these names. Because John had son John Jr. ca. 1684, he immigrated as a young

Richard, b. ca. 1775 (fifth generation), lived in New Jersey until at least 1809 as his son Moses was born 27 Mar 1809 in Walpack, Sussex, NJ, and then moved to Cross Creek, Washington Co., PA, where he is listed in the 1810 census, age 26-44 (born 1766-1784), with a total of 5 in the family, including a son under 10, 2 daughters under 10, and his wife age 26-44.
Marriages
Richard m1. Easter Scrosman or Esther Croswell ca. 1799 in NJ [6] and had 3 children. She was born ca. 1775 in NJ and d. 27 Oct 1804 in Sussex County, NJ.
The following record from the Walpack, N.J. Book 78, page 143, of the Dutch Reformed Church shows RichardÕs wifeÕs name as Esther Croswell baptizing their daughter Caty who was born 14 Jan 1803.
Richard m2. Elizabeth Van Vlerdenor or Van Vlerah or Vanvlerah or Van Vlierden or Van Auken shortly after 27 Oct 1804 in Sussex Co., NJ [6] (NJ state records say Van Auken) [5]. She was b. ca. 1781-1790, and died Feb 1850 in De Kalb, De Kalb County, IL. They are found in the Minisink Valley Reformed Dutch Church Records 1716-1830 baptising 3 of their children (Marie, Moses, Sarah) before 1810. ÒAnÓ Elizabeth Van Vlerah from Tuscarawas Co., OH, m. Harrison Parker and had son John Parker b. 28 May 1859 [20]; no connection yet found. The name Van Vliere appears in the Walpack, N.J. Book 78, page 111, of the Dutch Reformed Church. John Van Vlieren was a deacon in 1793. This booklet is handwritten, 169 pages, with hundreds of names.

1802 -- Richard French witness to a will in Knowlton Twp. Sussex Co., (included Warren County until 1824), NJ. w/Green and Ludom. The Jonathan Layton family lived in Sandiston township, Sussex County, NJ, in the 1800 census. Knowlton was also known as Hardwick.
1804 Oct 27 -- Richard m2. Elizabeth Van Vlerdenor or Van Vlerah or Vanvlerah or Van Vlierden or Van Auken on 27 Oct 1804 in Sussex Co., NJ
1810 -- Richard, his wife, and three children appear in the census of Cross Creek, Washington Co., PA. He is listed as age 26-44 (born 1766-1784), with a total of 5 in the family, including a son under 10 (Moses), 2 daughters under 10 (Marie and Sara), and his wife age 26-44. It is unknown where his earlier 3 children from his first wife were living.
1812 War of – In 1812 Richard was 37 years of age. A record exists in Pennsylvania for ÒaÓ Richard French in the 1st Regiment of the Pennsylvania Militia as a Private under Ferree. This could be a record of another man with the same name as no age is given.
1820 -- Richard French is listed in the census of Dohrman township, Tuscarawas Co., OH. Dohrman Tract or DohrmanÕs Grant was a land tract in eastern Ohio granted by Congress to Arnold Henry Dohrman (1749-1813), who helped the American cause in the Revolutionary War. Dohrman was from the Netherlands. Today this area is part of Harrison and Tuscarawas Counties.

From Rush Township, Chapter XIII, p. 627, ÒThe History of Tuscarawas County, OhioÓ. The early settlers came chiefly from Pennsylvania. They were mostly unlearned and many were superstitious.
1830 -- Richard is on the 1830 census enumeration in Dohrman township, Tuscarawas Co., OH. He was living in between John Crum and William Crum (husband of RichardÕs daughter Marie).

Richard French has an almost exact DNA match of 66 of 67 with Ezekiel French (FFA Chart #21), b. 17 Jun 1775 in Essex Co., NJ, d. 1 Jan 1861 near Troy, Miami Co., OH [5]. Richard also migrated to Ohio. Ezekiel was the son of Aaron French, b. 8 Sep 1739 in Monmouth, Co., NJ and moved to Amity, Washington Co., PA in the 1790s and died there on d. 31 Aug 1805. Richard had also lived in Washington Co., PA, moving there in 1810. However, Ezekiel does not show up as the brother of Richard per FFA Chart #21.
5.2 William French, b. 20 Mar 1782 in Oldwick/Germantown, Hunterdon, Mercer Co., NJ [17]. He was baptized on 14 Jul 1792 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Oldwick, NJ, as the son of Richard and Selletje French [21]. His parents were her witnesses [21].
5.3 Anna French, b. 2 Jul 1783 in Oldwick/Germantown, Hunterdon, Mercer Co., NJ [17]. She was baptized on 9 Aug 1783 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Oldwick, NJ, as the daughter of Richard and Selletje French [21]. Her parents were her witnesses [21].

She m. George Antrobus on 18 Sep 1820 in Tuscarawas Co., OH, according to the Selected Counties of Ohio, 1789-1850 Marriage Index; however, no stable record can be found for this marriage. She was named after her grandmother Selletje, wife of Richard French.
6.2 Susy or Susana French, b. 25 Jun 1801 in Walpack, Sussex Co., NJ, christened on 10 Jul 1803 (all 3 sisters christened at the same time) in Walpack Dutch Reformed Church, Sussex Co., NJ [6].

Susy m. Charles Peter Everett on 27 Jun 1822 in Tuscarawas Co., OH [17]. Charles used the name Peter and was b. 17 Mar 1800 in Gnadenhutten, Northampton, PA. His mother died when he was only 13 in New Philadelphia, Tuscarawas, OH. His parents were Joseph Everett and Sarah Elizabeth Davis. The name Gnadenhutten is a family name and a cemetery in Tuscarawas County, OH, received that name where Sarah Adeline Myers (married a French) was born 14 Feb 1852 and d. 8 Dec 1876.
In the 1830 census, Peter and Susy lived in Dohrman, Tuscarawas, OH. He was age 30-39, and they had 2 daughters aged under 5, 1 daughter age 5-9, and Susy was age 20-29.
In the 1850 census, he lived in Rush, Tuscarawas, OH, where he was living with his wife Susana, and their 5 children: Rebecca M. Everett (20, Alvin E. Everett (16), Jane E. Everett (15), William D. Everett (13), and David W. Everett (9). Peter was a carpenter.
6.3 Caty or Catherine French, b. 14 Jan 1803 in Walpack, Sussex Co., NJ, christened on 10 Jul 1803 (all 3 sisters christened at the same time) in Walpack Dutch Reformed Church, Sussex Co., NJ [6]. She d. before 2 Jul 1876 in Perry Co., IL [17].
From the Walpack, N.J. Booklet 78, page 143, of the Dutch Reformed Church. Easter Scrosman is spelled Esther Croswell. After this 1803 date, it is possible that Easter/Esther died during childbirth, as Richard French re-married immediately thereafter on 18 Jan 1805.
Catherine m1. Resin Porter on 4 Dec 1823 in Dohrman, Tuscarawas Co., OH [17]. He is listed in the 1830 census of Dohrman with one son age 5-9. Resin is age 20-29 and Caty is the same age. He d. bef. 3 Apr 1835 in Tuscarawas Co., OH. Living very nearby is her half-brother Moses French, who was married with one son under age 5. Note that another man named ÒReason PorterÓ shows he was born in 1801 in OH and was living in Polk, IA in 1850 and married to Ann Porter, and that he died 16 May 1876 – perhaps he and Catherine parted ways.
Catherine m2. David Gibson on 3 Apr 1835 in Tuscarawas Co., OH [17]. They appear in the 1840 census of Rush, Tuscarawas, OH, no children. David was b. ca. 1805 and died on 2 Jul 1876 in Perry Co., IL.

That census count does not match the known children. Did the older children stay with another relative?

In 1850 he is listed in District 7, Perry Co., IL as a farmer, age 33, born in PA.
He m1. 23 Sep 1838 in Tuscarawas County, OH to Mahala Barr, daughter of Daniel Barr, and had 8 children. Mahala was b. 18 Jan 1823 in OH, d. 7 Oct 1866 in DuQuoin, Perry Co., IL on the family farm. They are both buried at Cudgetown Cemetery, Perry Co., IL, which is where the school stands now – the stones were removed and piled in a corner of the lot. MahalaÕs tombstone was partially broken and the date is partly missing. Shortly after they married, they moved to Illinois and can be found on both the 1850 and 1860 Federal Census for Perry Co., IL. Mahala had a brother named Ira Barr who supposedly lived in Ireland. It is said that Richard was in partnership in a department store in Philadelphia, PA. He moved to Perry Co., IL ca. 1849-60 [5]. Mahala was said to have had red hair.
Richard m2. (Mrs.) Mary Columbia (Turner) Lawrence and lived in Coffeyville, KS, or in Randolph County, IL, on 8 Oct 1867. She was a widow with 3 daughters.
The first eight children (1 daughter who died young and 7 sons) were from Richard Jr.Õs first wife and the last two were from his second wife. Her husband had been killed in the Civil war. She bore Richard Luther and Richard Edgar French. Her husband, Richard ÒDickÓ French died a few days after his son Richard Edgar was born - leaving Mary a widow once more. The 7 sons from Mahala did not get along well with their stepmother, Mary, and after Richard's death, the farm was sold off. Mary took her children and moved to Kansas to be near her sister's family, and the 7 sons split up and moved down into LaClede Co., MO and Arkansas. While living in Kansas, Mary lost a daughter, Anne, and son, Luther, to a poison well. She left the area and remarried a third time to a man named John Whittenberg. They settled in Madison Co., MO. She and he raised Richard Edgar French. Mary also had an additional daughter with John Whittenberg - named Nettie in 1879 in Audrain Co., MO.
6.10 Elizabeth French, b. 26 Sep 1827 in OH (unproven). Elizabeth was living with her brother Moses in 1850 in Mill, Tuscarawas Co., OH [6]. She m. Philip Smeltz on 7 Apr 1859 in Tuscarawas Co., OH [6] [17]. They appear in the 1860 census of Salem, Tuscarawas County, OH, Philip is 41 and Elizabeth is 35, and their son Arther is 8.

7.11 Robert French, b. ca. 1841 in Tuscarawas Co., OH [6]. His father died the following year, 1842. In 1850 he was living in Salem, Tuscarawas, OH. The 1850 census also shows another child living with this family of mother and 4 children, and that was Harrison French, age ½ year. In the 1860 census, Harrison was 9, living in Salem, Tuscarawas Co., OH, with the same family, and it says HarrisonÕs entire family was born in Ireland, which we know is not true. Harrison is not found in any further census records. Robert was killed in the Civil War on 8 Oct 1862 in Perryville. A researcher found a short report that linked Robert with a Crum boy (cousin?) and another boy named William Lewis (possible link to widow Selete who married a Wm. Lewis/Louis?).
From Rush Township, Chapter XIII, p. 449, ÒThe History of Tuscarawas County, OhioÓ. The early settlers came chiefly from Pennsylvania. They were mostly unlearned and many were superstitious.

"A Noble Record": In the neighborhood where now is the village of Wolf, Tuscarawas Co., OH, seven farm boys enlisted in August of 1862 to serve for 3 years in the Civil War and were joined to Co., K, 98th O.V.I., Capt Parrish's Company. They were Henry Cline, D.B. Moore, John O. Buffington, Abraham Crum, Lewis Fankboner, Robert French and William Lewis. Their regiment organized at Camp Mingo, near Stubenville, crossed the Ohio River at Cincinnati August 24 and immediately entered upon active field service. It's first battle was at Perryville, KY (Octobert 8, 1862) where the regiment was fiercely engaged and suffered a loss of 230 men killed and wounded. The squad of 7, before mentioned, suffered a loss in that battle of 3 killed - Abraham Crum, Lewis Fankboner, and Robert French. Two were severely wounded: D.B. Moore and John O. Buffington. One, William Lewis was knocked down by a caison wagon and badly bruised during the confusion of retreat from the first position..."

In the 1880 census, Moses was living with Mary C., age 21 (b. 1859), and he was age 36. He states that his father was born in PA and his mother in OH. They lived in Franklin, Laclede, MO. In the 1900 census of Washington, Vernon Co., MO, Moses was living with hundreds of unrelated lodgers, none with the surname French; he was 56. This was State Lunatic Asylum Number Three. Mary was involved with the Fairview School in Rolla, MO, and acted in a play as per the Rolla Herald on 5 Mar 1885. The critics said she was well spoken and entertaining.

Laban and his siblings were farmed out when their father died. In the 1880 census, Laban was living in Little Black, Randolph, AR, and states that he was born in OH and his father was born in PA, and his mother in OH. Laban d. 1894 in Success, Clay, AR. They had at least 4 children.

Richard moved to Coffeyville, KS. In the 1940 census of Okmulgee, Okmulgee County, OK, Richard, 70, and Henrietta, 67, are listed, Richard working as a clerk in a retail grocery. In the 1830 census of Okmulgee, Richard states that his father was born in PA and his mother in NC. They are living with their son Richard C. French, who is 19 and working as a foreman in a warehouse, and with their daughter Mary, age 31, who had m. Anderson. In the 1920 census of Okmulgee, Richard and Henrietta were living with their 4 children. Henrietta was b. 1872 and d. 1944; both are buried at the Okmulgee Cemetery.

RichardÕs father died when Richard was 2. He and his siblings Samuel and Lucinda were raised in Perryville with their mother, Margaret Ann Wilson French, and stepfather Daniel Hughey. Several Hughey step-brothers and sisters also lived in their home.
In the 1870 census, he lived in Township 5 Range 3, Perry, IL. In 1880 they lived in Pinckneyville, Perry, IL. RichardÕs brother Samuel died the following year. After Richard moved to Texas, they had a daughter and son. In 1912, Richard lost his mother and in 1913 he lost his wife. He went on to live in Casa, Perry, Arkansas, and by 1930 he was in Louisville, Jefferson County, KY, until his death in 1955.
Richard m1. Martha (Mattie) Elizabeth Rice ca. 1908; she was age 16, born ca. 1892, and died on 11 Aug 1913 in Dallas, TX, at age 21. She was from DuQuoin. Richard m2. Loulie I. Fegenbush, 1872-1964 in Louisville, Jefferson Co. [17].
Richard was one of 95 young men who received a diploma from Hospital College of Medicine at the Masonic Theater in Louisville, KY, announced in the Courier-Journal of Louisville, KY, on 4 Jul 1905.

Walpack, Sussex County, New Jersey
Montague was formed out of Walpeck, and is believed to be named for the Duke of Manchester, George Montague, as part of Sussex County. It was settled by 1701, when its people were ordered to vote in Ulster County, NY. They had come from Esopus (now, Kingston, NY), & followed the waterways and Native American trails. The Dutch West Indies Co., probably had trading posts here before the homesteads. The early settlement was known as Menissink - across from that island. The first settlers lived side by side with the Minsi [Lenni Lenape or Delaware tribe], and their property was deeded from the Indians. The treaty of Easton, in 1758, freed NJ from further Indian claims to land.
Until 1664, this area was controlled by the Dutch. Later, it was ruled by England and the Proprietors of East & West NJ. We shared one royal governor with NY until 1738. This area was included in the 1704 Minisink Patent from Queen Anne, which also covered property in present day NY, as our original northern boundary was to have extended to Station Point (near Cochecton, NY). New York also once claimed land as far south as Easton, PA and later to the southern tip of Minisink Is. Early town records note a Precinct of Menissink as of 1736 under Orange Cty. (recognized by NY in 1738). It came under Sussex County, NJ in 1755 and was renamed the Precinct of Montague in 1759. The compromise boundary between NJ and NY was settled at the fork of the Delaware & Neversink Rivers in 1769.
The Minisink Dutch Reformed Church organized in 1737, with its first building about 1/2 mile south of present site. It moved to the River Road location in 1827. The current structure was built in 1899. An early mill, built by Thomas Quick, was in our Millville area - before he moved to PA. The French & Indian War, necessitated that forts be erected along the river. Indian raids then continued through the Revolutionary War. The "Old Mine Road" was the early route used for trade and troop movement and was visited by Mohawk chief, Joseph Brant, and Count Pulaski. The first houses were made of stone, as wood was a sign of wealth. First industries were mills (sawmills & grist mills), blacksmiths, tanneries and small stores. Small communities developed within the township: Brick House, Millville, and Tappentown/ Duttonville. Brick House, with its historic hotel, had businesses, a post office - and was considered the "Village of Montague". River crossings were by ferry until the bridge to Milford was built about 1829. The D&H Canal caused present day Port Jervis, NY to develop as a center of commerce and the Erie Railroad further affected the future of Montague. Our town evolved into an agricultural community. Along with growing crops, people raised chickens, turkeys, hogs and cows. Between 1820 and the Civil War, many went West - to new frontiers. In 1850, our population was 1010. In 1920, it bottomed out at 534. Education began in one room schoolhouses throughout the community. The present K-6 elementary school site on Route 206 began with only 3 classrooms in 1955. Six additions followed, with the last in 1997.
This French family belonged to the Wallpack Dutch Reformed Church, Sussex Co., NJ. Church Register of the Wallpack Congregation, formerly spelled Walpeck. The Dutched Reformed Church of Walpeck, NJ, began on 31 May 1741. The Van Campen family were founders. They immigrated thru Staten Island, NY, as did the French family.
Wallpack Township, formed in 1731 out of Hunterdon County, included the present townships of Montague, Sandyston and the former Pahaquarry. The Delaware River forms the western boundary and the Old Mine Road, supposedly built by Dutch miners before 1664, traverses the township. From Historic Markers.

In the Dutch communities, it is common to name for the grandparents. RichardÕs first wife is Easter Scrossman according to the DRC records. She died ~1794. His second wife is Elizabeth Van - Auken or Vlerah or Vlerah, depending on looking at State/Van Auken family? DRC records. However; The girls in "my" Richard family are Seletie, Caty, Susana, Mary and Sarah. Selitie- I think for his step-mother, married to Richard French at New Germantown, now Oldwick. Assuming that Richard's wife is the free white female listed in the 1810 census as then being between 26 and 45 years of age, she would have been born between 1765 and 1784, according to the 1810 census.

It was here in the valley of the Stillwater that the first settlement in the township was made. The six sections which form the eastern part of Rush, 19, 20, 25, 26, 31 and 32 of Township 13, Range 7, like those in Mill Township, are a portion of the Dohrman tract. It began to be settled about 1808, and in 1820 the following settlers resided here and owned property: Thomas Archbold, the east half of Section 19;

[33] MANIFEST DESTINY: A Brief Family History
The story has to start with the earliest French we have found that is known to be directly connected by blood-
Richard French b. ~1775. He is in Walpack, Sussex County, NJ. in the 1790's.
It is probable that he is either the cousin, brother or the nephew of Moses & Henery Frensh, they are on the 1774 Sussex County Tax lists records for Sussex County. Yet, @ 18, Richard is in Walpack in 1793, Moses resides in Sandyston, now Union Co.; and Henry is at Newton Twp.., to the east.
We know an Aaron French was the son of Moses French per the recording of his marriage to Mary Myers: " "Aaron French, son of Mof[s]es late of Sandeston, dec with Mary Myers, daughter of Bastian Myers of Montague, May 28, 1797
The above couple have been married by me the date as above." Guisbert L. Sutfin, Justice.
Aaron and Mary named a daughter Easter.
The Brit's trashed this part of our Country when they resisted our independence - so a lot of records including the 1790 NJ. census were destroyed.
Richard and Easter (S)crosman (DRC records) christen Selitie, Susana and Caty in 1803 at the DRC at Walpack, Sussex Co. NJ.
Selitie was b. 1799, all 3 are born by 1803. Mary was b. 10 Jan 1804. (m. Wm. Crum; d. 1891 see below).
I have found an Easter Beadle who married Jacob Crosman in 1797 in Sussex Co. could Richard's wife be "the widow Crosman"? Easter could also be a daughter of John Crissman and Maria Johanetha Schoonhover. They married in Dec. of 1773 and lived at Stillwater, just N. of the Warren Co. line, & S. of Newton.
The family moved to Washington Co., PA. in time to be on the census there for 1810. That census count does not match the known children. Did the older children stay with their Aunt/ grandparents?
There had been French's in Washington Co., PA for some time, I am not sure if they are related. Aaron French (potentially a brother or cousin) is still there in 1810 as he has a daughter Ruth born in Nov. that year; however he moves to Ohio and is not on the 1810 census.
Interestingly, PA early marriages relates that: (#)150; July 13, 1815, Hugh Logan to Martha Latimore of Buffalo. By Rev. Mr. French. That one marriage is the only mention of the Rev. Mr. French in that file.
Another son, Richard is b. in 1817. Our family moves to Tuscarawas, OH. in time for the 1820 census; Several of the children marry there.
Richard died in 1838.
Moses m. Jane Edie, they have sons Alexander, William, Robert and Richard.
Daughters also!
By 1852 there is a record of Richard (b. 1817) buying government land at Pickneyville, Perry County, IL.. In 1854, Moses purchases acreage nearby.
Another French purchases govmt. land near Duquoin.
On the 1860 Perry Co. IL. census, Jane and Moses' sons Richard and Robert are living with Alexander.
William lives next door with his wife Margaret Willson and daughter Lucinda. Samuel is b. 1862, My grandfather Richard Vale French is born in 1864. William is deceased by 1867 when
Margaret Willson French, widow with 3 children remarries Daniel Waggoner Hughey, a Civil War union Calvary Vet. born in Va..
Richard V. is still with the family on the 1880 census. Hugheys are still on Pickneyville's 1890 census.
Granddad told me he mined coal before going to medical school.
There is an IL. marriage record for a Richard V. and Chitty Gussey in 1898. She remarries in 1900 and Richard age 36 starts medical school in Louisville KY.; graduating in 1905. According to the Rice family, he married "Mattie" Martha Rice in 1904.
He interns in Little Rock, AR.
They moved to Dallas TX. Thelma was born in 1906, Richard Jr. in 1909.
Mattie dies in August of 1913. Thelma goes to Louisville, lives with the Rice's. Richard goes to a Germanic orphanage.
Doc marries Mrs. Lou Boss, they move to Casa Ar. He Doctors, she fills Rx's in their Drug Store. Dad told me of catching the horse barefooted and without a rope to hitch it to the buggy so Doc could make his rounds. In 1926 fire destroys downtown Casa, including their store. They move to Ky. I think Lexington. He is a Railroad Dr.
1926 Richard Jr. joins the Navy.
Doc moves to Louisville, practice includes surgical privileges at Louisville Hospital.. Doc dies 1955.
Assigned to the battleship USS California, Richard is a Gunners mate. Medically discharged from the USN during the depression, Richard locates in Washington DC., attends radio school, starts a service business. Marries his office manager- Children: Richard D. II b. 1937.
Elizabeth b. '38 or '39 dies. Judith A. b. 1940, Mary 1944. While business is in DC., have home in Arlington, then Fairfax Park, Va.. We move to Durango, Co., in 1950. James R. b. 1951, William D. b. 1954. Becoming too ill to work, Dad returned to Casa, AR.. about 1965/6, d. 1970. Mom moved back to Durango, then St. George, UT. then Yerington, NV.; d. 1999.
Richard D. II joined Navy in 1955. m. Agnes Marie(Ame) of Chicago IL.. Served as USN Air Traffic Controller. Children Ame b. Key west, Fl.; Grace E. b. Argentia, Nfld. .; Richard and Carol b. South Ruislip, England ;
Denise and Steve b. Chicago
Aboard USS Forrestal for Gulf of Tonkin fire in '67. Divorced 1974. Married Anna @ Lake Tahoe, Ca. Became USN (Ret.) in 1980. Airport Manager: Danville IL. and then So. Lake Tahoe Ca.,
Retired, Anna and I Toured USA in our RV.
Moved to Sierra Vista, AZ in 1996.

[38] This handsome Dutch Colonial house, built in 1787, was the home of the Reverend Elias Van Bunschooten, appointee of the Synod of the Dutch Reformed Church to take charge of three consistories: Maghagamack, Minisink and Walpack in Sussex County, NJ. The Reverend Van Bunschooten was thirty-seven when he arrived in 1785, and served the area until his death, forty years later.
