Carroll Newton Elburn and his father, Charles Henry Elburn, are living with CharlesÕ brother John in the 1900 census in Edesville, Kent Co., MD. The way the census record is written leads one to believe that Carroll is the son of John, but he is CharlesÕ son. In this census of Edesville, Kent, MD, Charles is widowed, age 37, living with his brother John W. Elburn 34, and JohnÕs wife Mary N. Elburn 32, and their 4 children Herbert W. Elburn 9, Ivey M. 1954 Jun 7 – Charles Henry Elburn died in Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co., PA.
Charles d. 7 Jun 1954 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia
Co., PA, buried at the Wesley Chapel Cemetery in Rock Hall, Kent Co., MD.
Charles' death certificate and the records of Wesley Cemetery record that he is
buried in Wesley Cemetery. He also owned a plot in Wesley Cemetery, although
there are no tombstones on the plot. It is assumed that Charles is buried in
his plot at Wesley; the plot cannot be probed for caskets because of the roots
of an extensive root system from a huge Dogwood tree that cover the plot, per
Burgess Tucker, Wesley Cemetery.
Emma Isabel Kendall probably died in childbirth or soon thereafter and is buried in Charles ElburnÕs plot in Wesley Cemetery. She would have been buried before Wesley Chapel Cemetery in Rock Hall began to keep records. As with Charles, no stone. CharlesÕ father, William Samuel Elburn, originally owned the plot in Wesley, but bought a plot in Chester Cemetery in 1907 when Mary E. Deford Elburn died; she was the first buried in the Elburn plot in Chester. He sold the Wesley plot to son Charles Henry. These gives more reason for Charles to purchase the plot if wife Emma Isabel had been buried there.
6.3* John William Elburn, b. 4 Dec 1864 in Kent Co., MD, baptized John William on 30 Apr 1865 in Edesville, Kent Co., MD by Rev. Leary. He d. 11 Apr 1912, Kent, MD; his death certificate says he killed himself when he accidentally drowned in Rock Hall Creek – this probably means he drowned and not on purpose. He m. Mary N. Smith on 22 Mar 1889 in Rock Hall, MD; she was b. Oct 1867 in MD, and d. 1929 and is buried at the Wesley Chapel Cemetery. Because John died early, his son Herbert Wilton Elburn received inheritance from JohnÕs brother Richard Franklin Elburn.
1864 Dec 4 – John William Elburn born in Kent Co., MD.
1867 Oct – Mary Smith born.
1880 census of Edesville, Kent Co., MD, John William Elburn lived in Piney Neck/Edesville with his parents and 7 siblings. He had only 1 sister (see his brother Thomas above for image).

6.4 George Oscar Elburn, b. 10 Nov 1870 in Kent Co., MD, d. 9 Aug 1891, Kent, MD, age 21, buried at the Chester Cemetery, Chestertown, Kent Co., MD. He drowned and was originally interred in Wesley Cemetery in Rock Hall, but was moved to the Elburn plot in Chester Cemetery on 9 Jan 1915. He drowned at age 20 loading the boat with baskets of peaches in Rock Hall headed for Baltimore. He slipped off the dock and was crushed between the boat and the pier. He is listed in the 1880 census of Edesville, Kent Co., MD. No known heirs.
6.5* Walter Ludlow Elburn, b. 28 Jan 1873 in Rock Hall, Edesville, Kent Co., MD, d. 11 Nov 1969 near Chestertown in Queen AnneÕs, MD, buried at the Chester Cemetery, Chestertown, Kent Co., MD. Because Walter was born in Rock Hall, the indication is tremendous that the descendants of Samuel Elburn (b. 1783) and James Elburn (b. 1769), both of Rock Hall, were related.
Walter m. Mary ÒMollyÓ Rebecca Ringgold on 5 Oct 1910 in Chestertown, Kent, MD. She was b. 24 Oct 1888 in Queenstown, Queen AnneÕs Co., MD, d. 2 Dec 1968 in Tolchester, Kent Co., MD, the dau. of William Edward Ringgold and Susanna Arters. They had children William Walter, Joseph Arters, Edward Ringgold, Thomas Franklin, Richard Deford, and James Ellsworth.
Photo of Tolchester Park ca. 1916, where the family rode the train many times, but the best was the merry-go-round; it was an original made in Germany with the handcarved and painted horses. Walter and Molly, as a young couple, picnicked often at Tolchester. Sitting on the back bench (left to right) is Susanna ÒAnnieÓ Arters Ringgold, Walter Ludlow Elburn, Molly Rebecca Ringgold Elburn, and son William Walter Elburn. On the front bench is William Edward ÒNedÓ Ringgold, and Charles Drinkwater who was the son of one of NedÕs sisters and her first husband. Ned and Annie raised Charles. The two women at the ends of the benches are unknown.

How nice that someone
took this video as it probably brings back good memories.
Also see the ÒTidewater Maryland, an Embayed Coast PlainÓ Thesis written in 1918 by Walter Lefferts for his PhD. It has a map of the steamboat routes between Baltimore and the Eastern Shore. It also shows the railroad routes and addresses the early road system (or lack thereof) and explains about how people between Chestertown and Rock Hall tended to travel by water rather than by land. ItÕs an interesting little bit of early shore life.

Walter at this 96th birthday, 28 Jan 1969; he died later that year just 2 months before his 97th birthday. Just a few months before he died, he was out in his little skiff hand-tonging for oysters; photo below was taken in 1965 in the Chester River, contributed by Joan Elburn Farley. Tonging for oysters has really been upgraded these days with better boats and equipment, but it is still a tough job.

6.7 Richard Franklin ÒFrankÓ Elburn, b. 12 Oct 1878 in Kent Co., MD, d. 10 Sep 1929 in Easton, Talbot Co., MD, age 50, at the Emergency Hospital. He was buried at the Chester Cemetery, Chestertown, Kent Co., MD. His Death Certificate states his father was Wm S. Elburn of MD and his mother was Mary Elizabeth DeFord of MD. The informant was Walter L. Elburn of Chestertown, MD, his brother. He died of a fractured compound, depressed skull. His probate was on 10 Sep 1929 (47 pages). He is listed in the 1880 census of Edesville, Kent Co., MD. He was stuck by an automobile while gathering the mail from the box in front of the Chestertown Post Office and died from sustained injuries. He was taken to the Easton Emergency Hospital because his injuries were so severe that the small Chestertown Hospital could not handle him. He died 2 or 3 days later from a crushed skull. The irony is that it was not his day to work, but he was filling in for a co-worker who needed the day off.
He is listed in the 1900 census of Chestertown, Kent Co., MD. In the 1910 census of Chestertown, he is living with his father, William S. Elburn age 71 and his brother Walter L.
