Elben Ancestry of Salem, New Jersey
3.1* William Elben, b. ca. 1758 in New Jersey. William Elben paid tax on land in Elsinboro, Salem Co., NJ, from 1788-1797. William died 7 Dec 1803, married Rebecca and had at least 2 sons and several daughters according to his will in 1803. Knowing that Rebecca had her last child in 1804 (she was pregnant when William wrote his will in Dec 1803), she could have been age 40 or born 1764 or afterwards. William owned land in 1788, therefore his birth year 1758 is only a guess.
William m. Rebecca K. Hall ca. 1788 at which time William was on the Tax List in Elsinboro, Salem County, NJ. They had 2 sons and several daughters according to WilliamÕs will in 1803. His last daughter was born in 1804 just after William wrote his will on 26 Nov 1803 in Elsinborough, Salem Co., NJ, as she was pregnant at the time he wrote his will.
Rebecca K. Hall was b. 2 May 1759 in Salem, NJ, the daughter of Joseph Hall and Ann Key. Rebecca d. 9 Sep 1835 in Salem County, NJ, where she was buried at age 76. She was a Quaker listed at the Salem Monthly Meeting in Philadelphia, PA, to record births and deaths of those living in New Jersey. The name Elben does not appear in this register. Other surnames connected with the Elben family are Cooper, Clement, Ridgway, and Wright. The names Cooper Elben and Clement Elben were used in this family, and those names came from the Hall family.
Note: There was another Rebecca Hall who was born ca. 1756, married to Clement Hall, died 12 Sep 1835 at age 79, also from New Jersey. These are 2 different women. Another record states that the Rebecca Hall born on 2 May 1759 had married Clement Hall, and that she was the daughter of Joseph Key and Ann Key. They are all legitimate Quaker records, but the correctness depends on the person giving the information. There are at least 10 more similarities with the name Rebecca Hall, all written down in handwriting in Quaker ledger books.
Rebecca was still living in 1807 as she appears as a witness to a will. She did not remarry after William died in 1803.
Circumstantial evidence shows that WilliamÕs sons were William b. ca. 1788 and John b. ca. 1791, and he could have had more sons; he had several daughters, the last was a daughter born in 1804 after William died.

This is perhaps the first time WilliamÕs name spelled as Elbourn in NJ.
The New Jersey Abstract of Wills, 26 Nov 1803 mentions his wife Rebecca. William had two or more sons, not of age in 1803; therefore, born after 1785. He mentions ÒchildrenÓ, therefore he probably had daughters also, but that is unknown. Rebecca was pregnant at the time of WilliamÕs death; therefore, there must be a record of a child born in 1803/1804 in Elsinborough. Most men did not have a will in these early times unless they had some worth.
Jacob Mulford must have been noteworthy to William. He was born 23 Mar 1766 in Bridgeton, Cumberland Co., NJ. Many of the Elben family first lived in Bridgeton, Cumberland Co., NJ. Jacob wrote his will in 1790 while living in Cape May, Burlington Co., NJ, a city where the Ridgway family had also lived at that time, also a family connected to the Elben family. Jacob didnÕt die until 29 Dec 1822, and was buried on 4 Jan 1823 in Salem Co., NJ, at 57 years old, and was married at the time and a merchant of Salem, from ÒSketches of Salem, NJ, 1823-1826, compiled and edited by Frank H. Stewart. He was married to Hannah H. Thompson, and his mother was Prudence Maskell – no ties to Elben that I can see.
The Mulford family was from East Hampton, Suffolk Co., NY, in the 1650s, and immigrated from South Molton, Devon, England ca. 1640.
Salem Co NJ Wills 1804-1830 by H Stanley Craig - lists Rebeckah ELBEN as a witness to the Will of Cissah Fox - Will dated 08 Jul 1807 / Will proved 01 Aug 1807. This is the only will listed in the New Jersey Abstract of Wills, 1670-1817 regarding an Elben. This one was found in the 1806-1809 Volume. Hannah FoxÕs husband was Isaac Fox. Her relationship to the Elben family is unknown, if any.
Isaac Fox was born 29 Jul 1799 in Salem, died 2 Oct 1828 in Salem. His parents were Jacob Wilhelm Fox (1759-1831) and Luranay DuBois (1765-1824). Jacob was born in Salem, NJ. His parents were John Frederick Fox (1728-1777) and Sophia Margaret (1733-1777). John F. Fox was born in Palatinate, Germany in 1728 and died in Woolrich, Gloucester, NJ in 1777. Fox in German is Fuchs. This gives an idea of perhaps a similar path that William Elben might have taken.
Thomas Hancock was ?
In Rhineland-Palatinate, a small rather new town was named Elben, perhaps named after the family who immigrated to America.
The Pittsgrove Baptist Church is located at 368 Daretown Rd., Elmer, NJ.
Clement Hall is listed in the book ÒSalem More Than a Century AgoÓ indicating how the name Clement came into the Elben family, i.e., Clement Elben, b. 1838.
Hall: Hannah Hall was the dau. of Abner and Sarah Hall and she died at age 40 and is buried at the Salem County Cemetery, no dates given. Hannah HallÕs name appears as a member of the Pittsgrove Baptist Church of Daretown, Salem Co., NJ, between 1803 and 1829. As her name ÒHannah HallÓ is near the end of this list and closer to 1829 than 1803, she had not yet married William E. Elbin at that time, probably just before her marriage on 6 Jul 1826 according to the Salem Co., NJ, marriages, County Clerks Records by H. Stanley Craig. The Pittsgrove Baptist Church is located at 368 Daretown Rd., Elmer, NJ.
Hannah Hall, b. 1802 in NJ, dau. of Joseph Hall 19 Nov 1760 in Salem, d. 1816 in Salem, and Ann Brick 1765-1820. They were married on 26 Feb 1783 in Salem. Joseph Hall was the son of Clement Hall (1724-1768) and Margaret Morris (1723-1786); the name Clement is used in the Elben family of this line, and that is the only clue we have that this family may be tied to the Elben family. Hannah HallÕs siblings were Samuel, Margaret, William, Rebecca, Joseph, Ann, Edward, James, and Martha, all born between 1784 and 1804. Clement Hall was the son of William Hall 1701-1753 and Elizabeth Smith 1703-1776. William Hall was the son of William Hall b. 1660 in Ireland, d. 1714 and Sarah Clement, both of Salem, NJ.
Hannah A. Hall (married an Elben), undated, died at age 40, buried at the Salem County Cemetery, had married an Elben, was the daughter of Abner Hall and Sarah Shepherd; Abner and Sarah were married on 15 Aug 1774 in Cumberland Co., NJ; therefore, Hannah may have been born 1775-1785. Abner and SarahÕs probably had son Abner Hall who married Sarah C. Simpkins on 21 May 1844 and was b. 27 Sep 1811. Clement Hall m. Margaret Morris in Salem on 10 Feb 1745. Cumberland County is the county immediately south of Salem County.
Hannah A. Elben was born Hannah A. Hall ca. 1778 in NJ, the daughter of Abner Hall and Sarah Sheppard/Shepherd who were married 15 Aug 1774 in Cumberland, NJ. Hannah A. Elben Hall died at age 40 in 1818 was buried at the Salem County Cemetery. Abner Hall was b. ca. 1752 in NJ, the son of Francis Hall and Naomi Middleton. Sarah Sheppard/Shepherd was b. 1756, the daughter of Ephraim Sheppard and Sarah Dennis. It is unknown which Elben Hannah married, but she probably married about 1795. Naomi Middleton was born 23 Mar 1718 in Burlington, NJ, and was a Pre-Hicksite Quaker. The following record is from the U.S. Quaker Meeting Records for Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, and the eastern parts of Maryland, 1681-1935, taken ca. 1885.

Also, from the Eastern Neck, 7th Company, 1st Class, Kent County, MD, p. 21 of 36 pages, Captain John Page resigned. Captain John Page was born 1733 at Saint PaulÕs Parish, Kent County, Maryland, the son of Ralph Page and Elizabeth. He married Milcah Groom on 1 Jan 1764 at Saint PaulÕs Parish, Kent, MD. Their children Milcah, Henry, John, and James were born before the Rev. War. He enlisted on 27 April 1778.
Determining the age of Wm. Elburn Jr. is difficult only because several men had the same name. Researching the ages of the other men gives a better idea of WilliamÕs age. The average birth year of the men below serving in the same unit as William Elburn Jr. was 1760, or the soldiers were age 18-20 when they entered the war.
