1900 census in Chapel, Talbot Co., MD. Milton is listed as the son of William S. Elbin, age 37, and Hannah Elbin, age 35. He has siblings May Elbin age 12 and Fletcher Elbin age 8. His father, William S. Elben, states that he was born in Delaware in Nov 1862, and that his father was born in New Jersey and his mother in Delaware.

1906 – approximate date Milton m. Nevia.

1910 census -- Milton is living in Chapel, Talbot Co., MD, age 25, living with his wife Nevia and their sons William M. Elben age 3 and James F. Elben age 1. Also living with them is MiltonÕs cousin Benjiman H. Elben, age 18, who was b. 1891 and was orphaned at a young age. Benjiman d. 1955 and buried at the Denton Cemetery in Caroline Co., MD, after Milton died in 1941. In this census Milton states his father was born in Delaware and his mother in Maryland. His wife and children were all born in Maryland.

1918 in Prince GeorgeÕs Co., MD, when he registered for WWI draft.

1920 census of Nottingham, Prince GeorgeÕs County, MD, Milton states that both his parents were born in Delaware; Milton is living with Nevia and his 5 children, married to Nevia Francis Hopkins who was b. 16 Apr 1884. They were living with their 5 children: William M. (12), James F. (10), Eugene J. (8), Stewart E. (6), Lenard J. (2). In 1924 when his father died, they were living near Upper Marlboro, Prince GeorgeÕs County, MD.

1930 census in Election District 8, Anne Arundel Co., MD, Milton is living with Neva and his 6 children: William M. Elben (b. 1907), James F. Elben (b. 1909) Elben, Stewart D. Elben, Lenard F. Elben, and Margaret N. Elben. Milton was a farmer. In this census, Milton states that both his parents were born in Maryland.

1940 census of Anne Arundel Milton was living with his wife and children Eugene, Leonard, and Margaret, and next door to him were living his other two sons William and James who were both married.

1941 Jul 18 – Milton was age 56 when he died, and was buried at the Christ Episcopal Church Cemetery in West River, Anne Arundel Co., MD.

 

8.2 Anna May Elben, b. 11 Mar 1888 in MD, baptized 2 Aug 1888 at All Saints Church with sponsors Mrs. W. T. Elben and Mollie Kautz. Anna May Elben d. 3 Mar 1949 in Easton, Talbot Co., MD. She was buried at the Greensboro Cemetery in Caroline County, MD. She married Harry Cooper Hopkins who was b. 12 Jan 1886 and d. 11 Jan 1963 in Deers Head State Hospital in Salisbury, MD. Anna had children Margaret Rebecca Hopkins, Hannah Truax Hopkins, Dorothy May Hopkins, and William Cooper Hopkins.

1888 Mar 11 – Anna May Elben was born in MD.

1910 census – She is living in Chapel, Talbot County, MD, married to Harry C. Hopkins, with children Margaret 2 and newborn Hannah P. She states that both her parents were born in Delaware.

1920 census – Lived in Ridgely, Caroline County, MD, age 31, married to Harry C. Hopkins, 34, and living with their children Margaret Hopkins 12, Hannah Hopkins 10, and Dorothy Hopkins 9. She states that both her parents were born in Delaware.

1930 census – She was living in Election District 7, Caroline County, MD, married to Harry C. Hopkins, living with 2 of their children, Hannah F. 20 and Dorothy 19. She states that both her parents were born in Delaware.

1940 census -- Caroline, Maryland, Anna M. and Harry C. Hopkins were living on Greensboro Road, and they were living with AnnaÕs younger brother Fletcher C., age 48.

1949 Mar 3 – Anna Hopkins died in Easton, Talbot County, MD.

Mrs. Anna M. Hopkins

Ridgely, Md., March 5, 1949 -- (Special) -- Mrs. Anna Mae Hopkins, 61, died at the Memorial Hospital, Easton, Thursday after a short illness. She was the wife of Harry C. Hopkins, a farmer of Ridgely and the daughter of the late William S. and Hannah Rash Elben.

She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Margaret Wright of Denton, Mrs. Hannah Schaube of Baltimore and Mrs. Dorothy Simons of Ridgely; a sister, Mrs. Enoch Nuttle of Federalsburg; a brother, Fletcher Elben of Denton, and several grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at the Moore Funeral Home, Denton. The Rev. Lloyd B. Troutman, pastor of the Ridgely Methodist Church, will officiate. Interment will be in Greensboro Cemetery.

 

8.3* Fletcher Cooper Elben, Sr., b. 2 Dec 1891 in Longwoods, Talbot Co., MD, d. 27 Nov 1968, age 76, in Denton, Caroline Co., MD. He m. Virginia ÒJennieÓ Patrick in Dec 1910. His parents ran the Tuckahoe Roller Mills and used paper flour sacks when Fletcher C. Elben ran it (see below). He d. 27 Nov 1968 in Denton, Caroline Co., MD, and is buried at the Greenmount Cemetery in Hillsboro, Caroline Co., MD. Kenneth M. Patrick and Melvin I. Patrick are buried at the Pittsgrove Baptist Church Cemetery in Daretown, Salem Co., NJ, showing that the family was in that area even in the 20th century.

Jenny M. Elben was b. 1893 in Maryland, and is listed in the 1940 census of Easton, Talbot Co., MD, living at 220 S. Harrison St. in Easton (photo below). She was a ChildÕs Nurse. She was the niece of Hugh McMahan.

Fletcher ran the mill on the Tuckahoe River in Denton, MD, and put corn meal in these sacks.

1930Õs Farm of Fletcher Cooper Elben Sr., house just right of Tuckahoe Rd. and along the Tuckahoe River. The towns of Hillsboro and Queen Anne are in far background. The farm across the Tuckahoe River on the far right belonged to Fletcher Cooper Elben Jr., and the farm below it on far right on this side of the Tuckahoe River belonged to Fletcher Cooper Elben Sr.

Farm had cows, hogs, chickens, ducks. Flour Mill owned as early as 1673. None of the structures in the photo above still exist except for perhaps a small shed.

1910 census -- Fletcher is listed as Fletcher C. Elben, living in Hillsboro, Caroline Co., MD. He states both his father and mother were born in Delaware.

1915 Jun 16 Newspaper clipping from Darline Cannon:

Neighbors of Mr. and Mrs. Howard B. Wright, Tuckahoe Neck, gave them a surprise party on Monday evening, the occasion being their sixteenth wedding anniversary. There were present Mr. and Mrs. Frank Fleming, Mr. and Mrs. William Elben, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Clark, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Beauchamp, Mr. and Mrs. Fletcher Elben, Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Roe, Mr. and Mrs. William Higgins, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Wright. Mr. and Mrs. William Cannon, Mrs. Ed Hoffman, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Ewing, Mr. and Mrs. J. Whitby, Misses Maggie Cade, Dora Powell, Hilda Elben, Naomi Clark, Louise Fleming, Elizabeth Whitby, Ellen Roe; Messrs. Harry Moore, Mareese Roe, Ormond Wright, Clayton Roe, Jr., Russel Fleming, Everett Clark, Cooper Elben, and Alton Higgins. A very pleasant evening was spent and many were the good wishes expressed for the good health and happiness of Mr. and Mrs. Wright.

1917 – registered for the WWI Civilian Draft, stating he was born 2 Dec 1891 in Longwoods, MD.

1930 census – Fletcher lived on Hillstown to ElbenÕs Mill Road, in Election District 6, Caroline Co., MD, 6th district, age 38, married at 19 years old, married to Jennie, age 38, who was age 20 at their marriage. Fletcher was a miller and farmer. They are living with son Cooper, age 17, b. 1913. Jennie, or Virginia, was a foster child of Mary Emma Dean Jarman Rickards. Fletcher d. 1 Dec 1968 and is buried in the Greenmount Cemetery in Hillsboro Co., MD. His wife Jenny died the year before. Fletcher was a miller and helped his father in ElbenÕs Mill and a Still. Fletcher states that both his parents were born in Maryland.

1938 Apr 21 -- Extract from Denton Journal April 21, 1938

Fletcher Elben, 42 year old farmer and Miller, of Tuckahoe Neck near here, was arrested Tuesday on a warrant sworn by his wife, Mrs. Jennie Elben, charging he threatened her with a shotgun and pistol. Two state troopers and Deputy Sheriff, Saulsbury Sparks arrested the man, taking his weapons from him. He was ordered held for examination by the state. Mrs. Elben told authorities her husband, armed with the gun and revolver, chased her from their home. [This article would indicate he was born in 1896 when in reality, he was born in 1891.]

1942 Apr 26 Registered for the World War II Draft while living in Ridgely, Caroline County, MD, at age 50. He was working at Ridgely Car. He was 5Õ 8Ó, 178 lbs, blue eyes, red hair, ruddy complexion. The Hopkins family was his sisterÕs husbandÕs family.

Fletcher d. 27 Nov 1968 in Denton, Caroline Co., MD, and is buried at the Greenmount Cemetery in Hillsboro, Caroline Co., MD.

Fletcher C. Elben Sr.

Fletcher C. Elben Sr., 76, a retired farmer from the Denton area, died Wednesday, November 27th at Mt. Wilson Hospital in Baltimore after a long illness.

He is survived by a son, F. Cooper Elben, Jr. of Denton; four grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. Enoch Nuttle of Federalsburg. His wife Mrs. Jenny Elben, died last year.

Services were held Sunday afternoon, December 1, at 2 p.m. at the Moore Funeral Home, Denton. Interment was in Greenmount Cemetery.

8.4 Hilda Elizabeth Elben, b. 9 Apr 1903 in MD, d. 12 Dec 1974 in Easton, Talbot Co., MD, and is buried at the Hill Crest Cemetery in Federalsburg, MD, m. Enoch Nuttle on 4 Oct 1931. He was b. 20 Apr 1901 in Caroline Co., MD, and d. 20 Dec 1987 in Easton, MD.

1903 Apr 9 – Hilda Elizabeth Elben was born.

1910 census -- Hillsboro, Caroline Co., MD, shows her at age 7, the daughter of William S. Elben and Hannah L. Elben.

1930 census -- she was a Boarder living in Ridley, Delaware County, PA, with the Jackson family, who was the family of her motherÕs second husband. She states her father was born in Maryland and her mother in Delaware. She was a teacher at the public school.

1931 Oct 4 -- at age 26, married Enoch Nuttle.

1940 census -- Federalsburg, Caroline Co., MD when she was 37 and he was 39. They lived on West Central Avenue. She states both her mother and father were born in Maryland.

1974 Dec 12 -- She died in Caroline Co., MD.

Hilda E. Nuttle

Hilda E. Nuttle, 71, of Federalsburg, died at Memorial Hospital, Easton, Thursday, Dec 12. she was the wife of Enoch Nuttle, Federalsburg. Born in Caroline County April 9, 1903, she was the daughter of William and Hannah Rash Elben.

A graduate of the State Normal School at Towsn, she taught sixth grade at the Federalsburg Elementary School from 1922 to 1928 then taught in the Public school at Folson, PA, until 1931, when she retired from the teaching profession.

Following her marriage to Mr. Nuttle, she assisted him in the Edward E. Nuttle and Son business at Federalsburg until her death.

Mrs. Nuttle, a member of the Caroline County Garden Club, was a past president of that organization.

She is survived by her husband and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Sunday, Dec. 15 at the Hawkins Funeral Home, Federalsburg. The Rev. Harrel W. Pitsenbarger, Pastor of the Union United Methodist Church, Federalsburg officiated.

Burial was at Hill Crest Cemetery.

8.5 Benjamin (Ben) Harrison Elben, b. 29 Sep 1891 in Longwood, MD, m. Vena Smith. She was b. in 1884, and d. 1956, and is buried at the Denton Cemetery in Denton, Caroline Co., MD. Vena was born Josephine H. Smith and m1. Harris. No known heirs.

1891 Sep 29 – Benjamin was born in Longwood, MD.

1900 census -- Baltimore Co., MD, age 8, living with his grandparents, William T. and Georgianna Elben. Benjamin became an orphan when his mother Rosa died 1 May 1893 at age 24 when Benjamin was only 2 years old and his father, Clement, died in Sep 1906 when Benjamin was only 15.

1910 census -- Chapel, Talbot Co., MD, age 18, living with his uncle, Milton S. Elben, as BenjaminÕs father had died in Sep 1906.  

1917 Jun 3 – Benjamin got an exemption from WWI as he had a child to support but was not married. Perhaps that child was Elizabeth Waters, age 11, who appears in the next census. Ben was short, stout, with blue eyes and sandy hair, living in Talbot County, MD.

1920 census -- Chapel as the head of household, age 28, living with Jessie Calloway 49, Vena Smith 35 widow, Mary Harris 64 widow, Elizabeth Waters 14, and John Wells 71, all unrelated people.

1930 census -- Chapel, Talbot, Maryland, at 180 Queen Anne St., Benjamin is married to Josephine H. Harris, 41, also living with Mary V. Harris, age 75, his mother-in-law. He was a farmer.

1940 census at 12A New Bridge Mathews Road in Talbot, MD, as ÒBenjamin H. ElbinÓ, age 47, married to Vena (nickname for Josephine Harris), plus living with Alfred Harris, 60, perhaps his brother-in-law. Benjamin states that both his parents were born in Maryland. He was a farm manager and completed the 2nd year of college.

From the 1920 census, Vena Smith was living in BenjaminÕs household and is 7 years older than Benjamin. Vena M. Smith was b. Vena M. Emmett on Apr 1885 in Delaware along with her brothers Herman W. Emmett and Fitz L. Emmett, all the children of William Smith 32 and Elma C. Smith 42, and they appear in the 1900 census of Philadelphia. In the 1910 census of Darby Ward 3, Delaware Co., PA, Vena M. Smith was 25 years old and married to Alanson S. Pratt, age 27, listed as Vena M. Pratt age 25. In the 1920 census of Chapel, she was no longer using the surname Pratt, but reverted to her name Vena Smith. Most likely her mother Elma C. Smith was either born a Emmett or married a man named Emmett. From the 1880 census, Elma Emmett was 23 with her two young children, E. Maud Emmett 4, and Fitz Leon Emmett 1, living with her parents Peter Waller Adams 46, and Clara M. Adams 44.

1942 Apr 27 -- Benjamin enlisted in the WWII draft, white, weighing 218 lbs, 6Õ 11Ó tall, gray eyes, gray/bald hair, light complexion, age 51 on 27 Apr 1942.

1955 Mar 9 – Benjamin Elben died in Easton, MD. He had lived in Matthewstown. Newspaper article is from the Denton Journal, 11 Mar 1955. No known heirs.

8.6 John Elbin, b. 27 Jul 1906 in Philadelphia, PA, d. 27 Jul 1906, in Philadelphia, son of Oscar Elbin born in Maryland and Katherine Higgins born in Delaware. Oscar L. Elbin is listed in the 1905 City Directory of Philadelphia living at 2431 Carlisle St., and his occupation was a Cutter. John was buried at Northwood Cemetery in Philadelphia.

8.7* J. Harry Elborn, b. 1904 in MD, married Cora Belle Crew, daughter of William T. Crew. In the 1930 census she was single living in Dixon, Queen AnneÕs County, MD.

1920 census of Dixon, Queen Anne County, MD, at West From Barclay, single, laborer on a farm, living with the Bradley family: Addison Bradley 35, Ella A. Bradley 27, Wm Bradley 9, Grace Bradley 2.

1930 census -- Election District 3, Queen Anne County, MD, Harry is listed as ÒHarry J. Elborn: but index thru ancestry.com as ÒElbamÓ, b. 1903, married to Cora B. Elborn, age 21, with 2 children: Francis A. Elborn 2, and Harry R. Elborn just born. Harry states that both his parents were born in MD. He owns his own home. Cora states that both her parents were born in MD.

1940 census – Listed as ÒJ. Harry ElbornÓ, b. 1904 in MD, living in Election District 2, Queen AnneÕs County, MD.

1955 Dec 16 -- From the Denton Journal in Denton, MD, 16 Dec 1955. Barclay is in Queen Anne County, MD, just south of Sudlersville.
