Foreword

IÕve researched this line just about all I can from ancestry.com and from the internet. Additions need to come from family members or from local books or historians who havenÕt put their information online.

P.S. Although George French is not of my line, I will continue to do research on him as time permits. My line is FFA Chart #6.

History and Background

This French line from Exeter, Monroe Co., MI, lived in the same place and time (1860-70) as Richard C. French, FFA Chart #33. Both families used the name Cornelia and George, but no connection can be found.

First Generation

1.1* George French, b. ca. 1830 per the U.S. and International Marriage Records, and in NY per his daughterÕs statement in the 1910 census, m. Cornelia M. Beebel in 1846 in Michigan. George had no male heirs; therefore, this line ends here unless George had a brother who had male heirs. Beebel is a name from Bohemia. Cornelia M. Beebel was b. 1830 per her marriage record, and in NY per her daughterÕs statement in the 1910 census, and d. 1859, only 3 years after giving birth to her daughter, Cornelia. However, in the 1900 census of Gibbon, Buffalo Co., NE, his daughter states that both her parents were born in Michigan. George and Cornelia were living in Exeter, Monroe Co., MI, in 1856 when their daughter was born.

Cornelia may have had a brother named David F. Beebel who was a resident of Southampton, Suffolk Co., NY, age 21, when he registered for the U.S. Civil War draft as a volunteer in 1863; therefore he was b. 1842; he is listed here because the name Beebel is a rather limited name, and because he is from NY. In the entire ancestry.com database, there are only 53 people with the surname Beebel, and one of them is not Cornelia, indicating that she may have been born overseas.

The New York Passenger Lists from 1820-1957 include only one person named Beebel, James Beebel, who was b. ca. 1813 in Liverpool, England, and immigrated on the ship ÒScotlandÓ to New York on 16 Jan 1840. He was 27 years old and an Engineer.

George may have been the George French listed in the 1855 census for Monroe Co., NY, b. 1827 in Monroe Co., NY, a farmer, living in Gates township. In this census is also Cornelia French, wife, age 53, b. 1802 in Columbia, NY, lived 30 years in Monroe Co., NY, in the township of Ogden. She was probably the wife of Benjamin French, age 57, b. 1798 in NH.

Second Generation

Children of George and Cornelia M. (Beebel) French, 1.1

2.1 Cornelia M. French, b. 1 Sep 1856 in Exeter, Monroe Co., MI, d. 8 Apr 1919 in Des Moines Co., IA, and is buried at the Riverside Cemetery in Gibbon, Buffalo Co., NE.

Cornelia m1. George Earl Watson on 26 Jul 1876 in Waltz, Wayne Co., MI. He was b. 20 Jan 1853 in Summit, OH, d. 25 Sep 1924 in Maybee, MI. They had 1 child: George Leroy Watson who was b. 17 May 1877 in Detroit, MI and d. 9 Oct 1959 and is buried at the Grand Island Cemetery in Grand Island, Hall Co., NE. In the 1870 census, they lived in Exeter, Monroe Co., MI.

Cornelia m2. Rev. Sanford Hayes in 1883. Rev. Sanford Hayes was b. 23 Feb 1840, d. 12 Dec 1919 and is buried at the Riverside Cemetery in Gibbon, Buffalo Co., NE. They had 6 children, most born in Buffalo, NE: Glen R. Hayes, Joy C. Hayes, Charlotte Leotta Hayes, Sanford B. Hayes, Jr., John K. Hayes, and Clyde Hayes. In 1885 and 1900 they lived in Gibbon Village, Buffalo Co., NE. In the 1910 census they lived in Des Moines, Polk Co., Iowa.

Cornelia M.  Hayes and her son Sanford Beebe Hayes, Jr.
