒAÓ James French m. Rachel Mentzer on 28 Nov 1806 in Livingston, KY.
ÒAÓ James French m. Rachel Applegate on 9 Jun 1810 in Mason, KY. Never lived in OH, from FFA Chart #36.
á Best to find out where John was born in OH in 1812. Perhaps the War of 1812 would be a clue to find his father who may have died during the war. www.fold3.com shows 19 matches for ÒaÓ French living in Ohio between 1800-1813 and engaged in the War of 1812. Of these 19 matches, only 11 are applicable to this line. Captain French was the officer in charge of a military unit where several of these men and others had enlisted.

Mariah French, b. 1812, d. 1813, Friends Burying Grounds, Damascus, Colombiana County, OH. Mariah was a Quaker, whereas John was a Baptist.
Silas French, died 29 May 1812 at Wakeman Township Cemetery, Wakeman, Huron County, OH. Many Frenches are buried at this cemetery. It appears as though the gravestone says he was aged 69, but it is very unclear. That would mean he was born in 1743. It appears as though Silas was born in Keene, NH.

á Perhaps JohnÕs mother was still alive in the 1850 census. She may have been born between 1772-1797. His father may have been born ca. 1765-1794 and died young. His parents may have met in OH, but were born elsewhere.
Eliza French is in the 1880 census of Union, Warren, OH, age 71, born ca. 1809 in NJ. She may have been the wife of an ancestor of John French, b. 1812. In 1880 she was widowed and states that both her parents were born in New Jersey. Eliza was living with perhaps her father-in-law Samuel French who was 20 years old than her, in the 1860 census. In the 1850 census, she was married to Albert French, b. 1808 in NJ. Their oldest child was Cornelius who was born in 1839 in NJ.

Mercy G. French was married 4 Nov 1829 in Warren, OH, the daughter of Thomas French and Sarah Gilton. She m. John Haines whose parents were Isaac and Deborah Haines. They were Quakers and probably connected to FFA Chart #20. See Ref. [48] for details.
ROBERT C. FRENCH was born 1724, and died March 15, 1813 in Essex, now Union County, New Jersey. He married (1) MARY WILLIS. He married (2) JOANNAH OSBORN December 01, 1761, daughter of HENRY OSBORN and MARGARET. She was born Abt. 1735. Because Robert died in 1813, perhaps John was his last child born in 1812.
Children of ROBERT FRENCH and MARY WILLIS are:
i. WILLIS FRENCH, b. 1745
ii. DAVID A. FRENCH, b. 1747
iii. NAOMI FRENCH, b. 1749

[51] Robinson Family
Joseph French died in 1799, and his wife, Anna Robinson, remarried soon after. Anna RobinsonÕs brother, David Robertson, migrated to Ohio with the 3 French brothers (Samuel, Daniel, David) and they all settled in the same area in Warren County, OH. Joseph FrenchÕs children were Robert, Samuel, Phoebe, Daniel, David, Elizabeth, Mary, Joseph, and Anna – only 3 of these children migrated to Ohio.
James Robinson m. Molly Johnston on 25 Aug 1807 in Washington Co., OH.
The Robertson family is also closely connected to the French family even back in Elizabeth, Union, NJ and in Westfield, Essex, NJ. The Robertson family was buried at the Tindall Cemetery in Liberty Township, Shelby Co., IN.
Marietta, Shelby County, IN, was laid out by John Heistand, David Engles, John French, Sylvanius Robinson, and Redding Money on 31 Aug 1835 from the History of Jackson, Shelby County, Indiana. David Engles was appointed the U.S. Postmaster of Marietta, Shelby, IN, on 22 Aug 1855. Prior to him on 27 Jun 1853, Sylvanus Robertson held the position. Redding Money was b. 7 Jan 1805 in Greensburgh, Green Co., KY, and m. in Kentucky before moving to Shelby, IN; he died in Marietta just about the same year that John French did, on 25 Aug 1864.
[52] Study of Early Generations
John French, b. 1812, cannot be found within this family, but coincidental evidence might prove some day that he belonged to this family. Most of those families in DNA Test Group 1 did not go to Ohio, but Chart #188 did. 5 generations have been added to the ancestry of John French that connect to FFA Chart #188.
Generation E
E.1 John French, brickmason, b. before 1648, was of Woodbridge, NJ and Staten Island, NY, d. 20 Mar 1713 in Woodbridge, Middlesex Co., NJ, m. Susannah ca. 1687 and had 3 children: John, Richard, Ann. For details, see http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=jsfrench&id=I0950.

For details, see http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=jsfrench&id=I3713. Children were Robert J., Samuel, Phebe, Daniel, David, Mary, Joseph, Anna. Joseph m. Hannah-Anna Robertson, b. 25 Feb 1768 in Westfield, Essex/Union, NJ.
Generation A
Children of Joseph P. French, B.1
Samuel, Daniel, and David all migrated to Ohio as youngers in 1801, ages 13, 10, and 8, respectively. Researching these 3 men would help find the father of John French, b. 1812. In the year 1812, these 3 men were ages 24, 21, and 19; any one of them could have been the father of John French. Because their father Joseph was in Westfield in the 1790 census (the time between SamuelÕs and DanielÕs births, Joseph must have been in the 1790 census showing these 2 small children, but he cannot be found anywhere.
A.1 Samuel French, b. 18 Aug 1788 in Westfield, Essex/Union, NJ, d. 1862 in Warren Co., OH. For details, see http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=jsfrench&id=I3719.

Chronology for Daniel French
1791 Aug 9 – Daniel born in Westfield, Essex/Union, NJ.
1801 – Daniel moved to Lebanon, Warren, OH, when he was 10 years old.
One account is written by Daniel's son J. R. French - Joseph Robertson French. He says Daniel was born 9 Aug 1791 in NJ and when 2 years old his parents moved to PA (where his brother David was born). Then they came to Lebanon, Warren, OH, when he was 10 years old in 1801.
The other account was in a newspaper in 1929, but had been written before 1916. It tells about the brick tavern and also about the brick house that Daniel built which became a famous house of entertainment. Governor Noble stayed there at one time.
From Janet French Crisp: I have a copy of an article compiled by J. R. French (Joseph Robertson French) about his father Daniel and it plainly states that Daniel came to Shelby, IN, in 1820. I have some short copies of other articles that people sent me that state the same thing. The brick tavern/hotel that Daniel built was quite the building for that time from peopleÕs comments. In the East gable Daniel fashioned bricks that spelled out 1827 that were two feet high. This was the year he built the tavern.
David Robertson was born in 1745 in Elizabeth, Union, NJ and died 1827 in Warren, OH. The year before his death and for many years before that, he was living in Shelby Co., IN.
1819 Feb 25 – Daniel m. Amy Tingle on 25 Feb 1819 in Lebanon, Warren, OH.
1820 -- Daniel began his move to Shelby Co., IN, with his wife and father-in-law Tingle, but his family did not move permanently there until his house was built in 1827.
David had a son born between 1815-1820.
David and John both moved to Shelby, IN. David French moved to Shelby Co., IN, in 1821, and John didnÕt move there until 1829. This would indicate that David was not his father or John would have moved with him in 1821.
1820 Apr 18 – daughter Elizabeth Ann French, b. 18 Apr 1820 in Lebanon, Warren, OH.
1823 Apr 23 – son Jedidah Tingle French, b. 23 Apr 1823 in Lebanon, Warren, OH.
1823 July –Daniel went back and forth building a cabin and tilling land and in the fall of 1822 he moved with his wife and 2-year old daughter to Shelby permanently.
1825 Aug 27 – son Joseph Robertson French, b. 27 Aug 1825 in Lebanon, Warren, OH.
1827 – Daniel built his famous hotel/tavern in 1827 and it was a wonder at that time that people would go out of their way to see. Built out of logs to begin with and then out of brick with the number 1827 in two foot high letters in the gable of one end of the structure.
1828 Mar 17 – son William Verden French, b. 17 Mar 1828 in Decatur Co., IN.
1829 Jun 19 -- Daniel French is listed on p. 269 in Middletown where he platted land on 19 Jun 1829, in Liberty township. The earliest settlers of Middletown had the surnames Moses, Haymond, French, and Eubanks.
1830 census -- Daniel lived in Liberty, Shelby, IN. DanielÕs parents were Joseph P. French (born 25 Dec 1767 in Essex, now Union County, NJ and died in 1799) and Anna Robertson (1768-1845). Daniel French is listed in Liberty, Shelby, IN, as the only French in Shelby County.
1831 May 2 – son James Freeman French, b. 2 May 1831 in Shelby Co., IN.
1834 Oct 20 – daughter Carolina Asenath French, b. 20 Oct 1834 in IN.
1840
Sep 26 -- Julia Ann French,
b. 26 Sep 1840 in Shelby Co., IN.
1843 Apr 9 – Daniel died in Liberty Township, Shelby Co., IN, of black tongue disease (pellagra), and was buried at the Star Church Cemetery east of St. Paul, IN. In Shelby Co., IN, Daniel was buried at the Star Church Cemetery. He was b. 1781 in Westfield, Essex/Union Co., NJ, and his children were all born between 1820 and 1840. We need a child born in 1812, which would be the same generation, but a different sibling. Daniel French was b. 9 Aug 1791 perhaps in Essex Co., now Union Co., NJ, d. 9 Apr 1843 in Shelby Co., IN. His father was Joseph French and his mother was Anna Robertson. He m. 25 Feb 1819 in Warren Co., OH to Amy Tingle who was b. 10 May 1798, d. 17 Nov 1871, and is buried at the Star Church Cemetery.
1844 Aug 12 – Aaron Van Pelt was appointed guardian of DanielÕs minor children. http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/1869128/person/1246536158/photox/2c5604bc-f20c-4e1c-9c13-26b0084ca943?src=search. The heirs of Daniel French listed in partition of his estate:
Amy his widow,
Elizabeth Ann wife of Benjamin Crisler French,
Jedidiah T. French,
Joseph R. French,
William V. French,
James F. French, and
Julia Ann French,
dated Aug 1844. Daniel was born 1791, died 1843. Amy T. Tingle born 1798 died
1871. Jedediah Tingle French born 1823, died 1903.
Joseph Robertson French born 1825, died 1918. William Verden
French born 1828. James Freeman French born 1831, died 1901. Elizabeth Ann
French born 1820, died 1899. Julia Ann French born 1840, died 1897. The
youngest, Elizabeth Ann, was originally thought to have been a daughter of
Samuel because he had 2 daughters born between 1810-1820. Study http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/1869128/person/160129648.

[53] JohnÕs Possible Connection to Dorris French. Dorris is FFA Chart #164, Dorris French, b. 1792.
John French, b. 1812 in OH, could be related to Dorris French, b. 10 Jul 1792 in NJ (migrated to KY), d. 28 Aug 1855 in Lynn, Posey, IN, m. 17 Mar 1818 to Sarah Thomas in IN:
á 1812 -- Dorris French is listed in the War of 1812 when he was 20 years old, a Private with the 4th Regiment Mounted Indiana Militia. His father may have been Zadock French, b. 1760, d. 1830, and his mother was Patsey French, b. 1763, d. 1852.
á 1818 Mar 17 – Dorris French m. Sarah Thomas in Lynn, Posey, Indiana. The marriage record shows that Dorris was born in NJ in 1792 and not in KY, which is probably more reliable than the 1850 census which states he was born in KY, stated only 5 years before he died.

The 1850 census of Lynn, Posey, IN,
states that Dorris was born in KY. At this time he was 57 years old and died 5

IN MEMORIAM - Sarah French, of Lynn township, this County, died at the residence of her son Ralph, Tuesday Sept. 7th at six o'clock a.m.; aged 83 years, 10 months and 29 days.
"Aunt Sallie," as she was familiarly known, was sone of the "pioneer mothers" ofher adopted County and State. She was born near the site of the city of Knoxville, State of Tennessee, October 9th, 1801.
To trace the genealogy of this aged lady would require far more space than I now have at command. Her maiden name was Thomas. She was one of a family of eight children, all of whom were residents of Posey County, and of whom only two are now living, these being Capt. Geo. W. Thomas, of this city, and Jas. H. of Lynn Township.
Some time in the latter part of the 18th century her father, James Thomas, moved from North Carolina to Middle Tennessee. He there met and married Mary Eblin, who had recently emigrated from the State of Virginia. Seventy-three years ago James Thomas, with his wife and three or four children, left Tennessee and started North. They stopped for a year in Kentucky, and in that year Capt. Thomas, who is now 72 years of age, was born. With this addition to the family James Thomas pushed on north and in the latter part of 1813 crossed the Ohio River into what is now Posey County.
In 1816, the year Indiana became a state, near the Beech Grove Church and within a half mile of, where she died, Sarah Thomas became Sarah French marrying Darris French, who had moved here from Kentucky some years before and settled in the western part of what is now Black Township.
There the young couple went to live but soon after they moved into the Beech hills of Lynn township, chopped off a building spot in the then wild and almost unbroken forests and erected their primitive log cabin. That spot became what today is known far and near as the "Old French Homestead." The log cabin soon developed into a comfortable home and here in a humble way this pioneer couple lived happily until 1855, when the husband suddenly sickened and died. Down in the "old apple orchard" just back of the house they buried him, and Sarah French was left a widow. But she did not give up the home. For more than a quarter of a century after her husband's death she maintained her household and made it one busy scene of industry and hospitality. At last, overcome with age and infirmity, she was prevailed upon to sell her homestead, which she did in 1880, and went to live with her children, Zadok, James, Samuel, Mariah, Clark, Ralph, Thomas, Mary and John. John died in infancy and Zadok died last November, aged 66. All the others are living. She had many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
But today she sleeps-and all these are left to mourn her loss-not untimely, for she had lived far beyond the average of human live. She had lived to see a wilderness converted into a veritable garden spot, full of happy homes. She had lived to see all her children but one past the meridian of live, prosperous and full of love and respect for her. She knew that she must die. She said her life's work was done, and that she longed to be laid at rest in the little familly burying ground, where her husband had slumbered for forty years. She sickened and died-or rather ceased to exist for thos who watched her in her last hours and she showed no visible sign of suffering, but seemed to fall asleep.
On the morning of the 9th last, she was buried, in the presence of a large number of relatives and friends, the funeral discourse being delivered at the grave by Rev. Ashbury, of this city.
Thus ended the life of one who for more than 70 years had been a resident of Posey County, and the number of "first settlers" is one less. There are few of them left. One by one they are passing away. Very soon they will all be gone, leaving tradition alone to tell of their humble origin and the story of their early struggles and triumphs.
May we cherish their memories and emulate their
virtues.

In the 1880 census of Lynn, Posey, IN, Lardner C. French was 50 and married to Elizabeth 47. They had children James W. 28, Katie 22, Maria 20, Nellie 16, Walter 14, Sallie 12, Alexander 10, Fannie 8, Rufus 6, and Lewis C. 1. Lardner states that his father was born in NC and his mother in TN. All these children minus the ones under 10 were in the 1870 census of Lynn, Posey, IN in the Black Hawk Mills post office district. Same location in the 1860 census and in the 1850 census where Dorris is LardnerÕs father and Sarah is his mother, and Patsey French is his grandmother.
The original members of the family in Black township were William and Hugh. Other families who settled in the township before the battle of Tippecanoe were the Rowes, Dunns, Jeffries and the Andrews, Nestlers, Ashworths, Frenches, Bacons, Kennedys, the Burlisons, Joseph Holleman, Thomas Russell and George Harshman, who located in what is known as Prairie Settlement. Most of the foregoing names are familiar in Black township and in Posey county today. Nathan and Moses, who represented the Ashworth family, brought two slaves with them. Moses was a Methodist preacher. There were four of the Bacons — Aaron, Edmond, Samuel and Joseph. The two latter brought two slaves with them, but as they could not hold them they were taken south and sold. Aaron Bacon was one of the early sheriffs of Posey county and served from 1820 to 1824. Sylvester French arrived in 1818 at Mt. Vernon. Julia Greathouse, born 17 Jan 1835, married Thomas French, a prominent farmer of Lynn township, and is at the age of 78, enjoying the sunset years of life, surrounded by her grandchildren; see Raymond French in ÒHistory of Posey County, IndianaÓ.
Raymond A. French — In the development of the agricultural re-
sources of Posey county, which has placed her in the front rank among
her sister counties of the State, it is probable no one family has been
more numerously represented or has been of more material value in this
development than that of which our subject is a worthy representative.
The French family dates its founding in the county from the settlement
of Dorris French, who entered on land in what is now Lynn township in
1807. He was a native of Kentucky, born July 10, 1792. He married
on March 17, 1818, Sarah Thomas, born October 9, 1801, who came to
Posey county with her parents in 1814. Doris French was not only one
of the first to settle in the county but was one of the most influential
men among the pioneers, the leader of his section, and amassed, for his
time, a comfortable fortune. His death occurred on August 28, 1855,
and that of his wife on September 8, 1885. They were the parents of the
following children: Zedoc, born September 19, 1819; James Thomas,
born January 7, 1822; Samuel, born March 10, 1825: Maria, born October
4, 1827; Lardner Clark, born February 28. 1830; Ralph, born December
26, 1832; Thomas, born March 10, 1835. the grandfather of our subject,
and Mary, born December 10, 1837. Thomas French -attended the coun-
try schools of his neighborhood, assisted his father in the clearing of his
forest covered land, farmed and incidentally underwent the hardships
common to the lot of the early settlers. In 1855. when but twenty years
of age, he married Angelina Calkins, who lived but thirteen months
after her marriage. On March 15, 1857, he married Julia A. Greathouse,
a daughter of George W. and Martha (Harshman) Greathouse (see
sketch of F. M. Greathouse). In 1855 Mr. French purchased the farm
now operated by his grandson. As a man among men, bearing his due
share in connection with the practical activities and responsibilities of a
work-a-day world, he was successful, but, over and above all, he gained
a deep knowledge of the wellsprings from which emerge the stream of
human motive and action. He was a man of high ideals, broad mind,
and took an active interest in the questions of his time. He was a Re-
publican in his political views, and though active in the interests of his
party, was not inclined toward political office. His charities were man^^
Measures having for their object the welfare of the community received
his active support. He loved the fields and flowers. He was a home
builder. He believed in the sacredness of the hearth. He passed to his
reward on March ii, 1910. To do justice to his memory within the limits
of an article of this nature would be impossible, but in even touching the
more salient points there may come objective lesson and incentive and
thus a tribute of appreciation. His widow, aged seventy-eight, survives
him and resides on the old homestead to which she came as a bride in
1857. They were the parents of one child, a son, Gustave French, born
February 11, 1858. Gustave French acquired his education in the schools
of Posey county. He was taught farming by his father, assisted in the
carrying on of his farm properties and resided with him until his death,
which occurred on June 6, 1891. While shooting squirrels among the
trees in front of the farm residence his gun exploded, causing injuries
from which he died. He married on February 23, 1882, Victoria Al-
bright, a daughter of John T. and Mary (Jones) Albright, of Lynn town-
ship. They were the parents of two children : Raymond A., the subject
of this sketch, and Gladys, born August 26, 1885. The widow and
daughter are residents of Mt. Vernon. Raymond A. French was born on
the family farm in Lynn township on April 5, 1883. After completing a
course in the public schools of Posey county, he attended Columbia Col-
lege, Evansville. In 1901 he sought employment in the West. Some two
years were spent with cattle outfits in Wyoming and Utah, one year with
a railroad constructing company. In 1904 he reached Seattle and se-
cured the position of mail clerk on a steamer plying between that city and
Victoria, B. C. In 1905 he resigned this position to accept that of freight
clerk on a steamer plying between Seattle and Skagway, Alaska, and re-
mained in this employment until 1908, when he returned to Posey county
and took the management of the family farm properties. A student and
close observer, his travels in the West and Northwest gave him opportu-
nity for investigating at close range the scientific methods of farming in
use there. He has applied the knowledge gained to the operation of his
properties with satisfactory results. The French farms are well stocked,
the improvements are modern and that order which only comes from
system prevails in the conduct of carrying on. Mr. French married on
January 15, 1907, Miss Katherine Gallick, a daughter of John Gallick, a
native of Austria, who is a resident of Ossining, N. Y. She was born at
Miva, province of Nitra, Austria-Hungary, on November 24, 1886. Mr.
and Mrs. French are the parents of three children : Allen Raymond,
born March 8, 1908; Doris Gustave, born September 9, 1909, and Ruth
Anna, born March 9, 1913. The family attend the Episcopal church.
Mr. French is one of the pushing, progressive men of the county, ener-
getic and unassuming. He is in all respects a high type of the virile
American and a worthy descendant of his pioneer ancestors. He is a
member of New Harmony Lodge. Ancient Free and Accepted Masons.
