HereÕs a video of the steamboat ride from Baltimore to Tolchester in 1960:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BX0fhYYdmW0
How nice that someone took this video as it probably brings back good memories.
Also see the ÒTidewater Maryland, an Embayed Coast PlainÓ Thesis written in 1918 by Walter Lefferts for his PhD. It has a map of the steamboat routes between Baltimore and the Eastern Shore. It also shows the railroad routes and addresses the early road system (or lack thereof) and explains about how people between Chestertown and Rock Hall tended to travel by water rather than by land. ItÕs an interesting little bit of early shore life.

Dining Hall
Services employee retires after 15 years
Tommy Robinson
SheÕs someone who everyone knows by face. In the
morning, she's there to scan your card, and later on, you'll find her at lunch
as well. Her name is Mary Ella Elburn.
Ms. Elburn has been a Washington College employee
for over fifteen years. Originally employed part-time to clean Hynson Lounge, Ms. Elburn was later employed behind the
food counter - the Òfront line,Ó as she calls it. A couple years ago, she was
moved to the computer at the entrance, where she has been ever since.
Ms. Elburn has greatly enjoyed her job. ÒThe
people, the managers, the supervisors and the staff are all real nice,Ó she
said.
But what is it that has kept her working here?
Why has she kept showing up here every morning to take our cards? As Ms. Elburn
simply put it, ÒI just like it here.Ó The biggest perks to her job are the
people she works with and the students. ÒWe all get along so good together,Ó
she said.
It is in part because of this good relationship
with students and staff that Ms. Elburn will be missed, for she is retiring
this May. Ms. Elburn said that she simply felt it was time for her to retire.
Many students were unaware of her impending
retirement. ÒMs. Mary Ella has been nothing but polite. She always says Ôhow
are you today,Õ or something along those lines and is full of smiles. I'm so
sorry to hear that she is retiring - I will miss her,Ó said Leah Singleton, a
sophomore.
ÒI always know [she] will make me smile when I go
to the dining hall,Ó Elena Agapaloglou, a junior,
added, ÒI've got to give her props for putting up with us when we forget our
I.D.Õs.Ó
Ms. Elburn will be leaving with many happy
experiences. She fondly remembers eating meals with her co-workers and having a
good time with them. She also enjoyed when all of her co-workers would get together
one day a year and go up to New Jersey to the casinos. Ms. Elburn recalls,
ÒThat was a nice outing and lots of fun.Ó
Ms. Elburn has greatly enjoyed her time here at
Washington College and will be missed by co-workers and students. ÒIÕve enjoyed
working with all of you,Ó she said.
As Dan Buck-Behney, a
freshman, said, ÒNo matter how early you go in for breakfast, Ms. Mary always
has a smile and a warm ÔGood MorningÕ for you that you would get at home. I
would just like to thank her for her kindness and warmth at meals.Ó
Thank you Ms. Elburn, and have a happy
retirement.
