1.1* John French, b. 1759 in Cornwall, England, m. Joan Kellow on 10 Apr 1787 in Tintagel, Cornwall, England, d. 28 Oct 1826 in Tintagel, Cornwall, England at age 67. Residence Trevena, same as Tintagel.
Tintagel or Trevena is a civil parish and village situated on the Atlantic coast of Cornwall, England. The village and nearby Tintagel Castle (see photo below) are associated with the legends surrounding King Arthur and in recent times has become a tourist attraction.
Joan Kellow, was the daughter of William Kellow (1736-1813) and Catherine Bishop (1738-1813). She was christened on 13 Jan 1767 in Tintagel, Cornwall, England, and died on 31 Dec 1836 in Tintagel, Cornwall, England [7]. She was buried 20 Jan 1826 at St. Endellion Church, residence Scarrabine, age 60. The Kellow family is documented back to about 1600 in Cornwall, England. The French family is documented only back to John French, b. 1759. Only 2 of their 9 children immigrated to Canada. See [12] for details.
To make an educated guess as to who was John French’s father, an assumption could be made that he lived in Tintagel, Cornwall, England around 1759 when John was born. Only these children are listed and were born about that time and in that same place, but without any positive relationship to John. Their father Henry French could have been John’s father or uncle. Reviewing the birthdates, another child was born in the same year as John.

were Henry and Philippe French
Moses French, b. 1767, baptized 16 Mar 1767 in Forrabury, his parents

John’s father may have been Henry French who married Philippe. Henry would have
been born 1733 or before. Listed is a Henry French, born 1729, died 2 Jul 1794
in Forrabury. The website www.findmypast.co.uk
shows no other clear connection. Henry French married Philippa Tucker (or
Tooker) on 27 Feb 1749. This marriage date fits in with the birthdates of the
children listed above, but no authentic connection has been determined to John
French.

2.1* Thomas French, b. 1800, Tintagel, Cornwall, England, baptized 17 Jun 1800 in Tintagel, the son of John and Joan French. He married Mary Hume Kellow on 6 Feb 1834 in PEI, daughter of James Kellow and Janie Tippett. Mary was born 25 Apr 1810 in Padstow, Cornwall, England, and died May 27, 1903 in Westmoreland, Lot 29, PEI. Thomas was a farmer and a Methodist [6]. Thomas d. before 1891, Westmoreland, Lot 29, Prince Edward Island (PEI) [6]. For details, see [22].

He m. 18 Aug 1829 [6] in St. Peter’s Church, Liverpool, England to Jemima “Jenny” Lloyd [1] [7]. She was b. 23 Dec 1803 at Caernarvanshire (Powys or Porthlwyd), N. Wales, per her gravestone, the daughter of Richard Lloyd (d. 1845) of Porth Lloyd and Elizabeth Williams Lloyd (d. after 1850). Jemima died on 28 Dec 1878 in Detroit, Wayne, Michigan, USA. See [13] for details.
James immigrated to Prince Edward Island, Canada in about 1830 with his wife Jemima Lloyd with whom he eloped. In 1850 James at age 47 left on a sea voyage from Canada and was never heard from thereafter. The ship was lost. Further notation suggests he died presumably in the waters of Indonesia [7] [1] [3]. See [14] and [15] for details.
Captain
French was a founding member of the town of Victoria (from the area called
Westmoreland) along with brother Thomas. Victoria, tucked neatly on the south
shore of Prince Edward Island, halfway between PEI’s largest cities of
Charlottetown and Summerside, was founded in 1819 by James Bardin Palmer, an
immigrant lawyer and agent for the Earl of Westmoreland. James French had
arrived in Westmoreland about 10 years after James Palmer. Today (2021)
Victoria has less than 100 inhabitants and Westmoreland has even fewer.
For the 70 years after James’ immigration, the French family descendants were the carpenters, boat builders, wheelwrights, home builders and church builders in the area. James was also active as a whaler in the North Atlantic, and a farmer. Captain James’ daughter-in-law, Barbara Holm, apparently mentioned to a cousin, that he was a pirate.

Phone: 416-620-5302, lives on Prince Edward Island, Canada, visited San
Jose in March 1999, contact numbers in San Jose area: 650-245-0544 and
650-323-2654. He brought me a photo of Prince Edward Island, the home of Samuel
Bateson French and family, and also a photo of Samuel Bateson French and
Barbara Graham Holm French. After entering data I had from 1994 from a member
of the French Family Association, and after reviewing the DNA results from
Julia French Wood, I happened to find a very valuable document from a French
descendant of Prince Edward Island called Northwind
Southwind. This document is far greater than I could ever produce, so I
will stop my research here and trust that you will learn about the PEI family
from Brian Lloyd French’s research at:

[10] The “Passenger and Immigration Lists Index” on ancestry.com shows George French in 1747 in Maryland, from data derived from return-forms connected with the naturalization of “Foreign Protestants”, papers that were sent from the Colonies to the Lords’ Commissioners for Trade and Plantations. The “Foreign Protestants” were a group of immigrants to Nova Scotia in the mid-18th century and the ethnonymical basis behind the name “New Brunswick”, as well as support behind naming "Prince Edward Island" for a representative of the Braunschweiger dynasty. At that time, Nova Scotia was a British colony, but populated by 10,000 French-speaking and Roman Catholic Acadians which was a great problem by the British administrators of the area. Attracting British immigrants was difficult as most preferred to go the warmer southern colonies. Therefore, a plan was developed to aggressively recruit “Foreign Protestants”. These came mostly from German duchies and principalities on the Upper Rhine Palatinate area, and the duchy of Württemberg was the major source, but there were also “Foreign Protestants” from Monbéliard in France (very close to the German border), and parts of Switzerland and the Netherlands. The British government agreed to provide free passage to the colony, as well as free land and one year’s rations upon arrival. These new arrivals spoke German, except those from Switzerland and Monbéliard who spoke French. But, . . . these were mostly from 1749 and the French family’s earliest known whereabouts was in 1747, two years prior.

Hello:
My name is Shirley MacKinnon and I am tracing my
grandfather, James Ramsay's family history. He is Arthur Ramsay's
brother.
Gertrude French and Arthur Ramsay had the following
children:
Harold Ramsay, born: Sept. 15, 1900
Mable Ramsay born: Sept. 1904
Addie M. Ramsay April 1908
Source: 1911 PEI Census
I believed they moved to Boston, Mass. area. I
remember my Mom talking about Mable coming home for visits from Boston,
Mass. She married a Mr. Manning who worked as a lineman for the telephone
co.
I checked the web for Harold Ramsay 1900 and found one
deceased in 1972 in Bridgewater, Plymouth, Massachusetts. Could not find
his obtituary.
My grandfather, James Ramsay worked in Boston where he
met my grandmother Mary Blue MacDonald also from PEI. She was nursing in
Boston at that time. They moved back to PEI.
I will read your family history for any clues to help
me find my grandfather or his parents. His parents are unknown at this
time.
Shirley
Hi:
Found The Ramsay's Family History. My
grandfather's father name was Alexandra and his mother, Louisa Sullivan.
We are part of John Ramsay, The Yankee. See
under The Island Registra.
My grandfather is not mention only Sophia Annie and
Arthur Ellis Ramsay.
Shirley MacKinnon,
Great Niece to Arthur Ramsay, Deceased 1911, Prince Edward Island
