LaytonÕs Mill House (ElbenÕs Mill) on Tuckahoe Road in Hillsboro, Caroline Co., MD. On the Tuckahoe Road south of Hillsboro stands an early 19th Century mill structure, which has been converted into a dwelling. Judging from the corbeled cornice, it dates around 1810-20 as this feature is rarely seen on Eastern Shore buildings before that date. A mill was established on this site in 1739 by John Baynarad and Henry Carson. ŌMill LandingĶ was surveyed in 1768 for James Seth who built a brick mill. The latter is mentioned in a deed in 1776. Subsequent owners of the mill included the names of Nichols, Ireland, Knotts, Sparklin, and Elben.
The mill was known as KnottÕs or ElbenÕs mill, and was standing in 1804 as per a plat filed in the ClerkÕs Office in Denton. At that time it was known as MorganÕs mill and was included in a tract of 1500 acres of land belonging to Henry Nichols and extended much of the way towards Hillsboro. The floods of 1919 left roads in a bad way at FaulknerÕs bridge near Federalsburg. The Tuckahoe Neck Pipe bridge was carried away, and at the Sparklin or Elben mill, the road was impassable on account of a big cut.
Fletcher Cooper Elben Sr. is sitting by the Tuckahoe River in the black hat in front of ElbinÕs Mill ca. 1930 and in May 2013 on the following photo. The mill was remodeled in the early 70Õs to be a home. The man in the white cap could have been FletcherÕs father, William Sherman Elben as he often wore a white cap, see photo under Marriage below. See also the enlarged version of this photo below of ElbenÕs Roller Mills from Darlene Cannon.

She had been living at 1324 Vine St., Ward 10 in Philadelphia. She is listed at the Woodland Cemetery as the daughter of Wm Elben and Geogina Elben. Elbin 3, and Ella Elbin, just born, Samuel Mann (blacksmith) 21, and Gabella Saddler (cook) 14. Everyone in this census except William Elbin 27 was born in Maryland. Because he was 27 years old, he must have had a good idea as to where he was born.
7.4 Ella V. Elben, b. 25 May 1870 in Galena, Kent Co., MD.
Ella ca. 1895 at age 25.
Ella m1. George Fletcher Terrell (not Ferrell) on 23 Jul 1890 in Newport, New Castle Co., Delaware (he was a druggist), and died in 1937 in Barratts Chapel Cemetery in Frederica, Kent County, DE. He and Ella must have divorced as he remarried Bessie E. Terrace who was born in 1882 and is buried in the same cemetery. George was b. 7 Aug 1867 in Cherry Hill, Cecil County, Maryland and in the 1870 and 1880 census records, he was living with his parents in Elkton, Cecil County, MD. He was the son of George C. Terrell (1825-1889) and Rosena Shaw Heilenman (1839-1900). Her marriage record to George states that her father was William T. Elben (born in Pennsylvania) and her mother was Georgiana (Mann), born in Maryland. George was a druggist and died in 1937.
Group shot,
ca. 1895, of the sons of George C. Terrell (1825-1889) and Rosina Shaw Heilenman (1839-1900) and their spouses. Standing, L->R:
John Veasey Terrell, George Fletcher Terrell, Harry Gilbert Terrell. Seated, L->R: Irene _____Terrell
(spouse of John), Ella V. Elben Terrell (spouse of
George), Mamie Culleney Terrell (spouse of Harry).
Ella and George Terrell had 4 children; 2 were born before the 1900 census: Nettie Careen Terrell born 20 Nov 1892 in DE and Beatrice May Terrell born 1 Feb 1896 in DE. In the 1900 census of Wilmington Ward 8, New Castle, DE, these 2 children are listed, but for unknown reasons, it states that she and both her parents were born in Delaware. Nettie was baptized on 19 May 1896 in Chester, Delaware County, PA, at age 3, Methodist of the Madison Street United Methodist, along with her sister Beatrice. The Terrell family came from Massachusetts and originally from Yorkshire, England, spelled Tyrell, -- the earliest record is from Thornton, Buckinghamshire, England in the early 1500s.
Ella m2. William J. Jackson on 1 Feb 1916 at St. JamesÕ Church in Newport, New Castle, County, DE, when she was 46 years of age. She was living in Wilmington, DE. The most notable statistic on her second marriage certificate is that both parents nativity was from Germany (see second certificate) even though her father was born in Pennsylvania and her mother in Maryland. William J. Jackson was born in 1874 in Maryland.
The 1920 census of Wilmington Ward 9, New Castle County, Delaware shows Ella V. Jackson age 49, a widow, living at 1213 Claymont St., stating her father was born in Germany and her mother was born in Germany. She works at a Boarding House. She is living with John Terrell 18 (her son born in 1902 from her first marriage), Louise F. Terrell 17 (her daughter-in-law), Ruby V. Coffe 11 (her granddaughter), and Andrew L. Wingate 25, a lodger. Ella had no children from her second marriage to Jackson.
EllaÕs son John Harvey Terrell was born 28 Jun 1903 in Wilmington, New Castle County, DE, married to Louise Lenia Frances Baker on 20 Aug 1919 in Wilmington, New Castle County, DE, and perhaps to Mary R. as his second wife. He d. 23 Jun 1967 in Wilmington and is buried at the Silverbrook Cemetery in Wilmington.
1920 census -- Wilmington Ward 10, New Castle County, Delaware, living at 116 French Street was George F. Terrell and his wife Bessie F. Terrace; both his parents were born in Maryland. He was a Druggist and worked at a Drug Store. He was age 52 and Bessie was 38.
Ella m3. Smart, and was living in Hamilton Park near Wilmington, Delaware, at the time her brother died in 1924. She is listed in her brotherÕs obituary in 1924 as his sister.
1930 census – of Wilmington, New Castle County, DE, age 59, stating she is widowed, listed as Ella Smart, a lodger living with the Lentini, Smock, and Gale families, born in Germany, naturalized, working as a servant, immigrated in 1871. The name Ella Smart is the name her brother gives in his obituary. Frankly, I havenÕt a clue who she is, only that she is mentioned in her brotherÕs obituary as his sister. Notice that William S. Elben had a half brother born in 1866 who predeceased him, and a half sister, Anna May Elben who was still living when he died but is not mentioned in his obituary.
7.5 Stuard Elben, b. 3 Jul 1873, d. 3 Oct 1873 in infancy. He received the name Stuard after Thomas Stuard who married Anna Elben in the previous generation.
7.6 Clifford Newton Elben, b. 26 Apr 1875, d. 27 Aug 1875 in infancy.
7.7 Walter Elben, b. 1 Oct 1876, d. 1 Sep 1877 in infancy.
Children of William R. Elburn and Susan Hart, 6.9 – Queen Anne Line
7.8* Oscar Lee Elbin, b. 1871 in Crumpton, Queen Mary, MD, m. Catherine Francis Higgins on 8 Jun 1904. On the marriage record in Wilmington, Delaware, Oscar was 33, states that his father was William R. Elbin and his mother Susan Hart, and that his wife Catherine was 31 and the daughter of John Higgins and Bridget Haley. At this time, Oscar was living in Philadelphia, PA. Oscar L. Elbin died 8 Oct 1918 and is buried at Cathedral Cemetery, Wilmington, New Castle County, DE.
1871 -- Oscar Lee Elbin was born in Crumpton, Queen Anne County, MD.
1880 census -- As both his parents died by 1880, he is listed living with his grandparents John Harte 65 and Barbany Harte 58, and their aunt Sybilla Harte 22 and uncle Charles Harte 18 in Dixon, Queen Anne County, MD in the 1880 census.
1898 – lived at 300 S. Adams, Wilmington, DE, and was a shoe cutter. Also living in the same town was Alice Elbourn, widow of Charles, at 1010 Tatnall. Today a freeway goes right through this area and there are no houses in site.
1900 census -- Catherine Higgins is listed as age 25, living with her parents, John 75 and Bridget 74 and sister Agnes in Wilmington Ward 3, New Castle, Delaware, single, born in Delaware. Therefore, she and Oscar married sometime between 1900-1910. Note: Several Catherine and Katherine Higgins are listed as born in 1873 in Delaware; further study is required.
1904 Jun 9 -- Oscar L. Elbin m. Katherine F. Higgins on 9 Jun 1904 in Wilmington, New Castle County, DE. They had son John on 27 Jul 1906 in Philadelphia who died at birth after only 15 minutes.
1905 -- Apparently in 1905 both Katherine Higgins and Oscar Elbin were living in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, PA, as they had son, John Elbin born on 27 Jul 1906 and d. 27 Jul 1906, named after KatherineÕs father. Oscar L. Elbin is listed in the 1905 City Directory of Philadelphia living at 2431 Carlisle St., and his occupation was a Cutter.
The building they were living in located at 2431 N. Carlisle was renovated 1933, but shows the high ceilings of the 19th century.
1906 Jul 27 -- Their son, John Elbin, b. 27 Jul 1906 in Philadelphia, PA, d. 27 Jul 1906 after 15 minutes, in Philadelphia, son of Oscar Elbin born in Maryland and Katherine Higgins born in Delaware. He was born premature after 8 months. Oscar L. Elbin is listed in the 1905 City Directory of Philadelphia living at 2431 N. Carlisle St., and his occupation was a Cutter. No more heirs found. John was buried at the Northwood Cemetery.
1910 census – -- Wilmington Ward 3, New Castle County, DE, Oscar is 38, married to Katherine 37, and living with his father-in-law John Higgins. Therefore, his wife was Katherine Higgins. ŌOscar TelbinĶ states that he and both his parents were born in Maryland. John Higgins was widowed and he and both parents were born in Ireland; he was born in 1833. The original appears very clear as ŌElbinĶ, but the data entry person did not know the surname. Katherine Higgins was born in 1873 in Delaware; therefore, perhaps Oscar had moved to Delaware by 1900. Oscar was a shoe cutter.
1918 Oct 8 – Oscar died on 8 Oct 1918 and was buried in the Cathedral Cemetery in Wilmington, New Castle County, DE, that has almost 60,000 interments. Katherine died only 1 week later on 16 Oct 1918 and is buried next to him with their names spelled ŌElbinĶ. No other Elbins are buried in this cemetery. About 60 Higgins are buried in this cemetery; Bridget Higgins was buried 3 Dec 1894 and her husband John was buried 12 Feb 1916.
7.9* Harry Scott Elbin, b. 17 Feb 1873 in MD, m. Lottie Mae Eggert (actually the German equivalent was Eckhardt and she Americanized her name), had daughter May Elbin b. 1911. In the 1920 census he lived in Philadelphia at 1220 57th St. He was a car builder for a steam railroad. LottieÕs parents were born in Germany. She was b. 1879 in PA. The following article is from the Philadelphia Inquirer on 20 Apr 1920. As both his parents died by 1880, he is listed living with his grandparents John Harte 65 and Barbany Harte 58, and their aunt Sybilla Harte 22 and uncle Charles Harte 18 in Dixon, Queen Anne County, MD in the 1880 census. Thereafter they moved to Philadelphia where his mother was living and after his father died on 17 Apr 1888.
1873 Feb 17 – Harry was born in MD.
1880 census -- As both his parents died by 1880, he is listed living with his grandparents John Harte 65 and Barbany Harte 58, and their aunt Sybilla Harte 22 and uncle Charles Harte 18 in Dixon, Queen Anne County, MD in the 1880 census.
1910 census –Harry was married to Lottie Mae Eggert and they were both living in Philadelphia Ward 44, Philadelphia County, PA. Harry states that he and both parents were born in MD. Daughter Mae L. was born 2/12 or 2 months before the census was taken. The census enumeration date was 18 Apr 1910; apparently she was born in Feb 1910. Only the 3 of them were in this census together. Supposedly they had a son, Harry Elborn, b. ca. 1904, but it is unknown why he wasnÕt with the family at this census.
1910 Feb – daughter Mae was born and is listed in the 1910 census.
1918 Sep 12 – Harry signed for the WWI Draft in Philadelphia. He was of medium height and build, brown eyes, grey hair, age 45. He lived at 1220 S. 57th St. in Philadelphia, white, and native born. 1930 census – Harry and Lottie lived with their dau. Mae, b. 1910, in Philadelphia. They were living at South 58th St. Harry states that both his parents were born in Maryland. He was a cabinet Maker. Only the 3 of them were in this census together.
