NOTE: Please make any corrections or additions to this chart – although this is not my family, I will be updating it from time to time. Additions concerning the French surname are greatly appreciated. You will be notified of the next revision. Although this is not my line, I make additions to it, and you will be notified when your data or someone else’s data is added. My line is FFA Chart #6. I use the Microsoft Word html format because GEDCOM was not yet invented 40 years ago when I started, and converting this entire website to GEDCOM would be quite a large task; I have chosen to do more research instead.

Children of Samuel and Elizabeth (Ziegler) French, 3.1

4.1 William Alexander French [11], b. 21 Jan 1840 in Newville, Cumberland, PA, d. 3 Dec 1911 in Knoxville, Allegheny, PA, buried in the Newville Cemetery as the son of Samuel and Elizabeth French [41].

Allegedly, he was the son of Samuel & Elizabeth (Ziegler) French with siblings Erastus, Sarah Agnes, Margaret E., James, Matilda, Rebecca, Anna, Arabella, Charles Holland, and Elizabeth and, in 1860, was a teacher living with his family in West Pennsboro Township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. There is only one William French listed in the 1860 census for Cumberland County.

Per his obituary in the December 4, 1911, edition of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, he served with an Illinois regiment during the Civil War, although I have been unable to locate that regiment. There was a William A. French of the same age who enlisted in Newville, Cumberland County, June 20, 1863, mustered into state service at Harrisburg June 26 as a private with Co. F, 1st Pennsylvania (Ramsey's) Militia Battalion, and honorably discharged with his company January 9, 1864. This may be the same man, but nothing found so far confirms it, and the obituary makes no mention of this service. (However, military data found in Civil War veterans' obituaries tends to be notoriously inaccurate.)

The obituary also claims that after the war he opened a dry goods store in Lyons, Wayne County, New York, later relocated to Illinois, then finally to Seattle, Washington. After suffering a stroke, he moved to the home of his nephew Dr. J. A. Black in Knoxville, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, where he died from "cerebral apoplexy" with "pulmonary edema" a contributing factor. The Ancestry.com index for Pennsylvania death certificates erroneously claims he died in Tioga County, despite the fact the death certificate itself clearly says Allegheny County, thus leading to numerous errors in Ancestry family trees.
