ÒSAMUEL ELBEN. At the present time Mr. Elben is the owner and operator of the daily stage line between Greer and Pierce, which goes via Weippe and Fraser. This is a fine line and is handled in a skillful and wise manner by Mr. Elben. He has plenty of good stock, excellent rigs and does a thriving business. In addition to this Mr. Elben owns a farm two miles southeast from Weippe which is a valuable and well-tilled estate. A detailed account of the interesting career of Mr. Elben will be quite in place the history of Shoshone County.
Samuel Elben was born in the vicinity of Newark, Ohio, on November 30, 1865, being the son of Rufus and Isabel (Shaffer) Elben; natives of Ohio. The mother married a second time, her husband being Morgan Moates, a veteran of the Civil war. They live near Newark. Our subject was raised by his grandparents until ten and then worked out for the farmers until about 1896, receiving his education from the district schools during this time.
In the year last mentioned he came to Spokane, where he remained one year variously employed. Then he went to the Big Bend country and later to Kittitas County, near Roslyn and mined for gold some. Two years were afterward spent in the Palouse country in the vicinity of Pullman, and then he came to the Weippe country and filed on a claim, but as it proved worthless for agricultural purposes, he relinquished to the government and then bought his present place, which is a valuable piece of land. Mr. Elben does a general farming business and handles some stock. He handled sub-contract on the mail from Weippe to Pierce for four years, and then took the contract from the government to handle the mail as stated above, and he has done a fine business in the express and passenger traffic since. Mr. Elben has no full brothers and sisters.
On February 20, 1901, Mr. Elben married Miss. Bertha, daughter of Harrison K. and Jennie (McLean) Vanartsdalen, natives of Philadelphia. They now live two miles west from Mr. Elben's place. Mrs. Elben was born near Columbus, Nebraska, on April 1, 1884, and she has one sister and two brothers, Eliza, Thompson, Isaac G. Mr. and Mrs. Elben were married at Pomeroy, Washington.Ó

Ella Elbin resided in 1911
at 821 Main St. Wheeling, Ohio Co., WV according to the 1911 City Directory. There
is also a Wheeling, Belmont Co., OH. She was doing domestic work and apparently
wrote her grandmother in Belmont Co., OH, that she would visit her shortly.
Ella appears
in the 1900 census of Washington, Licking Co., OH. She was b. Sep 1889
in OH, the daughter of Willis and Sophia Lefever Elben. Her siblings were Otis and Edward R. Elben.
The
following photo may have been of this Ella; see explanation below.
Ella Elbin taken ca. 1911, possibly sent from OH to her grandmother in WV. Ella Elbin resided in 1911 at 821 Main St. Wheeling, Ohio Co., WV according to the 1911 City Directory. Because she wrote to her grandmother on 6 Jun 1911, and considering Ella is in the sixth generation of this family, that would take us back to the fourth generation, and her grandmother could very well have NOT been an Elbin. Therefore, she was either writing to the mother of Willis (her father) who would have been Ruth Ann Fowler who did not live in WV, plus Ruth was not alive in 1911. Her step-mother after Ruth died was Mary Catherine Deal who died on 21 Jun 1916, but she was last living in Knox Co., OH. Or Ella could have written to the mother of Sophia Lefever (her mother). Sophia LefeverÕs parents were both born in Belmont Co., Ohio.
Susan King, susanking@carolina.rr.com, believes Ella was the daughter of John W. Elbin who resided in Barnesville, Belmont Co., OH in the
early 1900's. The photo was taken around 1911 and was sent to her
"Grandma" in West Virginia (WV is next to OH). Don't know how, but it
ended up in a yard sale. I would love to be able to return the photo to a
direct descendant.
Susan King states that the studio, as listed on the front, is Baker Art
Studio in Barnesville, Belmont Co., OH. Barnesville is a village in
Belmont Co., OH, and is located in the central portion of Warren township in Belmont County. It is part of the Wheeling, West
Virginia Metropolitan Statistical Area. John W. Elbin
is the only Elbin family I know to have lived during
the time the photo was taken (dated June 6, 1911) in that area. On the
back is an inscription to her grandma (possibly in WV) and it's
signed "Ella Elbin." For further details,
see http://www.family-genealogy-online.com/Geary/ella-elbin.html.
