John Cravens French emigrated to America ca. 1795 as a stowaway on a ship from his native Galway, Ireland. He lived in Poor Valley (later named Freestone), Tazewell Co., VA, and Smyth Co., VA. John was b. ca. 1775 in Galway (or Gallehan which I cannot find on the internet), Ireland, d. before 1830, m. Elizabeth Goodyhew. She was b. 1770 in either Poor Valley, Tazewell Co., VA or in Maryland, d. 23 May 1859 in Poor Valley, Tazewell Co., VA. John was from Tannersville, Tazewell Co., VA, which was in Washington Co., Virginia, and possibly in Russell Co. at one time [8].
Ref [11] states Òthere is NO verifiable evidence that Elizabeth Goodyhew was the mother of Matthew French or any other French.Ó ElizabethÕs parents are listed as Stephen and Eve French from death records [23]. Perhaps she had a previous marriage to a ÒGoodyhewÓ because she was b. in 1770 and didnÕt marry John Craven French until about 1800 (age 30). The name Goodyhew does not appear in the 1870 Federal Census for Washington Co., VA. This situation needs more research.
There was a Cravens family (Joseph and Robert Cravens) in Tazewell County ca. 1775. The Cravens family must have had a part in this French familyÕs life in order to give John French the middle name Cravens. Perhaps John Cravens FrenchÕs motherÕs name was Cravens – no evidence. The name Cravens in Galway was known as OÕCravane [26]. We are uncertain if the surname is Craven or Cravens.
This chart does not connect with FFA Chart #12 and verified by Virginia Wermuth who has written on book on Chart #12. There were two John French men and two Matthew French men in each line with completely different dates. FFA Chart #12 members arrived much earlier, ca. 1737.
There are no surname French, Cravens, Floyd, Call, Buchanan nor Goodyhew listed in the 1820 Tazewell Co., VA census.
1.1* John Cravens French, b. ca. 1775 in Gallehan (unknown area), Galway, Ireland, d. before 1830, m. Elizabeth (perhaps Goodyhew). She was b. 1770 in either Poor Valley, Tazewell Co., VA or in Maryland [23]. She d. 23 May 1859 [23] in Poor Valley, Tazewell Co., VA [1] at age 89 [23]. On 14 Jan 1824, James is listed as owning 150 acres in Tazewell Co. on the Red Oak Ridge on a branch of the Brushy Fork of Bluestone Grants No. 73, p. 37 [22].
Children of John C. and Elizabeth (Goodyhew) French, 1.1
Of these 5 children, John Cravens French Jr. is the only one who carries the French bloodline.
2.1 Matthew French, b. 1800, d. 23 Dec 1859 in Poor Valley, Tazewell Co., VA [1] [21] [23]. Matthew was a wagonwright, blacksmith, woodcutter and farmer [12]. He had only one male family member to support, Albert Pendleton French, who was the oldest son of MatthewÕs sister Julia [11]. Matthew acquired land through several grants and bought some land. On 30 Aug 1842, he is listed as owning 120 acres on the Poor Valley on the lower fork of Holstein River joining a tract of 220 acres of Thomas Tak or Tate, Grants No. 93, p. 234 [22]. On 1 Nov 1851 he is lised as owning 110 acres in Tazewell County north of his old land and Tates on the south side of the Flat top Mountain and Poor Valley waters, Grants No. 106, p. 429 [22]. Albert developed what Matthew accumulated and expanded it a little more as time went by. There is evidence that there was interaction with the Prestons, Buchanans, Floyds and other families in the area. An interesting circumstance arose with Samuel Larkin (Taylor's) (Julia's daughter's husband) entry into the Army under Gen Floyd. He entered as a common soldier and rose very rapidly promoted to the rank of Colonel [12]. No marriage, no heirs for Matthew. Matthew is listed in the 1850 Tazewell Co., VA census as 50 years of age, born in Virginia [14].
2.2* Joseph French, b. ca. 1807 in VA, m. 17 Dec 1846 in Greene Co., IN to Elizabeth Foley. She was b. ca. 1825 in IN. According to the census, he was a farmer [7].
2.3 Elizabeth French, b. 1810 [23], m. Elijah Call. They had children: Martha Call who m. Malachi C., Caudill Call, and Amanda Call [1]. Elizabeth d. ca 1880 [12]. In 1850 at 40 years of age, she is listed as head of household in the Tazewell Co., VA census [23] [14].
2.4* John Cravens French, Jr., b. 1811 in Giles or Smyth Co., VA, m. Mary (Polly) Prater, b. 1806 in VA, d. 13 Oct 1884 in Thessalia, Giles Co., VA [1]. The 1850 Census of Smyth Co., VA, lists John as 39 years old and a farmer, born in VA. This Census also lists his wife Mary as 44 years old, also born in VA [25].
2.5* Julia Ann French, b. 1815 in MD, d. 9 May 1857 (age 42) in Poor Valley, Tazewell Co., VA. Julia had six children with the French surname from a death certificate showing info given by brother Matthew French in 1849, Tannersville, Tazewell Co., VA [3]. Another record says Julia was a niece to Matthew, DAR, at Giles Co., VA [3]. Julia Ann is listed in the 1850 Tazewell Co., VA census as 35 years of age, born in Maryland [14].
The family legends are that Julia had children by several different men. One named Call, one named Floyd, possibly a Crabtree (most of this family was buried at the Crabtree Cemetery), and finally by William Allison whom she married [1]. Julia m. William Allison on 2 Jan 1851 in Tazewell Co., VA and they had 3 children. See Report below. She had relatives in Saltville, Smyth Co., VA, a town that supplied a large portion of the U.S. with table salt.
Only thru DNA can the issue of the fathers of JuliaÕs children be solved. For example, you'd need to research the different men who could have been Albert's father, such as Call, Floyd, or Crabtree, -- then you'd need a male descendant for Albert to test his DNA. Mara did a bit of research on Floyd to check the times when he and Julia lived in the same area so she could rule out various children. You need to check Washington Co., VA around the 1835-1850 timeframe.

The family legend is that Julia Ann French (2.5 above) had children by several different men. Perhaps one named Call, one named Floyd, possibly a Crabtree (James B. Crabtree), and finally by William Allison whom she married [1]. The following information is not verified by any means.
John Buchanan Floyd was b. 1 Jun 1806 in Blacksburg, Montgomery Co., VA, at the Preston home, d. 26 Aug 1863 in Abingdon, Washington Co., VA [1]. Julia Ann French (number 2.5 above) had 9 children between 1836-1850 with the French surname from a death certificate showing info given by brother Matthew French in 1849, Tannersville, Tazewell Co., VA [3]. Another record says Julia was a niece to Matthew French, DAR, at Giles Co., VA [3]. There is documentation that in 1830, John B. Floyd m. Sally or Sarah Buchanan. No children are mentioned. Another record shows that John B. FloydÕs father, John Floyd, m. Letitia Preston in 1779 and that their son, John B. Floyd, b. in 1806, m. Sarah Buchanan Preston, daughter of Francis Preston and Sarah Buchanan Campbell, on 1 Jun 1830 in Washington Co., VA. No children are mentioned for this son in this document either.
John B. Floyd was educated in South Carolina, practiced law in Arkansas, and returned to Virginia in 1839, settling in Washington Co. VA. This would indicate that JuliaÕs first 3 children (Darcus Louise French, b. 1835; Albert Pendleton French, b. 1836; and Letithia French, b. 1838) were not fathered by John B. Floyd because he was not in Washington Co. until 1839. No documented truth has been found that indicate John B. Floyd fathered any of Julia Ann FrenchÕs children.
John Buchanan Floyd was the Governor of Virginia. Smithfield Plantation, an 18th century landmark, was the Williamsburg-style home and birthplace of John B. Floyd. The house has been restored and is open to visitors. The plantation is in the New River Valley. DraperÕs Meadow was the first permanent English speaking settlement west of the Alleghanies. It was founded on land granted to Colonel James Patton in 1748. In July of 1755, a group of Shawnee Indians raided the settlement and killed all but four of the settlers. In 1772 Colonel William Preston, a frontier surveyor, settled on DraperÕs farm and established what is now known as the Smithfield Plantation. On 4 August 1778 William and Jane Black donated 38 acres of land that later eventually became the town of Blacksburg, which since then, has grown to be one of the largest towns in Virginia. James Patton Preston, a Virginia governor, was born on this plantation, as well as Virginia Governor John Buchanan Floyd.

In Mar 2008, he wrote the following: ÒI looked over the information you sent. I am astonished and disappointed that the efforts of some of the "researches" have lead them astray from the truth. Gordon French (the only surviving male bloodline I believe) and I have done considerable research on the John C. French family in past years including interviews and many hours in Virginia courthouses as well as the normal data gathering. A considerable amount of our research is in conflict with the chart information I certainly hope you will extend the courtesy of reviewing our information before this chart goes public.Ó I replied to Jerry French and Gordon French, hgfrench42@yahoo.com, on 12 Mar 2008. On 16 Mar 2008, Jerry replied saying that he is not ready with his information, but that he has an old tape naming the fathers of JuliaÕs children that is being cleaned up and transferred to disc which he will forward to me along with the source so that I will understand where most of the controversy originates.

[24] Terry D. Smith, tdsfamgen100@earthlink.net. TerryÕs family starts with Albert Pendleton French, and she would like to know whom his father was. Only thru DNA can this issue be solved. You'd need to research the different men who could have been Albert's father, such as Call, Floyd, or Crabtree, -- then you'd need a male descendant for Albert to test his DNA. Mara did a bit of research on Floyd to check the times when he and Julia lived in the same area so she could rule out various children. I think you'd need to check Washington Co., VA around the 1835-1850 time period.
