Fifth Generation

Children of James Elburn Jr. and Elizabeth Hague, 4.1

James m. Elizabeth Hague on 15 Nov 1826 in Kent Co., MD. All of this family moved to Brookville, Franklin Co., IN, Wabash Co., IN, and Miami Co., IN, ca. 1838 as their daughter Hester Ann was born in 1839 in Indiana. (If Lemuel Joseph Elbourn were their son, born 1830, they would have taken him to Indiana with them as he would have only been 8 years old; this proves Lemuel was not their son; that, and the DNA tests donÕt match.) Furthermore, I would suspect James Jr. would not have left home while his mother, Elizabeth Covington, was still alive.

5.1 Amanda M. Elburn, b. 22 Apr 1823 in Kent Co., MD. She m. George Washington Quick on 26 Dec 1846 in Franklin Co., IN, died 8 Mar 1855, and is buried at the Niconza Baptist Church Cemetery in Perry, Miami Co., IN. Could this child have been born 3 years before her parents married? The next child was born 6 years later. George Washington Quick had previously been married to Susan Lines and had one son. He m2. Samuel J. Elburn married Minnie Smith and had 2 sons: Henry and Wilbur Elburn. After SamuelÕs death, Minnie married Labon Confer and had a son William R. Confer. Note the similarity in names between Wilbur and William. Wilbur Elburn adopted the name ÒConferÓ after his motherÕs remarriage. Henry Elburn married Edith Marie Townsend. When Henry died, Edith married his brother Wilbur – or was he the half brother William? In the 1930 census, Edith states she was married only twice – to Henry Elburn and to William Confer, but one of her children by WilburÕs obituary says he was EdithÕs son by a previous marriage and his father was Wilbur Elburn.

Child of George Henry Elburn and Rachel Porter, 4.4

George Henry Elburn and Rachel Porter may have had many more children, but for now George Washington Elburn is the only one with a record of his parents.

Some researchers believe there were 2 men named George Washington Elburn, one the son of George Henry Elburn and Rachel Porter, and the other one listed with the family of James Elburn Sr. and Sarah A.  These researchers believe one GW married Mary Ann Crouch and the other married Mary Virginia Beck. The marriages do not overlap each other, and Mary Ann Crouch died before GW married Mary Virginia Beck. No census records show 2 men with the same name in the same census.

5.13* George Washington Elburn, (called Washington), b. 6 Dec 1830 in Rock Hall, Kent, MD, d. 14 Mar 1899 in Rock Hall, Kent, MD, according to his death certificate which lists his parents as George Henry Elburn and Rachel Porter. This death certificate is the only record weÕre found acknowledging GeorgeÕs parents, as there is no marriage record between George Henry Elburn and Rachel Porter. The Certificate of Death also shows George WashingtonÕs wife as Mary Ann Crouch; however, it appears at his death that he was married to another Mary, Mary Virginia Beck, his second wife, and it was her that outlived him as he was not a widower at death.

Marriages

George m1. Mary Ann Crouch. According to the 1860 census, she was born in 1838. George and Mary had 3 children:

Samuel Washington Elburn, b. 1859, d. 1935 in Rock Hall
George Elburn, 4, b. 1866
William F. Elburn, 2/12, b. 1870

Mary was the daughter of James Crouch. See the 1840 census below regarding James Crouch. James Crouch lived along LangfordÕs Bay, shown in this newspaper article from the Baltimore Patriot on 16 Nov 1830:

George m2. Mary Virginia Beck on 20 Jan 1875 in Edesville, Kent Co., MD, by Rev. George Leary. George Washington was 45 and Mary Virginia was 18; she was born in 1857. They had dau. Anna Maria Elburn, b. 4 Dec 1879 in Edesville, Kent Co., MD, by Rev. George Leary. This is their only child indicated by Joan Elburn Farley. MaryÕs parents were John A. Beck and Sarah Ann Webb who were married on 3 Sep 1840 in Kent Co., MD. Sarah Ann Webb was b. 1824 in Kent, MD, died 1865 in Kent, MD, and John A. Beck was b. 1821 and d. 1880. Four of their seven children married into the Elburn family:

1. Sarah Rebecca Beck b. 1843 m. David C. Elburn.
2. John E. Beck b. 1846, m. Susan Carrie Blackiston 15 Sep 1869; she d. 29 Oct 1871.
3. James Alexander Beck b. Mar 1847, m. Martha Elizabeth Kelley.
4. Elijah Beck b. 1850.
5. Mary Virginia Beck b. 1857 m. George Washington Elburn.
6. Columbus Beck b. Oct 1858 m. Alice M. Elburn, daughter of John Jackson Elburn.
7. Harriett Elizabeth Beck b. Oct 1860 m. Joseph Lemuel Elbourn.

Also, Martha Beck married John R. ÒElbinÓ.

Chronology

1830 Dec 6 – George ÒWashingtonÓ Elburn was born in Rock Hall, MD. He was an oysterman all his life. Birth date was taken from his Death Certificate. There could be another George Washington Elburn born in 1836 – no verification either way.

1832 – Mary Ann Crouch was born in MD, whom George marries later on.

1840 census – District 1, Kent, MD. James Crouch and James Elbern. The only Crouch family in Kent, MD who would fit as the parents of Mary Ann, was James Crouch who was age 50-59 and his wife was age 30-39. James Crouch was not alive in the 1850 census. He is living only a few doors away from James Elbern who is aged between 70 and 80 or born 1760-1770, he being the first known descendant of this line, or the grandfather of George Washington Elburn.

Description: Macintosh HD:Users:Mara:Desktop:Jones.png

1850 census -- George W. was living with his father in District 2, Kent Co., MD, shown as ÒGeorge W. ElbertÓ, age 13, born ca. 1837. This census has many incorrect dates.

1857 – Mary Virginia Beck was born whom George married second.

1857 – About the time that George m. Mary A. Crouch.

1858 Nov – son Samuel Washington Elburn was born in Kent, MD.

1860 census -- George was living with Mary A. Crouch and son Samuel W. Jr., just born, in District 1, Rock Hall, Kent County, MD. Mary was age 22 and therefore born in 1838 in Kent Co., MD. By this census, both of GeorgeÕs grandparents had died. Sarah A. Elburn, who lived with James Elburn Sr. in the 1850 census before James Elburn Sr. died in 1852, was living with WashingtonÕs family in 1860. She has been listed consistently living with James Elburn Sr. in the 1820, 1830, 1840, and 1850 census records; therefore, Sarah A. was a daughter of James Elburn Sr.

David, age 11, is also listed, and he appears in the 1850 census as age 4. Samuel 1, born 1859 is the son of Washington 24 and Mary A. 22. This is the first record where Sarah gives the middle initial ÒA.Ó

1866 – son George Elburn was born in Kent, MD.

1870 census of District 5, Kent Co., MD, spelled ÒElburnÓ.

George Washington Elburn, 36, b. 1834, head of household, oysterman.

Sarah Elburn, 50, b. 1820.

Mary Elburn, 25, b. 1845 – wife of George Washington Elburn.

Martha Elburn, 26, b. 1844.

Henrietta Elburn, 23, b. 1847.

Samuel Washington Elburn, 11, b. 1859 – son of George Washington Elburn and Mary Ann Crouch.

George Elburn, 4, b. 1866 – son of George Washington Elburn and Mary Ann Crouch.

William F. Elburn, 2/12, b. 1870 – son of George Washington Elburn and Mary Ann Crouch.

1870 May 20 – Mary Ann Crouch probably died in childbirth with her son William F. Elburn, or shortly thereafter, as George remarries.

1870 census -- Mary Virginia Beck is in District 5, Kent, MD (same district as George Washington Elburn), age 11, b. 1859 in MD, white, living with her father John A. Beck and her siblings Rebecca M. 24, Columbus 16, Harriet 6, and Harry 3.

1875 Jan 20 – George Washington Elburn m. Mary Virginia Beck in Edesville, Kent, MD. She was age 18. It could be that Sarah A. Elburn died about this time as she was taking care of GeorgeÕs children. George remarried to have someone take care of Samuel age 16, George age 9, and William age 5.

1877 Jan 17 (born), 1879 Dec 4 (baptized) – Daughter Anna Maria Elburn was born in Edesville, Kent, MD, by Rev. George Leary to parents George and Mary V. Elburn.

1880 Census -- Skinner's Neck, Kent, Maryland lists W. Elburn 30, Mollie 20, Annie M. 3. They are living next door to his brother David and his niece Eliza Ann Elburn Kelley. Ages are incorrect. By this census, GeorgeÕs children with Mary Crouch were Samuel 21, George 14, and William 10 – all of whom cannot be found in the 1880 census.

1899 Mar 14 – George Washington Elburn died in Rock Hall, Kent, MD. This document is the only one found so far with any information on it about George Henry Elburn, his wife Rachel Porter, and their son George Washington Elburn. Dropsy is an old term for edema, which is a condition characterized by an excess of watery fluid collecting in the cavities or tissues of the body. Using the Date Calculator, George Washington Elburn died on 14 Mar 1899 at 68 years 3 months and 8 days which calculates to Monday, December 6, 1830. He had married Mary Crouch. Apparently Mary Crouch was still living at this time as the death certificate states that he was married at his death and not a widower. Walter O. Selby, M.D., the doctor who filled out this report, was quite accurate about his responses and even states that George Washington Elburn had no children living. Dr. Selby is in the 1900 census, age 37, born Mar 1862, living in Edesville, Kent, MD. His age and profession indicates the accuracy of this Certificate of Death.

The Death Certificate was reported by Walter O. Selby, M.D. He is listed in the 1910 census of Edesville, Kent, MD, as born in 1866 in MD. He is also listed in the 1920 and 1930 census in the same location. He wrote mistakenly ÒCrouchÓ instead of ÒBeckÓ.

1900 census -- Mary V. Beck is listed in Edesville, Kent, MD, as the widowed aunt of Owen W. Elburn, age 30, b. 1870. Owen was the son of George Washington ElburnÕs brother David Elborn who married Sarah Rebecca Beck, Mary V. BeckÕs sister. Mary was widowed by the 1900 census as George had died in 1899. Also living with them was Sarah E. Elburn, cousin of Mary V. Beck, age 17, born 1883 in MD.

Life of Rev. George Leary

Rev. George Leary transcribed baptisms and marriages in Edesville from 1862 to 1882. Those documents are so important. He was b. 28 Oct 1806 in Georgetown, Kent, MD, and d. 13 Oct 1883 in Edesville, Kent, MD. He got married at ReesÕ Corner. See his obituary. Leary married twice both to a Mary and had 1 daughter.

Children taken care of by Sarah A. Elburn, 4.5

James Elburn Sr. and his wife, Elizabeth Covingdon, had 5 children: Ann, James Jr., Juliann, George Henry, and Sarah A. His wife Elizabeth died ca. 1830.

Very little documentation has been found as to who where the parents of these children. The records that appear could be Òbest guessesÓ by the people who provided the information.

Future research: As I have time to research James Elburn Sr.Õs siblings, who might be John and William, perhaps that research will uncover the parents of these children.

1. Lemuel Joseph Elburn, b. 5 Oct 1830 (as per tombstone) in Piney Neck, Rock Hall, Kent Co., MD. He was not listed in William J. ElburnÕs will as he predeceased him. His descendants have taken a DNA test, which shows that his father was not biologically an Elburn. He was most likely born out of wedlock by Sarah A. Elburn.

*2. George Washington Elburn, b. 6 Dec 1830 in MD, son of George Henry Elburn and Rachel Porter. See 5.13 above. Because Lemuel was born 5 Oct 1830 and George was born 6 Dec 1830 but they live together in the 1850 census, we know that Rachel Porter was the mother of George and probably Sarah A. was the mother of Lemuel out of wedlock. Plus we know that Rachel Porter died before 1850, but she still could have had the rest of these children.

*3. John Andrew Jackson Elburn, b. ca. 1835-36. He was listed in the will of his brother William J. Elburn.

4. Mary V. Elburn, b. 1841. She was not listed in the will of her brother William J. Elburn.

5. Martha Elburn, b. 28 Mar 1842 in Kent, MD. Her death certificate lists her parents as James Elbourn and Sarah Jones. She was 10 years old when James Sr. died. She was not listed in the will of her brother William J. Elburn.

*6. William J. Elburn, b. 1843. Gives to his brothers John and David in his will.

*7. David C. Elburn, b. Mar 1846. He was listed in the will of his brother William J. Elburn. In his Death Certificate, he names his father as ÒunknownÓ and his mother as ÒSarah UnknownÓ, reported by Sarah R. Elburn (wife Sarah R. Beck).

8. Henrietta Elburn, b. 1847. She was 5 years old when James Sr. died. She was not listed in the will of her brother William J. Elburn. Her death certificate lists her father as James Elbourn and her mother as unknown, reported by Harry S. Kelley, son-in-law, husband of daughter Ida Alverta.

*All were brothers according to William J. ElburnÕs Probate in 1883; Lemuel had predeceased William.

5.14* Lemuel Joseph Elbourn, b. 5 Oct 1830 (as per tombstone) in Piney Neck, Rock Hall, Kent Co., MD, d. 14 Oct 1879 in Rock Hall, Kent Co., MD. The father of this child was not James Elburn, however Lemuel lived with the family of James Elburn. DNA tests of his descendants prove he is not biologically an Elburn; we have therefore put him in a special file of his own. See Descendants of Lemuel Joseph Elbourn. Most likely he was a child born out of wedlock by Sarah A. who stayed home with her father, James Elburn Sr., in order to take care of her son. The DNA results show that LemuelÕs biological father may have been a Wright, Jewell, or Grandy.

5.13* George Washington Elburn, b. 6 Dec 1830 in MD, see 5.13 above. Note that his birthday is 2 months after LemuelÕs birthday.

5.15* John Andrew Jackson ÒJackÓ Elburn, b. 1835-36 in Kent Co., MD, d. 28 Apr 1891 after drowning.

Marriage

John m. Eliza M. Grant on 5 Apr 1856 as performed by Dale and listed in the Marriages in Maryland. They had 5 children by the 1880 census of Piney Neck, Kent Co., MD.

Eliza M. Elburn was born on 18 May 1837 in Piney Neckand died on 16 Sep 1926 at 89 years, 3 months, and 28 days in Rock Hall, MD, according to her Death Certificate. She was born in Maryland to John W. Grant and Mary A. Ashley, both of whom were also born in Maryland. The informant on her Death Certificate was her son Walter Elburn of Rock Hall, MD. She died of heart trouble. She was buried on 19 Sep 1926. She outlived her husband by 35 years.

In the 1850 census (only 6 years before Eliza m. John Elburn), Eliza was 14, b. ca. 1836 in MD, lived in District 2, Kent, MD, with her father John W. Grant, 44, and Eliza A. Grant, 45 who may have been JohnÕs sister as Mary A. Ashley is not listed. Children listed are James A. Grant 15, Eliza A. Grant 14, and Richard J. Grant 12. They lived immediately next door to James Elburn Sr. who was 81 at that time.

Land Deeds

JohnÕs land remained in the family and was turned over to various relatives. See details about ÒElburnÕs Lot, 5th Election District, Piney NeckÓ, researched and documented by Joan Elburn Farley on 23 Sep 2014.

John is mentioned in the will of his brother William James Elburn, Kent County Deed Book DCB LIBER 1 FOLIO 396, 1875, 29 May, Richard I. Grant (grandfather) to Eliza M. Elburn, Part of ÒLangfordÕs Neck,Ó 3 acres and 26 Perches.

ÒElburnÕs Lot,Ó 5th Election District, Piney Neck: on 1 Jun 1875 Richard J. Grant and wife Mary Ann [Coleman] Grant deeded a Tract of Land to granddaughter Eliza [Grant] Elburn DCB LIBER 1 FOLIO 396. This land, consisting of 3 acres and 26 perches, was part of a tract commonly called ÒLangfordÕs NeckÓ. This land subsequently passed to:

1)   John Walter Elburn and Mary C. [Leimback] Elburn, ElizaÕs son and the one who was the informant on her death certificate, RRA LIBER 2, FOLIO 525, 19 Dec 1923 (1 1/3 acres of original tract). John Walter died on 23 Nov 1938 and his wife was Catherine Leimback.

2)   Herman Dierker, RAS LIBER 2 FOLIO 636, 4 Feb 1929. [Glenda DierkerÕs grandfather]

3)   Minnie [Dierker] Hynson, daughter of Herman Dierker, RAS LIBER 29 FOLIO 485, 20 July 1942 on this deed, R. Hynson Rogers, attorney, was the duly-appointed trustee of the Kent County Circuit Court in the case of Minnie [Dierker] Hynson, complaintant, and Carrie [Dierker] Fray, defendant. As duly appointed trustee Rogers held the authority to sell the real estate. He held a public auction on the courthouse steps 3 Aug 1938; the land was sold to Minnie Dierker Hynson.

4)   Preston P. Beck, Trustee EHP LIBER 7 FOLIO 235, 7 May 1964. Note: In this last deed the land is referred to as lying in Piney Neck, 5th Election District, known as ÒElburnÕs LotÓ. The tract runs from a stone set on the north side of a private road or right away to the RLW Crouch land, then to the Wm. Coleman land, then to the land of the heirs of James Elburn, then to the Harry Hynson land, back to the Elburn heirs land, then returning to the set stone.

 Chronology

1850 census -- John was living in District 2, Kent Co., MD, with James Elbert (Elburn) 81 and Sarah Elbert (Elburn) 34, and 7 younger children.

1850 census – District 2, Kent Co., MD. John W. Grant 44, Eliza A. Grant 45, James A. Grant 15, Eliza A. Grant 14, Richard J. Grant 12.

1856 Apr 5 – John m. Eliza M. Grant.

1860 census of District 1, Kent Co., MD, as ÒJackson ElbownÓ, age 25, b. ca. 1835 in MD, oysterman, married to Eliza (Grant), age 21 (born 1839), and their children Harriett M. 1 (born 1859), and Eliza A. 3 (born 1857), who was actually Alice M. Elburn. Also living with them is JacksonÕs brother William J. Elburn, 18.

1870 census of District 5, Kent Co., MD.

John Jackson, age 37 (born 1833, a farm hand). His wife Eliza is not in this census, but she is in the next 1880 census and she was in the 1860 census.

Laura, age 23 (born 1847), his wife.

In the 1860 census of District 1, Kent Co., MD, is also a Laura Jones, age 15, born in 1845, close to the date of this female. The names Elburn and Jones need to be sorted out. Also in this 1860 census is David E. Jones, age 14, b. 1846 in MD.

Laura 13 (born 1858), should say 1865 as she is not in the 1860 census. She was actually Sarah Laura Elburn.

Ann 9 (born 1861), was she supposed to be Eliza Ann Elburn who m. Jerome ÒRomie IsaiahÓ Elburn?

John 8 (born 1862), James Isaiah

Richard 4 (born 1866)

James Walter 2 (born 1868), son of John Jackson, he m. Mary Catherine Leimback.

Daughter Harriett is not listed at a time when she would have been 11 (b. 1859). Daughter Eliza A. is also not mentioned at a time when she would have been 13 (b. 1857). Perhaps this census doesnÕt belong here, as in the next 1880 census, Eliza reappears.

1880 census of Piney Neck, Kent Co., MD, John ÒElburnÓ was married to Elizer (should be Eliza Grant), and he states that both his parents were born in Maryland. John was a fisherman.
John Elburn, 48, b. 1832
Eliza Elburn, 45, b. 1835
James Isaiah, 18, born 1862, he never appeared before unless he was John in 1866, fisherman
Sarah L., 15, b. 1865
John W., 13, b. 1867 -- James Walter, m. Mary Catherine Leimback
Bertie 9, b. 1871
Romane 8, b. 1872
Their neighbors were the Crouch, Benton, and Beck families, all of whom married into the Elburn family. Their first daughter Eliza was married in 1876, and the second daughter Harriett born in 1859 must have died as she is also not in the 1870 census.

1891 Apr 1 -- From the Baltimore Sun, Tuesday, April 27, 1891. John drowned on April 1st and his body wasnÕt found until April 27. In the 1900 census, his wife Eliza is listed as a widow. He was about 57 years old and of LangfordÕs Bay.

Description: Macintosh HD:Users:Mara:Desktop:drown.png

William Lloyd Ford was b. 12 Aug 1857 in Grasonville, Queen Anne, MD, and d. 7 Jul 1940 in Milford, Kent, Delaware.

1900 census – Edesville, Kent, MD, Liza (should be Eliza) M. Elburn 57, born in May 1843 (actually, 18 May 1837) in Maryland, widowed. It states both her parents were born in Maryland, that she had 10 children and only 6* were living at this census.

1. Alice M.* m. Columbus Beck
2. Harriett, d. young.
3. James Isaiah*, m. Alice M. Brady
4. Sarah Laura
5. Richard
6. John Walter*
7. Alverta*
8. Romaine*
9. Amanda
10. Eliza Ann*

Eliza had only a boarder living with her in 1900, Lemuel L. W. T. Ross, age 43 or born Jul 1856 in MD. Her neighbors were Beck, Grant, Ashley, Crouch. She was definitely born in May, but various years appear for her birth.

1910 census -- Edesville, Kent Co., MD, Eliza was widowed, age 72, living with a boarder named Lemuel Thomas, age 53. They were living next door to James Isaiah Elburn and his wife Elsie, actually Alice Matilda Brady.

1920 census --

1926 Sep – Eliza Grant Elburn died in Rock Hall, Kent, MD, at 89 years old.

5.16 Mary V. Elburn, b. 1841. She appears only in the 1850 census with her siblings.

5.17 Martha Ann Elburn, b. 28 Mar 1842 in Kent, MD, according to her death certificate, which shows her mother as Sarah Jones (no father listed). Martha d. 19 Dec 1907. It lists her parents as James Elburn and Sarah Jones, and it also says they were both born in Maryland (this information was probably given to the best of the informantÕs knowledge).

Marriage

Martha may have had an earlier marriage to ÒaÓ Jones, as ÒaÓ Martha shows up in the 1860 census (she is not found anywhere else in that census) as Martha Jones in District 2, Kent, MD, and sheÕs 19 or born in 1841 in MD. This might explain why the person who gave the information for MarthaÕs Death Certificate stated Sarah Jones as MarthaÕs mother.

Martha m1. John W. Blackiston on 22 Jan 1864 by Leary from his Journal, in Chestertown, Kent Co., MD, and had 4 children: George W. Blackiston, William Thomas Blackiston, Anna Blackiston, Samuel Lewin Blackiston. Note that Martha took her Elburn name back in the 1880 census after John W. Blackiston died, but her Blackiston children are still listed with the Blackiston name in this census; my interpretation would be misuse of the ditto marks.

Martha m2. William James Joiner on 20 Jun 1883 by Leary from his Journal.      as per the 1900 census, the year her brother William died. William James Joiner d. 23 Dec 1913 and is buried at the Wesley Chapel Cemetery. In the 1870 census of District 5, Kent Co., MD, she lived with her siblings George and Henrietta, and with her biological mother Sarah as her father? James had died. In the 1880 census, Martha was living in Ruthsburg, Queen AnneÕs Co., MD, widowed from John Blackiston, and using her maiden name Elburn. She is living with her brother William J. Elburn, widower, b. 1830, and with WilliamÕs children: Mary M. Elburn 6, Ella J. Elburn 5, William Elburn 12, Romey Elburn 9, plus two children of Martha: Levin S. Blackston 3, and Anna Blackston 6. Looking at the 1900 census of Edesville, Kent Co., MD, 2 siblings married: Romie, b. May 1873 married Ella born Oct 1874 in 1893 stating that both their parents were born in Maryland. Romie and Ella had dau. Virgie L. 7, dau. Relie S. 5, and son Carl 2.

Chronology

1842 Mar 28 -- Martha Ann Elburn was born.

1860 census – Martha may be listed in District 3, Kent, MD, living with the Maxwell family and perhaps married to Charles E. Lewis age 23. She is listed as ÒaÓ Martha A. Lewis age 19. Also living with them is William H. Blackiston age 42 or born in 1818.

1864 -- Martha m1. John W. Blackiston on 22 Jan 1864 by Bates and stated in Marriages in Maryland, in Chestertown, Kent Co., MD, and had 4 children: George W. Blackiston, William Thomas Blackiston, Anna Blackiston, Samuel Lewin Blackiston. John died before the 1870 census. He was b. ca. 1842 in Maryland according to the 1860 census of District 2, Queen AnneÕs, MD, which shows him as age 18 living with Richard F. Meredith 23 and Sallie E. Meredith 20.

1870 census of District 5, Kent Co., MD. Martha is living with various relatives, including her brother George.

1874 – Anna Blackston born, daughter of Martha A. and John Blackiston.

1877 – Levin S. Blackston born, son of Martha A. and John Blackiston.

1878-1779 – John W. Blackiston died.

1880 census, Martha A. (most likely Ann) was living in Ruthsburg, Queen AnneÕs Co., MD, widow of John Blackston, and using her maiden name Elburn. She is listed as age 40, born 1840 (she was born 1842) living with her brother William Elburn, widower, age 50, b. 1830, and with WilliamÕs children: Mary M. Elburn 6, Ella J. Elburn 5, William Elburn 12, Romey Elburn 9, plus two children of Martha: Levin S. Blackston 3, and Anna Blackston 6, listed as WilliamÕs nephews even though Anna was his niece. In this census, both Martha and William state that their father was born in Maryland. Actually, William Henry Elburn was born ca. 1827 and belongs on the line of Samuel Elburn (brother of James Elburn), and has 3 children: Romie b. 28 Jul 1870, Mary M. Elburn b. 1873, and Ella J. Elburn born Oct 1874.

Description: Macintosh HD:Users:Mara:Desktop:1880Wm.png

William, the brother of Martha, appears in the 1880 census of Ruthsburg, Queen AnneÕs, MD, a widower, stating that both her parents were born in Maryland. Martha is age 40, actually born in 1842. Also living with her are WilliamÕs 4 children: Mary M. Elburn 6 (b. 1874), Ella J. Elburn 5 (b. 1875), William Elburn 12 (b. 1868), and Romey Elburn 9 (b. 1871). Also living in this household in 1880 are MarthaÕs children L. Blackston 3 (born 1877) and A. Blackston 6 (born 1974), who were the children of Martha and her deceased husband John W. Blackiston.

5.18* William James (Polk) Elburn, b. 1843 in Kent Co., MD. He died prior to the date that his will was filed which was 10 Apr 1883, age 40, in Queen AnneÕs Co., MD, and had 4 children, daughter Mary most likely predeceased him as she was not mentioned in his will, but the other 3 children were mentioned: Ella, William, Romeo. He mentions brothers John, George, and David in his will.

Marriage

William m. Hannah (or Harriet) Elizabeth Dhue or Dewe or Dew; she died in 1875 when James wrote his will. Her parents were Enoch C. Dhue 1792-1884 and Elizabeth A. Moore 1817-1891. In EnochÕs will of Nov 1870, he left 25 cents to the following children: Eugene, Rachel J. Lant, Hannah E. Elborn, Georgetta Harrington, Enoch (see article below), James M., and Mary E. Baker. The rest of his personal estate he left to his wife Elizabeth and two sons, Andrew J. and John W. when she dies. The Dhue family always lived in Caroline County, MD. Upon further investigation, Hannah Elizabeth Dhue (ca. 1843 MD – before 1880, daughter of Enoch C. Dhue and Elizabeth A. Moore), married William James Polk Elburn, son of James Elburn and Sarah Jones, witness the 1870 census: William 30, Harriett E. 20, William 2, Nancy Bell 12 servant.

The last will of the late Enoch Dew was received on 2 Nov 1889, and he mentions his wife Elizabeth.

Chronology

1843 – William was born in Kent Co., MD.

1850 census -- William is listed in District 2, Kent Co., MD, with his siblings/cousins John, George, Leman, Mary, Henrietta, David, and Martha. He is listed with his middle name Polk, but this middle name is never seen again; in fact, his will uses the middle initial ÒJ.Ó for James. Also living with him in the 1850 census is Sarah, age 34, and James who was b. 1769 in MD. William J. Elburn was probably named after the 11th President of the U.S., James K. Polk, who was president exactly when he was born, from 4 Mar 1845 to 4 Mar 1849. Other children in this Elburn family were named after U.S. Presidents, i.e., George Washington. He was named William James Polk Elburn in only 1 census record.

1860 census -- William was living with his brother Jackson in District 1, Kent Co., MD; William was age 18, name spelled ÒWm ElbownÓ. He was living with his brother Jackson.

1867 – William married Hannah Elizabeth Dhue or Dewe when he was about 24.

1868 – son William Elburn was born in MD, and is listed in his fatherÕs will.

1870 census -- District 5, Kent, MD, William is age 30 or born ca. 1840. He is living with his wife, Harriet E. Elburn (actually Hannah), son William age 2. They were also living with Nancy Bell, age 12, who shows up in the next census as Nancy B. Dew (maiden name of WilliamÕs wife). Harriet/Hannah died before the 1880 census. They were living right next door to WilliamÕs brother John (Jackson) Elburn.

Description: Macintosh HD:Users:Mara:Desktop:AAA.png

1871 – son Romey Elburn was born and is listed in his fatherÕs will.

1874  -- Daughter Mary M. Elburn was born and is not listed in her fatherÕs will as she predeceased him.

1875 – Daughter Ella J. Elburn was born and is listed in her fatherÕs will.

1875 – WilliamÕs wife Hannah Elizabeth Dhue or Dewe died probably during the birth of their last child, Ella J. Elburn.

1875 May 29 -- William wrote his will on 29 May 1875, Kent County Deed Book DCB LIBER 1 FOLIO 396, 1875, 29 May. Because he doesnÕt give to his wife, she probably predeceased him.

1880 census -- Ruthsburg, Queen AnneÕs, MD, William is a widower, stating that both his parents were born in Maryland, and he was engaged in farming. He was born ca. 1830 as he appears as age 50 in this census; however, this date is incorrect. He is living with his widowed sister Martha A. Elburn, age 40. Also living with him are his 4 children: Mary M. Elburn 6 (b. 1874), Ella J. Elburn 5 (b. 1875), William Elburn 12 (b. 1868), and Romey Elburn 9 (b. 1871). Also living in this household in 1880 are his nephew L. Blackston 3 and his niece A. Blackston 6, who were the children of his sister Martha and her deceased husband John W. Blackiston.

WilliamÕs wife, Hannah, was from District 3, Queen AnneÕs, MD, and that might indicate why the family moved to this area after she died. ÒAÓ May E. Dhue was born in this county in 1854. The name was probably spelled Dew as that name was prominent in Maryland at that time, but mostly in Baltimore.

1883 Apr 10 -- In the OrphanÕs Court in the Register of Wills for Queen AnneÕs Co., MD, William is listed as ÒWilliam J. ELBORNÓ, filed 4/10/1883, a total of 88 pages. It mentions John ELBIN, deceased, and that William J. ELBIN was his former administrator. [could John have been his father or uncle?] Witnesses to the estate of their late brother William J. Elborn, dated 10 April 1883, were John Elborn, George Elborn, and David Elborn. Names on the Inventory and Sales list are D. Elborn and J. Elborn. On the Distribution of Personal Estate of William J. Elborn to be divided in thirds are listed his daughter Ella, his son William, and his son Romeo. He does not mention his wifeÕs name and therefore she must have predeceased him.

Note: More research needs to be done on John Elborn whose name has not yet been researched.

5.19* David C. Elburn, b. Mar 1846 in Kent Co., MD, m. Sarah Rebecca Beck on 19 Dec 1867 by Malloy and written in the Kent News on 11 Jan 1868; they were both of Kent, MD. The marriage date is also stated in Marriages in Maryland. He was listed in the will of his brother William J. Elburn. In his Death Certificate, he names his father as ÒunknownÓ and his mother as ÒSarah UnknownÓ, reported by Sarah R. Elburn (wife Sarah R. Beck).

David d. 11 Jul 1918 in Piney Neck, Kent, MD, and buried 13 Jul 1918 at the Wesley Cemetery in Kent, MD. At his death he was married, age 72 (months and days marked ÒunknownÓ), oysterman, March (unknown) 1846 in Kent, MD. Name of father is unknown, maiden name of mother is Sarah (unknown). Both parents were born in Maryland. The death was recorded by Dr. Selby, acknowledged by Sarah R. Elburn, Rock Hall, MD. On back of death certificate, written Òreceived and buried the Wesley of David C. Elburn July #13, 1918 – C. B. ColemanÓ

David C. Elburn is mentioned in the will of his brother William James Polk Elburn.

Sarah Rebecca Beck was b. ca. 1844 in MD, the dau. of John A. Beck and Sarah Ann Webb.

Sarah and family are in the 1880 census as Sarah E. Elburn, wife, and Owen son. Living next to W. Elburn 30, his wife Mollie 20, and daughter Annie M. Mollie may have been Mary Virginia Beck. Both David and W. Elburn were fishermen. Many Beck families live in his area, SkinnerÕs Neck, Kent, MD, enumerated on 11 Jun 1880. There is even a Lemuel Beck. So if Mollie were born in 1860, she should be in the 1870 census. She appears in the 1870 census of District 5, Kent, MD, as Mary V. Beck, 11, b. 1859, dau. of John A. Beck. John A. Beck m. Sarah Ann Comegys on 9 May 1840 in Millington, Kent, MD, the dau. of Samuel L. Comegys and Sarah Ellis. Therefore, their first daughter, Rebecca M. Beck, 24, who lives with the family in the 1870 census, and born in 1846, was from this early marriage. The next child Columbus Beck was born 1854 and he appears in the 1880 census as married stating his spouse is Alice, heÕs a fisherman, and both parents were born in MD. So, the children in this family are Rebecca M. Beck 24, Columbus Beck 16, Mary V. Beck 11, Harriet Beck 6, Harry Beck 3. 27 members of the Beck family, including Alexander, Edward, and Mathew Beck, owned land in the Kent, MD, in 1783, the same time that Reuben Elburn did; there were no other Elburns.

Chronology

1846 Mar – David was born in Kent Co., MD. The problem here is that there seems to be men named David E. and David C.

There seems to be a David E. and a David C., both born ca. 1846 or 1848. David C. Elburn, according to Joan Elburn Farley, was the son of George Henry Elburn and Sarah A. Supposedly, George Henry Elburn was a son of James Elburn, and George Henry Elburn was first married to Rachel Porter and secondly to Sarah A. and her surname was unknown.

1850 – David is listed as David Elbert (entire family is listed as Elbert) in District 2, Kent Co., MD, b. ca. 1846 in MD.

DavidÕs future wife, Sarah R. Beck. Her parents are John and Sarah Beck.
John Beck, 31, white, Blacksmith

1870 census – District 5, Kent, MD.
Daniel (sic) Elburn 22 Oysterman, b. 1848
Sarah Elburn 26,
Oliver Elburn (sic), should be Owen Washington Elburn, born Apr 1870. He died 8 Mar 1948 in Rock Hall, Kent, MD, and was buried on 11 Mar 1948 at the Wesley Cemetery, Kent, MD. He m. Fairrow A. Edwards on 21 Apr 1901 in Piney Neck, Kent, MD.

David C. Elburn, age 52, born Mar 1848 in MD, married to Sarah Rebecca Beck in 1868, married 32 years, father and mother born in Maryland.

Sarah Rebecca Elburn, age 55, wife, white, both parents born in Maryland.

*John T. Beck, age 23, b. 1877, nephew, son of John E. Beck and Rebecker Beck of SkinnerÕs Neck.

*William R. Beck, age 17, b. 1883, brother of John T. Beck.

*These two boys are sons of Martha E. Kelley and James Alexander Beck who m. 3rd Inst by Malloy, Kent News, 12/12/1868. James Alexander Beck was a brother of Sarah Rebecca Beck.

1900 census – Edesville, Kent, MD, Owen W. Elburn, single, age 30, b. 1870, living with his aunt, Mary V. Elburn, who is widowed, age 38, born 1862 in Edesville. Because she is a widow, she was not born an Elburn, but a Beck. Mary Virginia Elburn was married to George Washington Elburn who was the brother of David or the aunt of DavidÕs son Owen. Also living with them is Sarah E. Elburn, cousin, single, age 17, born 1883 in MD, who was born an Elburn. Her father was one of DavidÕs brothers, who could have been Lemuel, John, George, or William Polk.

1900 census -- 5th District of Kent, MD, lists James A. Beck as born Mar 1847 age 53, and Martha E. Kelley as born Jun 1842 age 57; they were married for 29 years or married in 1871 which does not quite align with their marriage date of 3 Dec 1868. James was a farmhand and they could both read, write, and speak English. They had an earlier son, John E. B. Beck, born Jan 1870 and died 5 Sep 1870 in Rees Corner, Kent, MD. MarthaÕs parents may have been Thomas Kelley and Charlotte Martin (this is from someone elseÕs research). Martha died 7 May 1903 at age 60 in Maryland.

1910 census – Edesville, Kent, MD. Beck children are living on their own.
David E. Elburn, 63
Sarah R. Elburn, 66
Their son Owen Washington Elburn, b. 1870, m. Fairrow Edwards, and was living in a separate residence. Her name was spelled sometimes Fairy A. Edwards as she appears in the 1900 census of Edesville, Kent, MD, living with her parents John G. Edwards 51 and Georgeanna Edwards 40; Fairy is 13 or born in Jul 1886.

1918 Jul 11 – David died in Piney Neck, Kent, MD, and buried 13 Jul 1918 at the Wesley Cemetery in Kent, MD.

4.20 Henrietta Elburn, b. 1847* in Kent Co., MD. Her death certificate says her father was James Elburn and her mother was unknown. She died 4 Jan 1918 in Rock Hall and was buried 7 Jan 1918 in Piney Neck Cemetery. Her Death Certificate states she was a widow, age 71, born 1847, died 4 May 1918 at home in Rock Hall, father was James Elburn and mother not known, death recorded by Dr. Seely, info acknowledged by Harry S. Kelley, Rock Hall, her son-in-law. Harry S. Kelley was born May 1862 in MD and lived in Edesville, Kent, MD in the 1900 census, married to Ida A. (Porter) Kelley in 1891. Same data is true in the 1910 and 1920 census. She was 5 years old when James Sr. died. She was not listed in the will of her brother William J. Elburn. Her death certificate lists her father as James Elbourn and her mother as unknown, reported by Harry S. Kelley, son-in-law, husband of daughter Ida Alverta.

*The census records show that Henrietta was born in 1842, 1845, or 1847. Her death certificate says there is no record of the month and day of her birth, but does give the year 1847.

Marriage

Henrietta m. James Alexander Porter (his second marriage) on 27 Dec 1871 in Edesville, Kent Co., MD, by Rev. George Leary. Henrietta listed her mother as Sarah R. Elburn on her marriage license. Her marriage was listed in the Kent News on 6 Jan 1872. James A. Porter died in 1899. Henrietta and James A. Porter had the following children.

Sarah R. Porter, b. 4 Dec 1871 in Kent, MD, appears in the 1880 census of Edesville, Kent, MD (born before marriage). Her marriage license lists her as Sarah Elburn. She m. James Thomas Kelley and they named their first child, a son, James Lemuel. James Thomas Kelley was b. 5 Jun 1860 in Kent, MD, and d. 19 Feb 1934 in Kent, MD, and is buried at the Wesley Chapel Cemetery with Sarah Rebecca Elburn Kelley. They had son William Sterling Kelley, 1891-1969.

Alice M. Porter, b. 1872 in Kent, MD, appears in the 1880 census of Edesville, Kent, MD.

Ida Alverta Porter, b. 1875 in Kent, MD, d. 1947, m. Harry Sylvester Kelley (1864-1928). They had Hilda Kelley, who married Richard M. Klemm of Baltimore. They had daughter Lorraine Meta Klemm.

Larey E. Porter, son, b. 1876 in Kent, MD, appears with his siblings in the 1880 census of Edesville.

James Alexander Porter was b. ca. 1810 in Caroline, MD. One wonders if he were a brother of Rachel Porter who married George Henry Elburn. James Alexander Porter died 1899 in Edesville, MD, parents were Alexander Porter and Sarah Honeycomb who married 18 Apr 1801 in Baltimore, MD. Sarah Honeycomb b. ca. 1780 in Kent, MD, and d. 1863 in Kent, MD.

James was married previously in Baltimore to Mary S. Bennett on 8 Feb 1838 in Baltimore, MD. Mary was b. ca. 1819, d. 1869/70. He brought the following stepchildren into the marriage:

Robert Washington Porter (10 Aug 1840 Caroline Co., MD – 27 Jan 1917 Rock Hall, Kent, MD), married Annie Connelly. Appears as age 19 in the 1860 census.

William James Porter (Jan 1842 Caroline Co., MD – 24 Jul 1911 MD), married Catherine Reed on 31 Jan 1867 in Kent, DE. Appears as age 17 in the 1860 census.

Mary Ann Porter (ca. 1849, MD). Appears as age 10 in the 1860 census.

Chronology

1810-1838 -- James Alexander Porter was born in Caroline County, MD, and was much older than Henrietta by about 37 years. He had married first to Mary S. Bennett on 8 Feb 1838 in Baltimore, MD. They are in Caroline County in two census records as well as the 1840 census where they are in District 4 of Queen Anne County. They had 3 children: Robert Porter, William Porter, and Mary Porter who appear in the 1850 census of District 3, Queen AnneÕs Co., MD, and in the 1860 census of District 1, Caroline Co., MD.

1840 census – This census was taken before Henrietta was born. James Alexander Porter lived in District 4, Queen AnneÕs, MD.

1 male 30-39, James
1 male 50-59, JamesÕ father, Alexander Porter, b. ca. 1790
1 female 20-29, Mary
2 male slaves under 10
1 female salve 10-23

1847 – Henrietta born in Kent Co., MD.

1850 census – District 2, Kent, MD. Henrietta is age 8 (although this should be 3) living with James and Sarah and siblings John A., Geo W., Leman (sic) J. (should be Lemuel J.), Mary V., Wm. Polk, David, and Martha. The family name was spelled ÒElbertÓ.

In this census, James Alexander Porter was living in District 3, Queen AnneÕs, MD, age 37, Mary 40, Robert 9, William James 8, Mary Ann 1.

The 1850 census states she was born in 1842. Henrietta d. 4 Jan 1918 in Rock Hall, m. James Alexander Porter 29 Dec 1871 in Edesville, Kent Co., MD by Rev. George Leary as per his Journal. HenriettaÕs death certificate, as researched by Joan Elburn Farley, states that HenriettaÕs father was James Elburn and her mother is Ònot knownÓ, reported by Harry S. Kelley, son-in-law, husband of HenriettaÕs daughter Ida Alverta Porter. Therefore, Sarah is still not linked as the mother of Henrietta, but because she is the only one in several census records of a reasonable age, she would be considered HenriettaÕs mother. In 1847 when she was born, SarahÕs husband, George Henry Elburn was still possibly living, and he could have been her biological father, but he died before the 1850 census.

1860 census – District 1, Caroline, MD: James Alexander 50, Mary 41, Robert 19, William 17, Mary 10.

1870 census of District 5, Kent Co., MD, Henrietta lived with George (W.) Elburn 30 (son of George Henry Elburn), Sarah 50, Mary 25 (wife of George W.), Martha Elburn 26, Samuel 11, George 4, and William 2/12.

James A. Porter is listed as age 62 in the 1870 census also in District 5, Kent, MD, born in 1808, widower, white, farm-hand, living with his son:

William J. Porter, 28, b. 1842, white, shoemaker
Mary C. Porter, 24, b. 1846, white, keeping house
Mary E. Porter, 2, b. 1868
James W. L. Porter just born in Mar 1870.

James Alexander Porter was born ca. 1810 in Caroline, MD, d. 1899 in Edesville, parents were Alexander Porter and Sarah Honeycomb. Sarah Honeycomb was b. ca. 1780 in Edesville, Kent, MD, and d. 1863 in Edesville. She m. Alexander Porter on 18 Apr 1801 in Baltimore, MD; he was b. ca. 1790 in Caroline Co., MD.

He had married previously on 8 Feb 1838 in Baltimore to Mary S. Bennett (ca. 1819 to 1869/70). He brought the following stepchildren into his second marriage to Henrietta Elburn in 1871, although they were all adults at that time:

Robert Washington Porter (10 Aug 1840 Caroline, MD – 27 Jan 1917 Rock Hall), m. Annie Connelly.
William James Porter (Jan 1842 in Caroline, MD – 24 Jul 1911 MD), m. Mary Catherine Reed on 31 Jan 1867 in Kent, DE.
Mary Ann Porter (ca. 1849 MD).

1871 Dec 4 – Henrietta and JamesÕ daughter, Sarah Rebecca Elburn Porter, was born in Rock Hall, MD, and she d. 21 Oct 1938 in Rock Hall, MD. Sarah (perhaps named after HenriettaÕs mother) m. James Thomas Kelley on 14 Apr 1885 in Piney Neck, Kent, MD. Sarah Elburn KelleyÕs death certificate lists her parents as James Porter and Henrietta Elburn. She was apparently born out of wedlock only 3 weeks before her parents married. On SarahÕs marriage license to James Thomas Kelley (5 Jun 1860-19 Feb 1934), she lists her name as Sarah R. Elburn; she apparently used her motherÕs maiden name although Porter was her biological father. Sarah Rebecca Elburn never used the name Porter, and she was buried as Sarah Rebecca Elburn Kelley, died on 31 Oct 1938 in Rock Hall, Kent, MD, and buried at the Wesley Chapel Cemetery. Her Death Certificate at SkinnerÕs Neck states she had married James Thomas Kelley and that her mother was Henrietta Elbourn and her father was James Porter. She was buried at the Wesley Cemetery on 2 Nov 1938. They had son William Sterling Kelley (20 Dec 1891 in Edesville-Dec 1969 in Rock Hall). Wm S. Kelley was the husband of Marietta Baker (1898-1950) and had children William Leroy Kelley (1919-1985) and Irving Thomas Kelley (1923-1942). Sarah Rebecca Elburn m. James Kelley on 9 Apr 1885 in Kent, MD.

1871 Dec 27 – Henrietta m. James Alexander Porter in Edesville, Kent Co., MD, by Rev. George Leary, and Henrietta listed her mother as Sarah R. Elburn on her marriage license. Listed in the Kent News on 6 Jan 1872.

1872 – Daughter Alice M. Porter was born in Maryland.

1875 Mar 5 – Daughter Ida Alverta Porter was born, died 2 Jul 1947 in Baltimore, m. Harry Sylvester Kelley in Jun 1889 in Kent, MD. Harry was b. 16 Aug 1864 to James W. Kelley and Julia Tall, d 31 Mar 1928. They had children Julia M. Kelley, Wesley S. Kelley, Clarence H. Kelley, Morris L. Kelley, Owen Kelley, John W. Kelley, James Kelley, and Hilda Kelley. Hilda Kelley was b. 27 May 1908, d. Apr 1973, m. Richard Klemm who was b. 17 Sep 1901 in Dresden, Sachsen, Germany and d. 31 Mar 1949, the son of Max J. J. Klemm and Meta Ullrich.

1876 Jun 23 – Son Larey Elborn Porter was born, baptized 18 Sep 1878 in Edesville, MD, by Rev. George Leary, died in 1955, m. Ruth.

1880 census -- James Alexander Porter was exactly twice her age in Edesville (he was 70 and she was 35). James A. Porter was b. in 1810 in MD, and d. 1880-1910. In this census, Henrietta states that her parents were born in MD. James and Henrietta were living with their 4 children: Sarah R. 12, Alice M. 8, Ida L. 7, and Larey E. 4 (he could have been named after Rev. George Leary, as his name is spelled in the 1900 census just after his fatherÕs death and when Leary was married to Ruth. By the 1920 census, Leary was Larry, living with Ruth and 7 children; he is a carpenter and states that both his parents were born in Maryland). In the 1860 census of District 1, Caroline, MD, James A. Porter was 50, born in 1810, married to Mary Porter, b. 1819, and with their children Robert Porter 19, William Porter 17, and Mary Porter 10.

1900 census – HenriettaÕs husband died about this time. She is not listed as living with her daughter as she is in the 1910 census.

1910 census -- of Edesville, Kent Co., MD, Henrietta was living with the Kelley family; Sarah R. Porter Kelley was her daughter. James T. Kelley 56, Sarah J. 40, James L. 21, William S. 18, Melvin W. 15, Walter Roland 13, Snowden 10, Mary S. 8, Grace R. 6, Elmer T. 3, Henrietta Porter 68, mother-in-law, widow.

1918 Jan 4 – Henrietta died of acute indigestion and heart palpitations in Rock Hall, although there was also a flu epidemic in Rock Hall, MD, at that time, which killed other Elburn family members. Henrietta was buried at Piney Neck Cemetery. She was widowed. Although HenriettaÕs death certificate does say mother unknown, Henrietta appears in enough census records with Sarah and with her siblings, Martha and David, whose death certificates say their mother was ÒSarah JonesÓ and Sarah Unknown,Ó respectively. The Informant was Harry Kelley who was HenriettaÕs son-in-law.

Children

Henrietta and James had 4 children, all of whom remained in Maryland. They provide valuable information on the Elburn family.

1. Sarah Rebecca Elburn Porter, b. 4 Dec 1871 Rock Hall, Kent, MD, before her parents were married in Rock Hall, MD. She d. 21 Oct 1938 SkinnerÕs Neck, Rock Hall, Kent, MD, a widow and is buried at the Wesley Cemetery on 2 Nov 1938. She married James Thomas Kelley on 14 Apr 1885 in Piney Neck, Kent, MD (took out a marriage license on 9 Apr 1885), son of William Kelley and Mary Ann. Note: Sarah Elburn KelleyÕs death certificate lists her parents as James Porter and Henrietta Elburn. The Informant was SarahÕs sister, Ida Kelley of Rock Hall, who obviously had the correct answers as they both had the same parents. She was apparently born out of wedlock: she was born 4 Dec and they married 28 Dec.  On her marriage license to Kelley, she lists her name as Sarah R. Elburn; she apparently used her motherÕs maiden name although Porter was her biological father. They had son Roland Russell Kelley, b. 25 Feb 1897 at SkinnerÕs Neck, Rock Hall, MD, d. 9 Apr 1972 at the Elsmere Hospital in Delaware.

2. Alice M. Porter, b. ca. 1872 in MD, appears in the 1880 census of Edesville, Kent, MD.

3. Ida Alverta Porter, b. 5 Mar 1875 in Rock Hall, Kent, MD, d. 2 Jul 1947 in Baltimore, married Harry Sylvester Kelley in Jun 1889 in Kent, MD. Harry (16 Aug 1864-31 Mar 1928, son of James W. Kelley and Julia Tall), who had Hilda Kelley (27 May 1908-Apr 1973), who m. Richard Klemm (of Germany) in Baltimore, MD.
