Children of Thomas James Elbourn and Sarah Elizabeth Kendall, 5.1

There were 14 children born to the marriage of Thomas James and Sarah E. (Kendall) Elbourn. Only 4 grew to adulthood, married and had children. Remaining infants and children died young, some names unknown. (Information provided to Judy Elbourn Curtis by Edith Muriel (Elbourn) Batchelor in 1967). The first 4 children died before the 1900 census.

Note: Joseph Lemuel Elbourn’s wife (of the 5^th generation), Harriet Elizabeth Beck Elbourn, died on 22 Mar 1900 leaving 5 young children in the 6^th generation (Mary Virginia Elbourn, Arraminta Elbourn, Sarah Catherine Elbourn, Joseph Owen Elbourn, and Elijah Washington Elbourn). Joseph Lemuel Elborn’s brother, Thomas James Elbourn (5.1, generation 5) and his wife Sarah Elizabeth Kendall, raised these children along with their already large family of 14; their children were born 1881-1905, and Joseph Lemuel Elbourn’s 5 children were born 1887-1898. This would indicate that many of these children would be living together in the 1910 census, so be aware to differentiate who they are.

Purnell owned a shirt factory, hence the significance of the sewing machine on his gravestone.

The following article is from “The Enterprise” newspaper, Chestertown, Maryland, Page 8, Wednesday, Sept 24, 1930, the year before his son Purnell was born. This was a little over a year after the start of the Great Depression and a little less than a year after the Wall Street Crash. Times were very bad.

The 1940 census of Rock Hall shows him living on Gratitude Road working as a contractor with 7^th grade education; he was 46 years old and Helen was 44, living with children Ruth M. 18 and Jay P. 8. He signed up for the WWII Draft at age 48, 5’ 6”, 145 lbs, blond hair, brown hair, ruddy complexion, signed by Helen Elbourn.

An early letter (1963) to Judy Elbourn Curtis from Muriel Batchelor to Judy’s mom and dad (Pete & Leona Elbourn), has some interesting family remembrances of Muriel who was the wife of John Robert Batchelor, and daughter of Thomas James Elbourn, grandaughter of Lemuel Joseph Elbourn. She states that her grandmother, Sarah Catherine Benton Elbourn, told her Lemuel's people came from England when Lemuel was a small boy.  They settled in what is now called Edesville (then called Forktown) between Rock Hall and Chestertown, Kent County, MD. Muriel's Uncle Joe (Joseph Lemuel Elbourn) and his wife, Harriet Elizabeth Beck,  and their children lived in Piney Neck.  Harriet Elizabeth Beck Elbourn died in 1900 leaving 5 young children.  Muriel's parents raised these children along with their already large family.

6.14* George Washington Elbourn, b. 22 May 1905, Rock Hall, Kent, MD, d. 12 Aug 1970, Baltimore, MD. George is buried at the Wesley Chapel UMC Cemetery in Rock Hall, MD. He worked in a shipping industry between Baltimore, North Carolina, and Philadelphia delivering fertilizer and watermelon. He had a bugeye boat named the P. Jay Elbourn. The Freight Boat Captain “Sarah W. Wingate” was renamed “P. Jay Elbourn” in 1938 when it was sold to P. J. Elbourn and motorized. Wikipedia describes the Bugeye as a type of sailboat developed in the Chesapeake Bay for oyster dredging. On February 15, 1939, while bound from Oxford, Maryland, to Rock Hall with a cargo of oysters, the Elbourn encountered a fog and while feeling her way up the channel to her destination, ran upon a bar and sank. She was later raised and repaired and carried on as a powerboat until she was abandoned in Swan Creek, Rock Hall. She last appeared in 1952 (from Chesapeake Sailing Craft, Recollections of Robert H. Burgess, 2005).

Besides being a shipper, he also worked in a sawmill as a logger.

Grace V. Hardy, 94, died Sept. 21, 2003 at Michael Manor in Douglas. She was the daughter of Charles and Blanche (Hender) Elbourne. At the beginning of World War I in 1914, the Elbourne family moved to Douglas and filed on a homestead 40 miles north of Douglas. At around age six, she attended the West Douglas School, which included all eight grades. Her high school years were spent in Douglas, Shoshoni, Klamath Falls, Ore., and back to Douglas to graduate. Her goal was to be a teacher, and upon graduation in 1926, her grades were good enough to be awarded a teacher's certificate without further training. She applied for the Spracklen school 50 miles northwest of Douglas, and she and her mother moved to that area to a homestead for which her mother applied. She kept a horse in the barn of M. G. "Mick" Hardy at his homestead about a mile away. The two were married June 20, 1928 and purchased an adjoining ranch from Fred and Harry Manning. They made their home there until her husband's death in 1967. Soon after she retired from the ranch and moved to Douglas. Survivors include her son, Gene Hardy and his wife of Douglas; her daughter, Donna Joan (Hardy) Schwenke and her husband of Abilene, Texas; a granddaughter, Michelle (Hardy) Musselman and her husband; two great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Claude Elbourne of Baton Rouge, LA.

6.41 Albert Elbourne, b. ca. 1925, MO, d. ca. 1935 in MO. He may have been named Charles Albert Elbourne Jr., but the 1930 and 1940 census do not list him. He was also not living in 1940 when his brother Robert Leroy Elbourne had died.

6.42 Robert Leroy Elbourne, b. 17 Feb 1928 in Douglas, Converse, WY, and died at age 12 on 14 Nov 1940, right after the census was taken. He was 12 in the 1940 census of Douglas, Converse, WY, and died very shortly afterwards.

Robert LeRoy Elbourne, 12, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Elbourne, passed away at the Douglas hospital Wednesday morning about 2:00 o'clock. Poliomelytis was given as the cause of death. He was buried at the Douglas Park Cemetery in Douglas, Converse, WY.

He has lived all his life in Douglas. He was a bright young student in the 7th grade at the North Grade School. To his schoolmates he was known as "Spoofy.”

Besides his parents he is survived by two half-brothers, Harold Hanes of Cheyenne and Claude Elbourne of Baton Rouge, LA; a half-sister, Lorine Hanes of Seattle, Wash. and an aunt, Mrs. Ora Cotter of Casper.

Burial will be in Douglas Park Cemetery, a burial place made beautiful by the planning and labors of the lost boy's father.
