Children of Reubin Elbin Sr. and Mary Smith, 4.2

His oldest son was John, b. 1807, m. Elizabeth Wolford. This John moved to Licking Co., OH and lived next door to William Elbin, b. ca. 1811. Most likely this William Elbin was related to Reubin. ReubinÕs second son was William, b. 1810, m. Rachael, who appears in the 1840 and 1850 census in Allegany Co., MD.  The 3rd son is H.B. Elbin, b. 1817, m. Juda Fletcher and later Ellen Jane Hinkle and is seen in the 1850 and 1860 Allegany Co. census. In deeds from Allegany Co., MD, ReubenÕs son John Elbin who moved to OH is selling land he owned in MD to his brother William Elbin who still resided in Allegany Co., MD.

5.6* John Elben, 19 Aug 1806 in Flintstone, Allegany Co., MD, d. 6 Mar 1892 in Fallsbury, Licking Co., OH, at age 85 1/2. He appears in Licking Co., OH, in the 1840 census living next to a William Elbin. One of the great finds in genealogy of this line is thru this John. First glance, it's easy to make the assumption this John was William's son, however, I believe he is a John Elbin from Allegany Co., MD. That is supported by a land record from Allegany Co., MD in which a John Elbin "of Licking Co., MD" is deeding his land in Allegany to a William Elbin.

Note: When the family moved to Ohio, all the names were changed to ÒElbenÓ.

Marriage

John m. Elizabeth Wolford, moved to Licking Co., OH. She was b. 1811 in PA, the daughter of Daniel Wolford and Mary Dorscheimer. Daniel Wolford was b. 20 Aug 1780 in VA and probably in Loudoun Co. Mary Dorscheimer was b. 12 May 1776 in Virginia, probably Loudoun Co. Elizabeth Wolford Elbin, d. 8 Nov 1892. There is an Elizabeth Elben listed in the 1870 census of Fallsburg, Licking Co., OH, born ca. 1811 in PA. She is 59 living with John Elben, age 63, and 2 members for the McCarter family, John 20 and William 10.

Census

John is listed in the 1820 census of Falls, Muskingum Co., OH, as born 1810-1820. Muskingum County was formed in 1804.

John appears in the 1840 census in Licking Co., OH, living 3 neighbors away from William Elbin. He is age 30-39, one daughter is age 10-14, and his wife Elizabeth is age 20-29. He is employed in agriculture, probably a farmer.

John appears as ÒJohn ElbanÓ in the 1850 census of Perry, Licking Co., OH, age 43, stating that he was born in Maryland, is living with his wife Elizabeth, age 41, and son George A. Elban, b. 1839 in OH. John is only 2 years older than Elizabeth, whereas other census records show various ages. Living next door is Sarah Elban, 44, the widow of William Elben, with her children Susan 18, Marinda 13, Andrew 16, and Jesse 12, all born in OH. She was Sarah Matthews, the second wife of William Elben who at once was thought to be the father of John, but most likely William was JohnÕs uncle or another close relationship.

The 1850 Enumeration Schedule for Agriculture for John Elben, Licking Co., OH, dated 12 Aug 1850 shows:
60 acres of land improved
20 acres of land not improved
1000 cash value of farm
100 value of farming implements and machinery
2 horses
3 milk cows
2 other cattle
14 sheep
11 swine
175 value of live stock
100 bushels of wheat
200 bushels of Indian corn
90 bushels of oats
50 lbs of wool
12 bushels of Irish potatoes
300 lbs of butter
8 tons of hay
2 bushels of clover seeds
38 lbs of flax
60 value of animals slaughtered

These numbers are quite the average in his neighborhood. I donÕt recognize any other name on the 3-page list of 106 landowners.

John appears as ÒJohn ElbenÓ in the 1860 census of Fallsburg, Licking Co., OH, living with his wife Elizabeth and son John C. Elben, age 11, b. 1849.

John appears in the 1870 census, stating that he was born in Maryland and was living in Fallsburg, Licking Co., OH, with his wife and 2 of the sons of Maza Elben: John C. McCarter and William H. McCarter.

John appears as ÒJohn ElbinÓ in the 1880 census of Fallsburg, Licking Co., OH, he was 73, stating that he was born in Maryland and that his father was born in Delaware and mother in Maryland. He was a farmer, living with his wife Elizabeth Elbin who was 3 years younger than him, age 70, and with his nephew, W. H. McCarter, age 20, b. 1860 whose father was born in VA and mother in MD, and who was a school teacher. The McCarter children were children of Maza Elben, b. 1835 in VA, who m. Jackson McCarter.

Land Deeds

Land deeds from Allegany Co., MD show John Elbin in OH is selling land he owned in MD to William Elbin, his brother, who was still alive for 10 years more, who still resided in MD.

J. Elbin appears in the central south part of Fallsburg on land alongside a river in 1866.

Death

John d. 1892 in Fallsbury, Licking Co., OH, at age 85. and is buried at the Fallsburg Cemetery. Age appears as 85 years, 6 months, 16 days which calculates his birth date as 19 Aug 1806.

ELBIN 19 Apr 1894 Mr. Daniel Wolford, who resides 5 miles east of this city on the Baltimore Pike, MD, wrote a letter to his sister Mrs. John Elbin of Falisburg, OH whom he had not heard from for some time. A few days ago he received a reply that both she and her husband had died. She died Nov 8, 1892 and he died shortly afterwards. Mr. Elbin was 85 years of age and she was 74 years old. Both are from Flintstone, Allegany Co., MD.

The 1882-1901 Licking County, OH, Death Records, Book 2, in Newark, OH, lists John Elben died March 6, 1892, age 85, in Fallsburg township, a farmer.
