The following video shows the steamboat ride from Baltimore to Tolchester in 1960:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BX0fhYYdmW0
How nice that someone took this video as it probably brings back good memories.
Also see the ŇTidewater Maryland, an Embayed Coast PlainÓ Thesis written in 1918 by Walter Lefferts for his PhD. It has a map of the steamboat routes between Baltimore and the Eastern Shore. It also shows the railroad routes and addresses the early road system (or lack thereof) and explains about how people between Chestertown and Rock Hall tended to travel by water rather than by land. ItŐs an interesting little bit of early shore life.
Children of Samuel ElburnŐs father, 2.1
3.1* Samuel Elburn, b. 15 Jan 1783 in Kent Co., MD, bought a 142-acre tract in Quaker Neck, Kent Co., MD, d. Jan 1839 in Quaker Neck, Kent Co., MD. He m. Millicent ca. 1809; she was b. ca. 1793 and d. 12 May 1848 in Quaker Neck, Kent, MD. Samuel was orphaned in April 1794 at age 11 and placed with Nicholas Riley until age 21 on 15 Jan 1804. He should therefore be listed in the 1810 or 1820 census unless he was not head of household. Most likely he is the male listed with his older brother James in the 1810 and 1820 census as a second male appears with SamuelŐs correct age.
From the Kent County's Orphans, Minors and Heirs 1778-1812 by Cynthia V. Schmidt 2002, page 30. April 1794:
The trustees of the poor do place and bind Samuel Elburn an orphan in the poor house to Nicholas Riley until arrives 21 years now being 11 years of age the 15th of January last past to be taught to read and write and arithmetic as far as the Rule of Three, and be taught the business and occupation of farming. For details on Nicholas Riley, see Guardian Nicholas Riley.
Therefore, Samuel was 11 years old on 15 Jan 1794 or born 15 Jan 1783. He remained with Nicholas Riley until 15 Jan 1804. Samuel was the youngest child of this family as no more orphan papers exist of younger children as his father died in the Revolutionary War. Furthermore, Samuel probably didnŐt have any older siblings while his father was in the Revolutionary War.
Samuel m. Millicent (surname unknown) ca. 1809 when he was age 26. They had 6 children, born between 1810 and 1830. Millicent was born between 1791-1800 as per the 1820, 1830, and 1840 census. In the 1810 census, she is shown as age 10-15, b. 1795-1800; most likely she was born in 1795 as she had her first child in 1810 at the age of only 15. Millicent d. 12 May 1848. In the Kent News of May 20, 1848, it states, Ňdied – in Quaker Neck, on the 12th instant, Mrs. Elburn.Ó This is the same exact format used for Samuel on the Chancery Papers dated 1849/11/23, where the Elburn family was foreclosing on the mortgage of ThomasŐ Purchase from Henry W. Archer, MillicentŐs name is not included with the names of all the children/heirs because she had just died the year prior.
1783 – Samuel was born.
1794 April – Samuel became an orphan at age 11 and lived at the home of Nicholas Riley. See Orphan. His father died about the time Samuel was born during the Revolutionary War and his mother died before Apr 1794 when Samuel became an orphan. Two women are listed in the 1790 census of Kent County, MD: Hannah Elbourn and Sarah Elborn. In this 1790 census, Samuel would have been 7 years old; both women had males of that age.
1800 census – Samuel would have been 17 years old – not yet married. His brother James is also not found in this census although he married in 1799.
1804 Jan 15 – Samuel left the home of Nicholas Riley at age 21. Samuel was orphaned at age 11 and presumably remained with him until age 21, or for about 10 years.
1809 – Samuel married Millicent about this time.
1810 – SamuelŐs first child Thomas W. Elburn was born.
1810 census –Although Samuel was married, he
must have lived with another family as he was not head of household in 1810. Most
likely he is the one appearing in his brother JamesŐ household in Kent Co., MD,
(no district stated) as ŇJas ElbernÓ with 4 slaves and 13 members of the
household. He is on p. 2 of 40 pages of the ŇoriginalÓ census record. JamesŐ
brother Samuel was most likely living with him.
2 males 26-44, ŇJas ElbernÓ, b. 1766-1784, head of household, and with
his brother Samuel, b. 1783.
2 males under 10, b. 1800-1810, JamesŐ 2 sons: James Jr. b. 1804 and George Henry b. 1810.
2 females under 10, b. 1800-1810, Ann and Juliann, daughters of James Elburn Sr.
1 female 10-15, b. 1795-1800, most likely Millicent, b. 1795, wife of Samuel, JamesŐ brother; he could also be the one listed as age 26-44 here as he was the youngest sibling of James.
1 female 26-44, Elizabeth Covington, b. 1766-1784, wife of James.
1 female 45+, b. before 1765, unknown. If you know who were the parents of Elizabeth Covington, please email marafrench@mindspring.com. She does not appear in the next census.
4 slaves – no ages or sexes were given at this early date.
Note that Samuel and Millicent had their first child in 1810, but apparently he was born after the census was taken.
1811 -- Samuel Elburn was a witness to the will of Charles Groome on 22 Oct 1811. Nicholas Riley was b. 25 Jan 1759 in Shrewsbury Parish, Kent Co., MD. Shrewsbury Parish is north of Chestertown near Kennedyville. Charles Groome was in the Revolutionary War on the Continental Troops, ranked Matross who was a soldier of artillery ranked next below a Gunner, and his duty was to assist the gunners in loading. Charles Groome appears in the 1810 census of Kent, MD, as age 26-44, head of household.
1812 – Samuel Elbone, 21st RegmŐt
(ReedŐs) Maryland Militia, Corporal. See Fold3 for Index card. He was NOT
the Samuel Elbert who appeared in the Battle of ChaulkŐs Field, as that
Samuel was the son of Henry Elbert, 1731 Talbot-1794 Queen Anne, and Ann Downey
1737-1794.
1816-1820 – daughter Mary Ann Elburn was born; she died ca. 1850.
1820 Census – Samuel was not head of household and is not listed. He is not living with his brother James Elburn.
1820 – son Edward was born about this time.
1823 – daughter Sarah Elizabeth born about this time.
1827 – son William Henry born about this time.
1830 – daughter Millicent Louisa born about this time.
1830 Census -- Samuel appears in the 1830 census of the 2nd District of Kent Co., MD, as ŇSamuel Elbem or ElbernÓ age 40-49, with a family of 14:
Samuel b.
1783, age 47, age 40-49 or born between 1781-1790
Millicent age 40-49, b. 1781-1790
Thomas W. b. ca. 1810, age 15-19, b. 1811-1815
unidentified female b. 1811-1815
Mary Ann, age 1816-1820
Edward b. ca. 1820, age 13, age 10-14, b. 1816-1820
Sarah Elizabeth b. ca. 1823, age 7, age 1821-1825
William H., b. 1825-1830, age under 5
Millicent Louisa b. 1830, age under 5
1 free colored male, age 10-23
2 male slaves under 10
1 male slave 24-35
1 female slave under 10
1834 – Samuel was a witness to the will of William Parks, Kent Co., MD, written 14 Jan 1834.
1837 Jan 4 – first son Thomas W. m. Sarah Garetta Elizabeth Ashley on 4 Jan 1837 in Kent Co., MD.
1837 Sep 26 – Samuel bought land known as ŇThomasŐ PurchaseÓ from the Honorable John B. Eccleston, the trustee for the estate of Bartus Trew. He died 1 ½ years later.
Note: The original patent was for 1000 acres; under ownership of the Thomas Family, it grew to 1080 acres, then it seems to have been parceled – the parcel Samuel bought was 142 acres. Other deeds for parts of ThomasŐs Purchase that sold by the Thomas and Trew families to others exist. Thus, the Samuel Elburn land was a portion of the original Kedgerton, resurveyed as ThomasŐs Purchase. As for Millicent, SamuelŐs wife, signing over administration of SamuelŐs estate to Thomas Walker, an exact same signing over of administration to Thomas Walker was made, signed, and sealed by son Thomas W. Elburn directly after MillicentŐs page, which probably means that Millicent had originally wanted her son Thomas to administrate his fatherŐs estate, but Thomas preferred assigning trusteeship to Walker. As for the census, Walker was a neighbor. Some of the deeds refer to the parcel as being bordered by the land of Thomas Walker.
1838 Jun 6 – SamuelŐs eldest son, Thomas W. Elburn, had son William Samuel Elburn born in Kent, MD, SamuelŐs first grandchild.
1839 Jan – From the Kent News of Jan 1839: Died in Quaker Neck, Mr. Elburn, age 82.
Samuel died in Jan. 1839 in Quaker Neck, Kent Co., MD, intestate – he did not give anything to anyone. On 22 Jan 1839, administration letters were granted to John Walker regarding proceedings of the court 1837-1847. SamuelŐs administration bond was filed on 22 Jan 1839. The final will was filed 22 Sep 1840.
In the case of intestacy, administration of the estate usually falls to the widow or adult children. The court will have a list of people eligible to fill the role of administrator/executor. In the will of Samuel filed 22 Sep 1840, the court appointed John W. Walker, John Constable, and William S. Constable as executors. On 21 Jan 1839, Millicent renounced her right to administer the estate and recommended John W. Walker as a suitable person to administer. Thomas W. Elburn, her eldest son, also renounced and recommended Ňas aboveÓ.

1845 Mar 12 -- Deed of Mortgage Millicent Elbern to Thos. Walker. See Thomas Walker and Death and Probate Estate and Guardianship Files.
1846 Feb 9 – son Edward married Sarah Ann Hall in Kent, MD.
1848 May 12 -- Millicent d. 12 May 1848. In the Kent News of May 20, 1848, it states, ŇDied – in Quaker Neck, on the 12th instant, Mrs. Elburn.Ó The format used to announce the death of Millicent is the same format as that used to announce the death of Samuel in the paper. This information was found by Joan Elburn Farley on 6 Apr 2014.
After Millicent died, apparently Edward lived there until the TrusteeŐs Sale in 1851. The proceeds of the Trustees Sale would probably be divided among the surviving heirs at this time.
1849 May 19 – daughter Sarah Elizabeth married John Byron in Kent, MD.
1849 Nov 23 -- Date: 1849/11/23 6003: Henry W. Archer vs. Edward Elbern, Mary Ann Elbern, William Henry Elbern, Thomas W. Elbern, John Bryan, Sarah Elizabeth Bryan, Millicent Elbern, Sarah E. Elbern, and William Elbern. KE. Mortgage foreclosure on Thomas Purchase. Recorded (Chancery Record) 178, p. 743. Accession No.: 17,898-6003-1/3 MSA S512-7-6089 Location: 1/37/2/ from the State Agency Series Listing at the Maryland State Archives, Chancery Court Papers, 1849-1853, MSA SSF 512. Millicent Elburn (the mother) does not appear as she died the previous year. See Death and Probate Estate and Guardianship Files.
Edward Elbern (son of Samuel), m. Sarah Ann Hall 9 Feb 1846, but her name not mentioned.
Mary Ann Elbern (daughter of Samuel, single and never married).
William Henry Elbern (son of Samuel).
Thomas W. Elbern (son of Samuel) still
alive between 23 Nov 1849, but died before Apr 1850 when his wife Sarah Garetta
Elizabeth Ashley died and the Census Mortality Schedule states she was a widow
as her son Thomas W. Oscar Elburn was living with Sarah Garetta Elizabeth
Ashley ElburnŐs mother, Mary Ashley, in the 1850 census. She may have died with
the birth of this son. Neither Thomas nor his wife Sarah appear in the 1850
census, enumerated on 20 Jul 1850.
John Byron m. Sarah Elizabeth Elburn Bryan (daughter of Samuel).
Millicent Elbern (Millicent Louise, youngest child of Samuel).
1849-1850 – first son Thomas W. died between 23 Nov 1849 when he appears on the Chancery Record and Apr 1850 when his wife Sarah Garetta Elizabeth Ashley dies in Kent, MD, as a widow.
1850 Samuel and MillicentŐs first daughter, Mary Ann, died before this time, as well as the wife of son Thomas W. Elburn, Sarah Garetta Elizabeth Ashley.
1850 census, First District of Kent Co., MD, 20 Aug 1850 of SamuelŐs and MillicentŐs daughter Sarah Elizabeth and her husband John Byron as head of household. Also listed is William Elburn, 23, SarahŐs brother, and Millicent Louisa Elburn, SarahŐs sister. Millicent (SamuelŐs wife) had died 2 years prior.
John Byron, age 40, farmer, b. 1810 in Delaware. He died between 1855-1860.
Sarah E. (Elizabeth) Byron, nee Elburn, age 27, b. 1823, wife of John, born in Delaware. She was the daughter of Samuel Elburn. Sarah Elizabeth Elburn m. John Byron on 19 May 1849 just before this census was taken; therefore, all the Byrons mentioned below are not her children, but probably children of John ByronŐs first wife. Therefore, all these children did not live with Sarah in the 1860 census when John died, but they lived with other relatives.
1851 Jan 11 – Found by Joan Elburn Farley on 6 Apr 2014:
11 Jan 1851 Kent News: TrusteeŐs Sale – all the farm situated in Quaker Neck, in Kent County, known as ŇThomasŐ PurchaseÓ containing 142 Acres being the same farm or which Samuel Elburn, late of Kent County, died seized and since occupied by Edward Elburn. (This is son Edward who married Sarah Ann Hall).
1857 Feb 21 – son Edward died. Found by Joan Elburn Farley on 6 Apr 2014:
21 Feb 1857 Kent News: Died – in Quaker Neck, on Sunday last, Mr. Edward Elburn.
Genealogist Elaine Rodney had previously declared the death date of Edward as 21 Feb 1857, but that was the date the obituary came out in the paper. 21 Feb 1857 was a Saturday, so ŇSunday LastÓ was 15 February 1857.
Joan Elburn Farley believes that SamuelŐs land in Quaker Neck is part of Tract #38. The Colonial Quaker Neck map, Kent County, Maryland, shows the tracts granted by the Lords Baltimore. The 1845 deed from the Elburn family refers to the 142-acre tract as ŇThomasŐ PurchaseÓ, and says it is bordered by the Trew Land, which is indicated as Tract #38 on the Quaker Neck. Millicent and children bought this land from J. B. Eccleston, Trustee for Bartus Trew. For more details, see the Quaker Neck Map.
Samuel would have lived with his mother in the 1790 census as he was only 7 years old.
His father died during the Revolutionary War, and perhaps even before Samuel was born on 11 Jan 1783. Of the ElburnŐs who were in the Revolutionary War, SamuelŐs father had to be alive on 15 Apr 1782. Samuel may have named one of his sons after his father, as we do not know his fatherŐs name. Thomas, Edward, and William were the names of SamuelŐs sons. Samuel named his youngest daughter after his wife, Millicent.
In the Deed of Mortgage Liber JNG 10 Folio 80, received 14 March 1845, Kent, Maryland, it says who owned the land prior to Samuel:
Millicent and children to Thomas Walker, Deed of
Indenture
Thomas Walker, Administrator of John W. Walker, that tract, farm, or plantation
lying or being in Quaker Neck called and known as ŇThomasŐs PurchaseÓ, being
the same land sold by the Honorable John B. Eccleston, Trustee for the sale of
Bartus Trew Real Estate, under a decree of Kent County Court as a Court of
Equity to Samuel Elburn on 26 Sep 1837.
Maryland, Compiled Census and Census Substitutes Index, 1772-1890, shows a Thomas Walker, Kent County, MD, Petitions in 1742.
Thomas Walker (probably Sr.) is listed in the 1830 census of District 1, Kent, MD, age 60-69 which means he was born 1761-1770 and could very well have been the father of Millicent, SamuelŐs wife, but there is absolutely no proof of this.
Thomas Walker (probably Jr.) is listed in the 1850 census of District 3, Kent, MD, birthdate 1794 in MD.

á 2 Sep 1825 Liber TW 4 Folio 669, ThomasŐs Purchase, indenture between Joseph Cox and Bartus Trew.
á 26 Sep 1837, Samuel Elburn bought ThomasŐs Purchase, conveyed by the honorable John B. Eccleston, Trustee for Bartus Trew.
Samuel died in Jan 1839 in Quaker Neck, Kent Co., MD. On 22 Jan 1839 administration letters were granted to John Walker, and SamuelŐs administration bond was file on 22 Jan 1839.

1845 Mar 12 -- Deed of Mortgage, dated March 14, 1845 in Quaker Neck, Kent Co., MD, lists SamuelŐs wife, Millicent, his son Thomas W. and wife Sarah E., son Edward, daughter Mary Ann, and daughter Sarah Elizabeth.

12 March 1845 Deed of Mortgage
Millicent Elbern to Thos. Walker & Others - 142 acre tract in Quaker Neck
formerly sold to Samuel Elbern 26 Sep 1837. Samuel died intestate and estate
descended to Thomas Washington Elbern & Sarah E., his wife; Edward, Mary
Ann, Sarah Elizabeth Elbern and others, his children & heirs at law,
subject to the dower of Millicent Elbern.
1845 Mar 12 -- Deed of Mortgage Millicent Elbern to Thos. Walker. 142 acre tract in Quaker Neck formerly sold to Samuel Elbern 26 Sep 1837, Jng Liber 10 Folio 80. Samuel died intestate and the estate descended to Thomas Washington Elbern (his son – this is one of the only times we see his middle initial W. stands for Washington, p. 82 toward the bottom on the right-hand side just above the signatures) & Sarah E., his wife; Edward, Mary Ann, Sarah Elizabeth Elbern and others, his children and heirs at law, subject to the dower of Millicent Elbern. This Deed of Mortgage states that Thomas W. Elburn was the son of Samuel Elburn and his wife, Millicent. The Deed also reveals siblings of Thomas: Mary Ann Elburn, Edward Elburn who m. Sarah Ann Hall, Sarah Elizabeth Elburn who married John Byron, William Elburn, and Millicent Louisa Elburn who married James R. Chambers. It states
Millicent Elbern to Thos. Walker and others – 142 acre tract in Quaker Neck formerly sold to Samuel Elbern 26 Sep 1837. Samuel died intestate and estate descended to Thomas Washington Elbern and Sarah E., his wife; Edward, Mary Ann, Sarah Elizabeth Elbern and others, his children and heirs at law, subject to the dower of Millicent Elbern.
This Deed of Mortgage between Millicent and children to Thomas Walker does say they were indebted to Thomas Walker for the sum of $348 plus interest, due and payable by 12 March 1849, so they must have indentured the land to Walker thru 12 March 1849 to pay off this debt. Joan Elburn Farley believes that the wording Ňsubject to the lower of MillicentÓ means she is allowed to live there until she dies. After the indenture, they apparently sold it to Henry Archer, and then had to foreclose on the mortgage, as shown by Chancery Papers on 23 Nov 1849.
1849 -- In the 1849 Chancery Papers of Samuel ElburnŐs estate, it refers to the mortgage foreclosure on ThomasŐs Purchase. See #38 on the Quaker Neck Map.
