Children of Montgomery R. Elbon and Margaret Hinkins, 4.2
Both Montgomery and his brother Lorenzo named their first daughter Mary Ann after their daughterÕs grandmother.
5.1 Mary Ann Elbon, b. ca. 1822 in Shenandoah Co., VA, m. Philip Miller on 15 Nov 1841 in Shenandoah Co., VA. Her father was the bondsman.
5.2* George W. Elbon, Sr., b. 29 May 1825 in Shenandoah Co, VA, moved to Warren Co., OH, m. Sarah E. Sherwood, living in 1870 in Washington, Warren Co., OH, d. 29 Apr 1899 in Corwin, Warren Co., OH. He moved to Warren Co., OH, probably because his uncle Jacob Hinkins was living there.
From a biographical sketch of George W. Elbon by W.H. Beers Co., 1882, that appeared in "The History of Warren County Ohio".
GEORGE W. ELBON, farmer, P. O. Oregon; was born in Shenandoah Co, Va., May 29, 1824; he is a son of Montgomery and Margaret (Hinkins) Elbon, who were natives of Virginia. When our subject was 14 years of age, his parents died, and from that on he was compelled to do for himself. In 1849, he came to Warren Co., and in 1856 settled on his present farm, where he has ever since re-sided, pursuing the avocation of farming and stock-raising. He was married Feb. 20, 1855, to Sarah Sherwood, daughter of Henry and Hester Sherwood, born in Washington Township, June 10, 1837. Their three children are as follows: Hester A., born Dec. 5, 1855, Sylvan F., born Aug. 21, 1857; and William H., born Dec. 27, 1864. Mr. Elbon and family are members of the M. E. church. He owns a farm of 126 ½ acres with good improvements. Politically he votes Republican.
Note from Ron Coffman: This can't be entirely accurate, if George's parents died when he was 14 years of age they would have died in 1838. His father, Montgromery was married the second time 1843 and died in 1849 in Shenandoah County. His mother may have died around 1838.
George m. Sarah
Sherwood on 20 Feb 1855 in Warren Co., OH. She was b. 10 Jun 1837 in Warren
Co., OH, dau. of Henry Sherwood and Hester Adaline Jeffery, d. 7 Jul 1925 in

5.4* Montgomery H. Elbon, b. 22 Jan 1828 in Shenandoah Co., VA, m. Lucinda Weeks on 18 Mar 1854 in Warren Co., OH. She was b. 10 Oct 1832 in OH, dau. of John Weeks and Catherine Loucks. They moved to Xenia, OH. Montgomery was a carpenter. He moved to Warren Co., OH, probably because his uncle Jacob Hinkins was living there. Montgomery d. 9 Dec 1890 in TN, and is buried at the Fort Hill Cemetery in Cleveland, TN. Lucinda d. 1915 in Cleveland, TN. Montgomery and Lucinda had 5 children.
In the 1860 census of Jefferson, Greene Co., OH, Montgomery is 30, Lucinda is 26, and they spell their name ÒElbonÓ, living with children Margret 6, Mary 3, Benjamin 2, and Luetta 1/12, all born in Ohio, which indicates they were living in Ohio at least by 1854, probably just after MontgomeryÕs father died. Montgomery registered for the Civil War in Jefferson township at age 35, on 30 June 1863, as a carpenter, stating he was born in Virginia.
In the 1870 census of Madison, Montgomery Co., OH, Montgomery 42 is living with his wife Lucinda 37 and the entire family spells their name ÒElvinÓ. Their children are Magie 15, Mary 13, Benjamin 12, Louell 10, and John 7.
In the 1880 census of Sugar Creek, Greene Co., OH, Montgomery 52, is married to Lucinda 47, and living with their children Benjamin 22, Louella J. 19, and John W. 16.
5.5 John Henry Elbon, b. 31 Jan 1831 in Wardensville, Hardy Co., VA (now WV), d. 16 Dec 1915 in Madison, Montgomery Co., OH, buried at Okmulgee Cemetery, Okmulgee Co., Oklahoma. He moved to Warren Co., OH, probably because his uncle Jacob Hinkins was living there.
He m. Angelina M. ÒLinaÓ Carroll on 10 Feb 1870 in Clinton Co., OH, dau. of Stephens Carroll and Rebecca Shinn. She was b. 1830 in Harrison Co., VA (now West Virginia), dau. of Stephens Carroll and Rebecca Shinn, and d. 8 Oct 1908 in Okmulgee, Okmulgee Co., OK, and is buried at the town cemetery. Evidently they had no children.
John enlisted in Company A, 79th Ohio Infantry on 12 Aug 1862. Received a gunshot wound in the right shoulder (affecting the lung and use of his right arm) at Resaca, Georgia on 15 May 1864. He was left wounded in the hospital at Resada 15 May 1864 through 31 Oct 1864. Then he was in the hospital at Camp Dennison, Ohio until 3 Apr 1865. Honorably discharged 16 Jun 1865. Mustered out on 26 Jun 1865 at Columbus, Ohio. John applied for a disability pension on 19 May 1869.
John is listed in the 1890 Veterans Schedule as living in Wayne, Clinton Co., OH, enlisted in 1862 in Company A, Ohio 79th Infantry Regiment, discharged in 1865 in Columbus, OH, ranked as a Private. He was admitted in 1915 at age 84 to the U.S. National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers in Dayton, Montgomery Co., OH. He died there on 16 Dec 1915, and is buried at the Okmulgee Cemetery in Okmulgee Co., OK.
From the History of the Sago Community, prepared by E. R. Grose, 1926,
published by the Agricultural Extension Division, Morgantown, WV.
The farm known as the Elbon farm was first settled by James Tenney, a soldier of
the Revolutionary War. Later it was sold to a Mr. Boyles, who was the father of
Dunk and Frank Boyles. About 1860 Mr. Granville Marple bought this farm and
lived there for several years. Then he sold the farm and bought another on
Grassy Run, which is now owned by Roy Carter. For years this farm was owned by
Mr. John Elbon, a well-known mechanic. After his death it is still owned by his
family, and the report has it that his son Earl is now the possessor, having
bought out the rights of the other heirs. On this farm is an old graveyard
where many of the old pioneers of Sago and nearby communities are buried.
In the 1870 and 1880 census they lived in Wilson, Clinton Co., OH, living with 3 members of the Carroll family. In 1886 they lived in Mansfield, OH. In the 1890 census they lived in Clinton, OH, and in the 1900 census, in Wayne, Clinton Co., OH. In the 1910 census, John lived alone in Okmulgee Ward 1, Okmulgee Co., OK, as his wife had died. No children.
5.6* James H. Elbon, b. 8 Oct 1835 in Hardy Co., WV, remained in Virginia, d. 20 Oct 1894 in Shenandoah County, Virginia, buried in Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Middletown, Virginia.
He m1. Eliza L. Hansell, 19 Apr 1860 in Frederick County, Virginia, born 20 Feb 1839 in Middletown, Frederick County, Virginia (daughter of Joseph Hansell and Sarah Lemley), died 16 May 1889 in Shenandoah County, Virginia, buried in Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Middletown, Virginia. They had 5 children.
He m2. Harriet (Miller) Hausenfluck, 24 Dec 1890 in Shenandoah County, Virginia, born ca. 1841 in Shenandoah County, Virginia, dau. of Peter and Mary Miller. JamesÕ father, Montgomery, had a brother Lorenzo, whose daughter Mary Ann had a connection to Harriet Miller Hausenfluck (see descendant below). At their marriage, James was 54 and Harriet was 49. Harriet had married previously, m1. Samuel Hausenfluck. Harriet m3. Peter Flanagan on 18 Sep 1899 in Shenandoah Co., VA; she was 60 and he was 65. He is listed in the 1880 census of Opequon (Middletown), Frederick Co., VA, as ÒJames ElbernÓ married to Eliza, and both his parents were born in WV. They are living with 4 daughters: Sarah 17, Mary F. 15, Laura 12, and Ada 10.
1850 census James is living with the family of his uncle, Peter Hinkins.
1880 census of Opequon, Frederick Co., VA,
this same family appears again listed as ÒElbernÓ.
James Elbern, 44, b. 1836 in WV, parents born in WV, farmer
Eliza Elbern, 41, b. 1839 in VA, parents born in WV, wife
Sarah Elbern, 17, b. 1863 in VA, dau.
Mary F. Elbern, 15, b. 1865, dau.
Laura Elbern, 12, b. 1868, dau.
Ada Elbern, 10, b. 1870, dau.
In the 1850 census, James lived in District 58, Shenandoah Co., VA. He was age 15, and as his mother had died, he was living with Peter 32 and Mary A. Hinkins 31. Mary was b. 1819 she was born Mary Ann Marker, not Elbon.
In the 1860 census, James lived in Strasburg, Shenandoah Co., VA with his wife Eliza. Eliza b. 1839 in VA. They m. ca. 1860.
In the 1870 census, James lived in Davis, Shenandoah Co., VA. They were living with children Sarah C., Mary F., and Laura E.
In the 1880 census of Opequon, Frederick Co., VA, James spells his name ÒElbernÓ, was married to Eliza and states that both his parents were born in WV. He was a farmer, 44, living with Eliza 41, and his 4 daughters Sarah Elbern 17, Mary F. Elbern 15, Laura Elbern 12, and Ada Elbern 10, all born in VA.
5.7* Joseph L. Elbon, b. 23 Oct 1840 in Shenandoah Co., VA. Joseph enlisted on 22 Feb 1862 at Front Royal, Virginia in Company B, 17th Infantry Regiment Virginia, he surrendered on 9 Apr 1865 at Appomattox Court House, Virginia.
From Ron Coffman: As far as I know, Reuben Elbon is the only one that may have had any association with Stephens City, VA. Please remember, St. Stephens is nothing more than a church and graveyard and it is not within Stephens City which is north a few miles on Hwy 81 and in Frederick Co., not Shenandoah Co. FindAGrave has that cemetery at Strasburg Junction, this is not correct. A church was erected in the Topnot Community of Shenandoah County (west of Strasburg) and it was called St. Stephens Church. Joseph Elbon (son of Montgomery) and his descendants lived in the Topnot Community and they are the Elbons buried at the St. Stephens Church Cemetery. This St. Stephens is not a community.
Strasburg is
a town in Shenandoah Co., VA, founded in 1761. The Topnot Community of
Shenandoah Co. is west of Strasburg.
Joseph married Lydia Catherine Brubeck, 12 Dec 1867 in Shenandoah County, Virginia, born 12 Apr 1843 in Shenandoah County, Virginia (daughter of Joseph Brubeck and Regina Rosenberger), died 8 Mar 1913 in Shenandoah County, Virginia, buried in St. Stephens Church Cemetery, St. Stephens, Shenandoah County, Virginia. They had 6 children.
Note:
JosephÕs father Montgomery had a brother named Harold who also named his
son Joseph; these two men named Joseph were born only 1 year apart and are
often confused with one another.
In the 1850 census of District 58, Shenandoah Co., VA, Joseph lived with Lydia C. Brobeck who was 7, and with her mother Regina Brobeck, 43, and 8 Brobeck siblings: Elizabeth, John M., Rebecca S., Nancy, Mary A., Regina, Joseph R., and Margaret A. She lived in the same area as the Orndorff family as well as many other German families.
Joseph is listed in the 1860 census of District 8, Frederick Co., VA, age 19, b. 1841, living with 9 members of the Rhodes family.
In the 1870 census, right after Joseph and Lydia married, neither one can be found.
Joseph d. 13 Oct 1888, and is buried at the Saint Stephens Cemetery, Topnot Community of Shenandoah Co., VA, west of the city of Strasburg, VA. Joseph remained in Virginia with his brother James, but his older brothers moved to Warren Co., OH, probably because their uncle Jacob Hinkins was living there.
Children of Lorenzo Dow Elbon and Catherine Copp, 4.3
Lorenzo m. Catherine Copp on 5 Oct 1822 in Shenandoah Co., VA, and d. before 1850, having 8 children. Both Lorenzo and his brother Montgomery named their first daughter Mary Ann after their daughterÕs grandmother.
5.8 Mary Ann Elbon, b. ca. 1824 in Rockingham Co., VA, dau. of Cathrine. Mary Ann m. Samuel Hosenfluke/Hausenfluck on 3 Apr 1845 in Shenandoah Co., VA. Samuel Hosenfluck was b. 1824 in VA, son of John Hausenfluck and Catherine Rolland, and is listed in the 1850 census of District 58, Shenandoah Co., VA, age 26. Mary Ann d. 1848 in Shenandoah Co., VA, perhaps during childbirth with their son John W. Hausenfluck who was b. 14 Feb 1848. Samuel Hausenfluck m2. Harriet Miller on 25 Oct 1849 in Shenandoah Co., VA; Harriet d. 22 May 1913 in Tiffin Co., OH. Samuel Hausenfluck d. 10 Aug 1900.
After Samuel Hausenfluck died on 10 Aug 1900, his second wife Harriett Miller married James H. Elbon, the son of Montgomery above, #5.6.
5.9 Eliza Elbon, b. ca. 1827 in Rockingham Co., VA. She m. William Brown who was b. ca. 1811, and their marriage bond was on 12 Dec 1840 in Rockingham Co., VA. They had 5 children: John Brown, Sarah Brown, Lorenzo Brown, William Montezuma Brown, and Mary Brown.
5.10 John H. Elbon, b. ca. 1828 in VA, m. Margaret
Catherine Kern who was b. 19 Mar 1827 in Frederick Co., VA, dau. of Adam Kern
and Margaret Ritenour, and had daughter Alice R. Elbon. Perhaps Catherine was
sometimes referred to as Catherine and other times as Kate. Catherine, 43, and
Alice 20, are together in the 1870
census of Opequon, Frederick Co., VA, without John, who died just before
the Civil War and before 1860. The 1880
census shows Kate 53 and widowed and Alice 31; Kate states that both of her
parents were born in Virginia. The 1900
census of Shawnee, Frederick Co., VA, refers Kate Elbon as Hattie Elbon, b.
Mar 1827 in VA; she is widowed, age 73, living with daughter Alice, 50.
From the research of L. A. Fravel, Jr. at the Stephens City Historical
Center:
Kern Family Transcript appears to have been written by J. M. or his
sister Inez Virginia Steele. A copy is filed at the end of Miss Grove's
transcripts of the Steele family letters.
Adam Kern, our grandfather was married twice: his first wife was Ellen
Bennett. She had five children, viz: John, James, Joseph, Sallie, and Matilda.
Sallie married Hines and Matilda married Heinzman. By his second wife, Margaret
Ritenour, he had nine children, fiz: Eliza, Zachariah, Nimrod, Marenda,
Philoma, Ephriam, Alcinda, Caroline, and Catherine. Eliza married Mager Steele
of Newtown (Stephens City) and they resided there until their death. Alcinda
married Adam Dean and they now reside near Stephens City, both well advanced in
years. Caroline married James F. Shryock and they lived in Kernstown till their
death. Catherine Kern married John Elbon and they lived in the old home
place in Kernstown till the death of grandmother Kern, then they moved into a
house close by and remained there till they died.
Kernstown is an area within the southern boundary of the Independent City of Winchester, Frederick Co., VA.
Their daughter Alice R. Elbon was b. July 1849 in Frederick Co., VA, d. 1933 in Gaithersburg, MD, and is buried in Mt. Hebron Cemetery, Winchester, VA. Alice was living at the Methodist Home for Aged and Orphans in Gaithersburg, MD, in 1930, unmarried.
Alice Elbin is listed in the 1920 census of Shawnee, Frederick Co., VA, as b. 1850, age 70, single, both parents born in VA, living alone, supposedly born an Elbin. Also in Shawnee in the 1880 census is Kate Elbon (most likely Catherine Elbon), b. 1827, widowed, both parents born in VA, she is 53, living with daughter Alice who is 31, born 1849 who appears to be the same Alice mentioned above. Alice is listed in the 1930 census as ÒAlice R. ElbonÓ living in Gaithersburg, Montgomery Co., MD, single, an inmate, both parents born in VA; she is 81; all the people listed are elderly and it is assumed this was a hospital-care facility. Alice died at age 84 in 1933 and is buried in Winchester, Winchester City, VA, at the Mount Hebron Cemetery. Her stone is surrounded by the Shryock family.
ÒAnÓ M. Catharine Elbon is also buried at the Mount Hebron Cemetery in Winchester, Winchester City, VA, b. 19 Mar 1827, d. 22 Oct 1907, stating she was the wife of John H. or John R. Ulbon.

She d. 1899 and Philip d. 1896 both in Shenandoah Co., VA, and both are buried in the Massanutten Cemetery, Woodstock, VA. They had 6 children: Montezuma D. Boehm, Alice R. Boehm, Davis Boehm, Effie L. Boehm, Virginia Boehm, and Caroline J. Boehm Boehm.
Daughters Effie L. and Caroline are buried at the Massanutten Cemetery in Woodstock, Shenandoah Co., VA. Boehm Family Marker is visible in the Massanutten Cemetery, Woodstock VA. The marker is located in the 3rd row in from the entrance pillars. The entrance pillars are on Benchoff Drive & located behind the Massanutten Military Academy. This is the 2nd entrance to the cemetery when approaching from Main Street (Rt 11).
5.12 Louisa Catherine Elbon, b. 18 Jan 1835 in Shenandoah Co., VA, d. 18 Jan 1857 (age 22) in Shenandoah Co., VA; it seems unfortunate that she died on her birthday. Louisa m. Abraham Keller on 9 Mar 1854. He was b. 10 Oct 1830, the son of John Henry Keller and Dorothy Catherine Stickley. After Louisa died after only 3 years of marriage, Abraham Keller married her sister Caroline as his second wife. Abraham was buried in Old Keller Cemetery, near Mt. Olive, VA. living in Shenandoah County, VA, daughter of David Fetzer and Elizabeth Baker
of Strasburg Junction, Shenandoah Co., VA, married by Levi Keller, Page 9, Line
98. The Fetzer family belonged to a Lutheran Church, Saint Stephens, where they
are buried, and also where 10 members of the ÒElbonÓ family are buried. Mary
Fitzer Elbon was b. 1838 in Shenandoah Co., VA, dau. of David Fetzer and
Elizabeth Baker, and d. 30 Nov 1933, and is buried at the Green Hill Cemetery
in Johnstown, Licking Co., OH. Perhaps William is also buried there, listed as

VA Calvary, enlisting as a Private on the side of the Confederate in 1862. His name is listed as both L. D. Elburn and Lorenzo
D. Elbon. Lorenzo contacted chronic rheumatism on 13 Aug 1861 during the

Apr 1863 of a vulnus sclopeticus wound, which is a wound inflicted by
gunshot, mortal of the bowels. From the
handwritten cards shown below, one can see the difficulty with his name:
Elburn, Elbon, and Albon.
On April 25, 1863, about 1,500 Confederate soldiers under Gen. William ÔÔGrumbleÕÕ Jones, advancing through Greenland Gap, encountered 87 Union soldiers who had taken positions in a church and cabins at the west end of the gap. The Union soldiers held off several assaults, refusing to surrender. After four hours of fighting, the church was set on fire and the Union forces surrendered.
