IÕve researched this line just about all I can from ancestry.com and from the internet. Additions need to come from family members or from local books or historians who havenÕt put their information online.
P.S. Although Benjamin French is not of my line, I will continue to do research on him as time permits. My line is FFA Chart #6.
History and Background
Benjamin French, b. ca. 1796-1801 in Osnabruck, Upper Canada, Ontario but was originally from Scotland, m. Nancy McBride who was b. ca. 1811 in Ireland. They married ca. 1832 in Upper Canada, and had at least 5 children, all sons: Josiah, John, Benjamin, Gordon, Angus.
BenjaminÕs family lived in Nipissing Co., Ontario; Springer, Sturgeon Falls, Nipissing Co., Ontario; Petosky, Emmet Co., MI; Yakima Co., WA; and Sauk Center, Stearns Co., MN.
First Generation
It appears as if Benjamin French may have been the son of Benjamin French who is listed in the 1851 Census of Canada, living in Cornwall, Stormont Co., Canada West (Ontario), and b. 21 Sep 1780. He was also a farmer, age 72, living with Anne French, age 45, and Mary French, age 74. He d. at age 81 on 7 Jun 1862. His parents were Jeremiah French, 1743-1820, and Elizabeth Wheeler, 1745-1838. Jeremiah died on 5 Dec 1820 in Stormont, Ontario, Canada. His parents were Jeremiah French, 1712-1793 and Hannah Edwards 1715-1776. They are from Stratford, CT, and descendants of FFA Chart #11, the emigrant being Samuel French of Bradford Abbas, Dorset, England. Even though the Benjamin French in FFA Chart #11 was born 21 Sep 1780, his son Benjamin French was b. 18 Jul 1818 and this line was from England, not Germany, plus, none of the children match.
1.1* Benjamin French, b. 1796-1801 (as per various census records) in Osnabruck, Upper Canada, Ontario but was originally from Scotland, m. Nancy McBride who was b. 1809 in Ireland (as stated in the 1881 census of Canada). They married ca. 1832 in Upper Canada, and had at least 5 children, all sons: Josiah, John, Benjamin, Gordon, Angus. Benjamin d. 21 Aug 1880 in Finch Twp., Stormont Co., Ontario, at age 80, and Nancy d. between 1881-1891.
Census Records
1861 census of Canada, age 60, b. 1801 in Canada West, married, and living in Russell, Canada West, belonging to the Church of England. He was married to Nancy, age 50, b. 1811 in Ireland. They were living with their son Josiah, age 28, b. 1833 in Canada West; son John, age 22, b. 1839 in Canada West; son Benjamin, age 20, b. 1841 in Canada West; Gordon, age 12, b. 1849 in Canada West; Angus, age 9, b. 1852 in Canada West. The men in the family were all farmers and laborers.
1871 Census of Canada shows Benjamin as age 75, b. 1796 in Ontario, married, belonging to the Church of England, of German origin, Living with his wife Nancy, age 60, and their children Josiah, John, Gordon, and Angus. He is listed as German origin.

2.1* Josiah French, b. 1833-1837 (as per various census records) in Osnabruck, Canada West, Ontario, d. before 6 Apr 1891 in Nipissing, Nipissing Co., Ontario, m. Margaret Stewart on 15 Dec 1885 at The Parsonage, Crysler, Finch Twp., Stormont, Ontario. She was b. 27 Aug 1857 in Ireland.
Josiah and family probably removed to Springer,
Nipissing Co., Ontario in conjunction with his brother, Benjamin, and his
family. Alternatively, Josiah died in Russell County, and his family elected to
remove to Nipissing with Benjamin. Either way, Margaret was in Nipissing Co
when she remarried in Dec 1891.
2.2 John French, b. 1839-1843 (as per various census records) in Osnabruck, Canada West, Ontario.
2.3 Benjamin French, b. May 1843 in Osnabruck, Canada West, Ontario, d. 25 Sep 1920 in Springer, Sturgeon Falls, Nipissing Co., Ontario. He m. Elisabeth Stevenson on 25 Dec 1877 in Valleyfield, St.-Louis-de-Gonzague (Presbyterian Church), Valleyfield, Quebec. She was born in Scotland and d. 19 Jan 1925 in Yakima, Yakima Co., WA. They had 4 daughters: Anne, Jane Ellen, Ethel Maud, and Edna M. French.
Daughter Ethel Maud French buried at Nipissing Junction Union Cemetery.
2.4 Gordon French, b. 1849-1851 (as per various census records) in Osnabruck, Canada West, Ontario, d. 11 Sep 1911 in Petosky, Emmet Co., MI. He m. Adeline in 1890 and had a daughter, Margaret Ellen. Adeline was b. ca. 1848 in Canada and d. 13 Jul 1936 in Petosky, Emmet Co., MI.
2.5* Angus H. French, b. 15 Dec 1842 in Osnabruck, Canada West, Ontario, d. 14 Jul 1930 in Tieton, Yakima Co., WA, and is buried at the Tahoma Cemetery, Yakima, Yakima Co., WA at age 78. He m. Elsie Alice Jane Hawn who was b. 23 Jul 1854, in Stormont Co., Ontario, Canada, dau. of George Hiram Hawn and Elsa Jane Holester. August and Alice resided in Cowiche, WA in 1904. Alice d. 28 Feb 1940 in Yakima, Yakima Co., WA.
1881 Census of Canada
Angus, Alice and children went with William and
Joseph Hawn, two of Alice's brothers, and their families, and several of
Alice's unmarried siblings to Minnesota.
In the 1885 state census, W J Hawn, M A, W C, M J, J A, G W, Ellen I, and
H S in one family; Joseph P, George Ann, Charles, Minerva C. and Ada Alice. All
appear in Grove Lake, Pope Co., WI.
