ELBON -- Durward Dean , 74, of Tulsa, passed away suddenly but peacefully on Sunday, March 11, 2001. He was the son of Oliver and Arlie Elbon and the loving husband of Lola Mae Elbon. Born in Lebanon, OH, August 31, 1926, he graduated from Lebanon High School in 1944. He and Lola married in September of 1946 and have shared 54 wonderful and loving years together. Durward served in the United States Navy from 1944 to 1946 and attended Ohio State University where he graduated in 1949 with a B.S. degree in Business Administration and was member of Beta Alpha Psi. Durward and Lola had 2 children in Ohio before moving to Tulsa in the 1950's to indulge in his lifelong career of Certified Public Accounting. After digging their roots in Tulsa they had 2 more children and became members of First United Methodist Church where they have been active in the Joynor Class ever since. Durward was preceded in death by his parents and 3 brothers. Surviving family are his dear wife, Lola; sons and daughters-in- law, Dean and Jane Elbon, Brett and Sandra Elbon, all of Tulsa; daughters, Nancy Langston of Corpus Christi, TX, Jennifer Elbon- Smith and her husband, Randy of Jenks, OK. Durward is also survived by: his sister, Betty Jean Layer of Tukwila, WA and 8 grandchildren, Mike, Jennifer, Anne, Christa, Brennan, Grace, Dakota and Greer. A funeral service will be held 10 a.m., Wednesday, March 14, 2001 at First United Methodist Church. Graveside committal will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery. Dailey man fights cancer, joins Relay For Life

Editor's note: This is the first in a series of articles designed to highlight local cancer survivors who are taking part in this Saturday's Randolph County Relay For Life.

The pressure to perform at one's job can be a stressor that overtakes all other elements of a chosen profession. For Bob Elbon, a salesman from Dailey, this stress was a part of his everyday life, and until recently he did not know that it would one day contribute to the formation of a cancerous polyp in his lower intestine.

Elbon started out, as a salesman, at the Valley Supply store. His duties there were limited to the sales counter. Despite this limited role, he enjoyed his work and pressed on. Eventually, this lead him to the Kaiser Hardware Co., where he would take up responsibility as a full-time salesman, a considerable step up.

At the time, the Kaiser company was in direct competition with Valley Supply. This head-to-head matchup came to an end after Valley Supply purchased Kaiser in a mutually agreeable arrangement. Elbon was back where he started, but he would not stay there for long. His hard work at Kaiser, now Valley Supply, helped him to branch out even further to the The Home Show.

This West Virginia operation sells manufactured and modular homes, and Elbon was able to take the salesman position for all it was worth, becoming the first person to sell more than $1 million worth of homes in a single year.

Elbon has had his fair share of medical procedures. In 1991 he had a stint placed in his heart and in 1995 he was required to undergo a triple heart bypass.

Heart conditions are a part of his family history, but when doctors began to recommend that he have a colonoscopy, Elbon was not so keen to take their advice. A hardworking, proud man, he felt he was too busy to engage in such procedures. In 2011, however, his doctor insisted and an appointment was made.

During the procedure, a small polyp was found in his colon. In March of 2011, 95 percent of the polyp was removed. The last 5 percent required a specialist.

After researching several doctors, Elbon said he decided to see Dr. Stephen Wiley, in Wheeling, who was able to remove the remaining portion of the cancerous polyp.

Elbon described the entire situation as a "really trying event." He warns everyone to take checkups and screenings seriously, even uncomfortble ones.

"When a person gets to be 45, they need to be checked," he said.

Even through these trying times, Elbon reports that he's in "as good of shape as I have been in 15 years."

His enthusiasm for life now shows up in the Relay For Life, which is a series of events held by the American Cancer Society that helps to provide awareness for and to fight against cancer.

This Saturday, the Randolph County Relay For Life is set for noon at the Elkins High School track. Information on how to participate or support the event is available at relayforlife.org/randolphwv.

Relay events include a race, and are paired with a fundraiser. Elbon helps out by transporting merchandise in his four-wheel drive truck. He volunteered in 2011, and he will be helping out this year, as well.

"I do what I can to help out," says Elbon, who is happy to be giving back to a community that shares a common thread linked to his personal ordeal.
