This French family starts from North Carolina and Tennessee. There is another unrelated Peter French of Knox Co., TN whose ancestry is on FFA Chart #129. Also see FFA Chart #14 for a French family from Madison Co., KY. Breckinridge Co., KY, was formed in 1799 from Hardin Co. where a Jacob French received 500 acres of land in 1796 from Capt. Jacob Van Meter listed on the Hardin Co. KY Tax List. Many French ancestors of FFA Chart #137 lived in Hardin, Bullitt, and Nelson Counties, KY.
1.1 William French, b. ca. 1760. No proof yet. There is a William French in the 1810 census of Madison Co., KY, living with a female (probably his wife), both over the age of 45. He is the only French in the 1810 census in Madison Co. In this same census, Peter FrenchÕs name does not appear; however, John French appears in Mason, Mason Co., KY, living with 7 young children under age 10, and no other children. In 1810, Peter would have been 25 years old.
2.1* Peter French, b. 1785 in TN (listed as Tenn in census records) [6] [10], m. Nancy Hanks [1] in Knox Co., TN on 3 Jul 1810. The 1810 and 1920 census records are lost for Knox Co., TN. Peter d. in Breckenridge Co., KY on 31 Mar 1856 [1] [10]. Nancy was b. ca. 1795 in NC, the dau. of Luke Hanks who was b. in VA, and she d. in Breckenridge Co., KY in 1856 [1]. Peter was a blacksmith who was in Madison Co., KY in 1830 and in Breckenridge Co., KY in the 1840 and 1850 censuses [1]. Peter may have been his middle name and not his first name which could have been John [1]. Two sisters may have been in Madison Co., KY with him; this is only a guess [1]. These sisters may have been Elizabeth French, who m. John McDunner on 17 Apr 1799 and Ruthy French who m. Robert Daughtery in 1800, both in Madison Co., KY [1]. Nancy HankÕs grandfather, Luke Hanks, deeded some of his land to a ÒJohn FrenchÓ in Breckenridge Co., KY [13]. Luke Hanks was buried in Union Star, KY, in 1856 [13].

Nancy Hanks family came from Prince William Co., VA from 1775-1783. They moved to Halifax Co., NC, then Knox Co., TN (where Nancy m. Peter French), and finally to Breckinridge Co., KY [15]. These two families may have migrated together. PeterÕs brother could have been William French. This William may have been the son of James and Keziah (Calloway) French of FFA Chart #14, see 4th Generation William French b. 1 Mar 1785. His family also lived in Madison Co., KY. President Abraham Lincoln was b. 12 Feb 1809 in a log cabin on a farm in what was then Hardin Co., KY (now Larue Co.) to Thomas Lincoln and Nancy Hanks; the timeframe is correct for Nancy Hanks, but not the person. However, they did move to Gentryville when Abe was 7.
There is a James French (b. ca. 1801) who was in the Breckinridge Co., KY in 1830 thru 1860 census records who could have been the brother of Peter, but no proof [10].

William got into an argument about the war in 1861 at age 42 with Marion Patton, who pulled a gun. Jack French stepped between them and was shot. Marion Patton got on his horse and rode away [10]. JackÕs son, Lewis, who was then age 9, led his father home where he later died [10]. Ref. [10] acquired a letter from James French (son of William) to his cousin, Lewis, confirming the story. Marion Patton apparently enlisted in the Union Army after the shooting [10]. William joined the Confederate Army, but he died before he returned home, possibly in AR or KY [2].
