The earliest American ancestors of the Elbon family who arrived before the Revolutionary War (1775-1783) consistently used the Christian names John, Reuben, Nathaniel, James, William, Samuel, and Mathew. According to many online websites, anyone 16 to 53 years old during the Revolutionary War time and living in the original 13 colonies may have participated in the Revolutionary War in some capacity. This would mean that Nathaniel and Mathew were born after 1726; John was born after 1725; and William and Reuben were born between 1728-1765. Another website states that men between the ages of 16 and 65 were members of the militia. The other group of American soldiers was the Continental Army, and they were trained and drilled as fighting men, as were all these Elbons. The majority of the soldiers were ages 18-24; younger boys worked as messengers, water carriers, and drummers. Many wives, mothers, and children followed the army; they sewed clothes, cooked meals, tended the sick, and washed the laundry.

Grundy, Wright, or Jewell families. The entire family spells their name Elbourn

“Jump” Elbourn and Edith Muriel Elbourn are brother and sister.
An early letter (1963) to Judy Elbourn Curtis from Muriel
Batchelor to Judy’s mom and dad (Pete and Leona Elbourn), has some interesting
family remembrances of Muriel who was the wife of John Robert Batchelor, and
daughter of Thomas James Elbourn, grandaughter of Lemuel Joseph Elbourn. She
states that her grandmother, Sarah Catherine Benton Elbourn, told her Lemuel's
people came from England when Lemuel was a small boy. They settled in what is
now called Edesville (then called Forktown) between Rock Hall and Chestertown,
Kent County, MD. Muriel's Uncle Joe (Joseph Lemuel Elbourn) and his wife,
Harriet Elizabeth Beck, and their children lived in Piney Neck. Harriet
Elizabeth Beck Elbourn died in 1900 leaving 5 young children. Muriel's parents
raised these children along with their already large family.
