Description: Macintosh HD:Users:Mara:Pictures:iPhoto Library:Previews:2013:10:14:20131014-195712:DSCN2435.JPG

ÒAnÓ Elizabeth Elbourne shows up in the 1871 census as age 39, a servant, born in Bassingbourn, Cambridgeshire, England, and living in 1871 in Royston, Hertfordshire, England, which indicates the Elbourne families in Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire may be related.

Could this Reuben Selbourn actually be the Reuben Elbon of Virginia? We have never found a birth record for him in Maryland. In the 1810 census, Reuben was b. before 1765; in the 1820 census, Reuben was born before 1773; in the 1830 census, Reuben was born between 1761-1770; therefore, his birth date would be 1761-1765. He had no daughters and he did not name his sons Robert, as the following listing shows that name.

From the Cambridge Record Office.
Selborn/Selb[o]urn
C1766 Feb 24, Reuben Selbourn son of Robert and Mary of Wisbech, St. Peter, Cambridgeshire. No marriage or burial records are listed on findmypast in all England; therefore, he might have migrated to America. Could the name Selbourn have been changed to Elbon?

M1776 Aug 25, Susanna sp otp Selburn m. Joseph bac otp Weaver (surname), witness Richd Hutchesson, Robert Silburn
Reuben Silburn was christened 22 Mar 1822, son of William and Elizabeth. His father was a shoemaker of Timber Market, Wisbech, St. Peter, Cambridgeshire.

bac = bachelor; sp = spinster
I assume the "C" stands for christened and the "M stands for marriage. The ÒotpÓ is a signification for it being official.

From findmypast.co.uk.
Many people with the name Shilborn or Shelborn or Silborn or Selborn lived in Cambridgesure.

ÒAÓ Robert Silburn was christened 9 Sep 1781, son of Robert and Susanna, in Wisbech, St. Peter, Cambridgeshire, and his father was a cordwainer.

ÒAÓ Robert Silburn is listed as christened on 6 Sep 1857 of Market Place, Wisbech, St. Peter, Cambridgeshire, son of Robert and Mary Ann. His father was a shoemaker. He was christened on 6 Sep 1857, but born on 10 Jan 1857.

ÒAÓ Robert Silburn was married in 1817 to Mary Lister, both of Wisbech St. Peter, Cambridgeshire.

ÒAÓ Robert Silburn of Timber Market, Wisbech, St. Peter, Cambridgeshire died 11 Oct 1842 at age 87 according to findmypast. That would mean that he was born in 1755 and perhaps a brother of Reuben above.

Another Robert Silburn died 29 May 1856 of Market Place, Wisbech, St. Peter, Cambridgeshire, at age 46, meaning that he was born in 1810.

Charlotte Selborn, m. Ransome Richard on 9 Jul 1782, Wisbech, St. Peter, Cambridgeshire. Their banns were on 7 Jul 1782.

Susannah Selburn sp otp, banns 28 Jul 1776, with Joseph Weaver bac otp, , Wisbech, St. Peter, Cambridgeshire.

Because one Elbourn DNA test matches the Wright family, I found these entries: Reuben Wright, son of Reuben and Jane Wright, born 8 Mar 1707 in Wisbech, St. Peter Parish, Cambridgeshire. One of these Reubens died 6 Sep 1728 in Wisbech. First Reuben Right married 1693 in Wisbech to Jane Brown. Many women named Hannah Wright in Wisbech.

B.1 Robert Selbourn, married Mary. The name ÒSelbournÓ turns up only once, and therefore, I believe it is an error in spelling.

A.1 Reuben Selbourn, christened 24 Feb 1766 in Wisbech-St. Peter, Cambridge, England, as the son of Robt. Selbourn and Mary. If this were our Reuben and he enlisted in the Rev. War on 16 May 1781, he would have been 15 years old -- was it possible to enter the war that young with parental permission?

Trumpington

Trumpington is the city in Cambridgeshire, England, where members of the Elbourn family lived. It is also a farmhouse near Rock Hall on about 282 acres in Kent Co., 1st District, according to the Assessment of 1783 Kent County – Maryland State Archives, see http://msa.maryland.gov/msa/stagser/s1400/s1437/html/1437ke.html. Reuben Elburn is listed on the same website in the 1st District, p. 5, MSA S 1161-7-1  1/4/5/50. Perhaps look up in Maryland Archives. Also see
http://msa.maryland.gov/megafile/msa/stagsere/se1/se5/028000/028000/028009/pdf/msa_se5_28009.pdf.

William Elborn was baptized in 1714 in Trumpington, Cambridgeshire, England.

James Elburn born 1 Jan 1740 in Trumpington, Cambridgeshire, England, son of William and Elizabeth; the Elborn family is also prominent in Cambridgeshire besides Hertfordshire, but both of these 2 following records show that JamesÕ parents were John and Rebecah. One would assume John was born 1730-1750 and in Hertfordshire, but no record has been found. However, 2 records for a John Elbourn are found in Cambridgeshire, and one is in Trumpington, John Elborn, christened 25 Jul 1739, son of William and Elizabeth. I have noticed Elbons from 1714-1752 appear in Trumpington, Cambridgeshire just NE of Hertfordshire when I searched for Elbourn using the dates 1680-1780, and the names Henry, Anne, Elizabeth, John, Susan, William, and James appear. Then these families progressed SW to the northern towns in Hertfordshire, and continued progressing south through Hertfordshire and perhaps to London where some embarked for America. Nowadays one can understand why Hertfordshire is a desirable place to live as it is a short train ride into London. I plan to visit this area in September 2013 and will report on my findings thereafter. The best website for research in England that I have found is findmypast.co.uk.

Haddenham

The following research is from findmypast.co.uk. The website familysearch.org has similar findings and nothing new.

The Grundy family lived in Haddenham, Cambridgeshire, in the early 1700s. The DNA of the Grundy family has a connection with the Elbourn family as one Elbourn test matches 100% with 4 Grundy tests. Presumedly, a daughter Elbourn had a baseborn son with a Grundy, and that son maintained the surname Elbourn. But, we cannot find any evidence of this situation.

Edward Grundy baptized 31 Jul 1699, son of John and Elizabeth; he died 7 Sep 1699 in Haddenham.

Elizabeth Grundy baptized 23 Oct 1700, dau. of John and Elizabeth. Elizabeth Grundy m. Orwell Peacock on 4 Aug 1720 in Haddenham.

Thomas Grundy baptized 23 May 1703, dau. of John and Elizab. Tho Grundy d. 27 Aug 1703 in Haddenham, or he may be the Thomas Grundy who died 21 Dec 1706 in Haddenham.

Sarah Grundy baptized 11 Oct 1705, dau of Eliz wid.
The family ends here with the death of ElizabethÕs husband John on 5 Mar 1704/5 in Haddenham. No further records have been found for Elizabeth who was a widow with 4 small children. No vital records of any Elbourn can be found in Haddenham.

There was a possibility that the name Grundy could have been Wright. There are no vital records for the name Wright whatsoever in either Hertfordshire or Cambridgeshire.

Bonnie West is the Senior Archive/Library Assistant. She checked the index and did not find any original material naming the Elbons before 1798. The documents showing ÒJohn Elbon, chapman and slop seller, late of WatfordÓ and his wife Ann (dated 1798) have the reference 29736b and 29740.

Bovingdon

Most generations of surnames start with First Generation in America. IÕve numbered the generations in England backwards starting with Generation A.

E.1 Nathaniel Elbon, b. ca. 1677, perhaps in Bovingdon, Hertfordshire, England.

D.1 Mary Elborne, christened 16 May 1697 in Bovingdon, Hertfordshire, England, daughter of Nathaniel Elborne, no mother listed. She married 14 Feb 1722 to John Quarindon in Bovingdon.

D.2 Elyzabeth Elborne, christened 30 Aug 1699 in Bovingdon, Hertfordshire, England, daughter of Nathaniel Elborne, no mother listed.

D.3 Jacob Elbourn, no christening listed but put here by circumstantial evidence. He married Martha Wingfield on 14 Dec 1721 in Bovingdon.

E.2 George Elborne, born ca. 1690, christened 23 Jun 1695 in Bovingdon, Hertfordshire, England.

E.3 Avis Elbourne, born ca. 1693, christened 23 Jun 1695 in Bovingdon, Hertfordshire, England.

E.4 Mary Elbourne, christened 16 May 1697 in Bovingdon, Hertfordshire, England.

E.5 Elyzabeth Elborne, christened 30 Aug 1699 in Bovingdon, Hertfordshire, England.

NOTE: None of the following data has been confirmed whatsoever. If you would like to research these lines, please email marafrench@mindspring.com.

1.2 Nathaniel Elbourn, b. ca. 1694, m. Rose Mayling on 26 Dec 1713 in Saint Stephens, Saint Albans, Hertfordshire, England. ÒAÓ Nathaniel ÒElbondÓ of Sandridge left a will in 1740.

2.1 John ÒEllbonÓ, christened 9 Jan 1714 in Harpenden, Hertfordshire, England as the son of Nathanell Ellbon and Rose. He may be the John Elbon who died 11 Jan 1789 in St. Albanss Abbey, Hertfordshire, England.

2.2 Jonathan Elbon, christened 20 Mar 1716 in Harpenden, Hertfordshire, England, as the son of Nathan and Rose; then they moved to Codicote. He may have been the Jonathan Elborn who died 13 Oct 1782 in St. Albans, St. Peter, Hertfordshire, England.

2.3 Rose Elbourne christened on 13 Dec 1719 in Codicote, Hertfordshire, England, as the dau. of Nathaniel and Rose. No marriage record is listed for her in England; however, a burial record for a Rose Elborn was found on 26 Aug 1765 in Aldenham, Hertfordshire, England, who could have also been her mother.

2.4 Nathaniel Elbourn christened 19 Jul 1722 in Codicote, Hertfordshire, England, as the son of Nathaniel and Rose. He married Hannah Skeg on 1 Jan 1745 at Saint Peter, Saint Albans, Hertfordshire, England. Hannah may have the Hannah Skeggs born in 1728 in Glatton, Huntingdon, England, the dau. of John and Jane Skeggs. Nathaniel died in the Revolutionary War in Kent Co., MD. If Hannah was the widow in the 1790 census of Kent Co., MD, spelling her name ÒElborneÓ, she was living with 3 other females (no ages), 1 male over age 16 and therefore b. before 1774, and 2 males under 16. If Hannah was married in 1745, these children were probably grandchildren. His burial record is not in the Parish Records of England, where it would be had he died there.

3.1 Susan (or Susannah or Susanna) Elborn on 15 Jan 1748 in Saint Peter, Saint Albans, Hertfordshire, England, as the daughter of Nathaniel Elborn, no mother listed. Susan married John Gregory on 15 Sep 1778 in Redbourn, Hertfordshire, England; or . . .  in her hometown she married Mathew Brickland on 24 Aug 1782 in Saint Peter, Saint Albans, Hertfordshire, England, or . . . she married James George on 7 Oct 1804 in Saint Peter, Saint Albans, Hertfordshire, England. In any case, she did not immigrate to Maryland.

Harpenden Families:

The National Archives in London

Time-effective Research at TNA takes a lot of advance planning. But with a Readers Card (usually 3 years validity) you can order up to 18? files/documents in advance so that they are ready for you when you arrive.

First organise your card (free). Top floor office. You need photo ID (passport) and proof of residence eg Utility Bill, driving license. They photo you & give you a card immediately. This is the key to ordering everything. You cannot enter the restricted Reading Rooms without a Readers card. (You may find some of the files you want in the open areas but usually these are just Indexes to the Reading Room original docs). You load the card with some cash to operate scanners etc--25p a scan.

Then order up to 3 items using the card on the PCs there. You select a seat number & the files are put in an open locker with that number--they take about 45 minutes to arrive--have a coffee/sandwich in the cafe! You have to deposit most things in the ground-floor lockers before you can enter the Reading Rooms. Usually you can only take one file in at a time. There are scanners & you can take a camera in.

This will give you a good idea of what the files look like and how the system works. Then back home review your other research and decide which TNA files need to be examined. Then either hire/find someone to do it for you or wait till your next trip--if you can be patient!

I'm at the national archives in London .... Huge place. What I've learned so far is that men in England were trained for wars by regiment, not battalion, so you need to know the regiment. They started with the first regiment, and so on. When they needed more soldiers to replace those who died, they sent over the next trained group, or the second regiment where Mathew and Nathaniel were, indicating as we already know that they were among the older Elbourns. The recruited men were enlisted from Maryland itself, and therefore were probably born in Maryland and definitely not sent over from England. Theses include Reuben and William whom I surmise were brothers. More soon after I get the material I ordered.

British Army Service Records
1760-1915
Includes Royal Hospital Chelsea Pension Records – none for the Elbourns
Regiments were started ca. 1775 to protect England from France. Regiments of all eligible men were trained and sent over more troops as necessary to fill in for those who died. They started with the 1st Regiment, and so on.  Mathew and Nathanial Elbon were in the 2nd Regiment. William Elburn Sr. was a Corporal in the 3rd Regiment. John Elbin/Elvin was in the 6th Regiment. Reuben and William were Kent Co. Recruits and not in a Regiment, which means they were recruited from Maryland and not from England.

T47/10 shows an amazing list of emigrants leaving from London Port and from Dover, and gives the county they were from, their occupation, the quality of their life, and their age. No Elbourn for 1774-1776. Did not have time to search other books. This register is kekpt by port customs officials of emigrants going from England, Wales, and Scotland.

WO10, WO12, and WO13 – Commissary General of Musters Office and Successors: Artillery Muster Books and Pay Lists gives dates of enlistment, movements throughout the world, and discharge. 1 Jan 1708 thru 31 Dec 1878, for the Army, marriage, divorces, children. Shows British Army in North America.

WO12/348, 3rd Regiment of Horse. Could not find any Corp. William Elbourne.

WO12/293, 2nd Regiment of Horse in which Matthew and Nathaniel were in.
Documents from 1 Jan 1772 to 31 Dec 1788 Army, could not find anything.

WO12/3029, 13th Foot, 1st Battalion, 1 Jan 1773-31 Dec 1785. Nothing.

WO12/6471, 55th Foot, 1st Battalion, 1759-1877 sub-series, text date 1774-1785. Dated Philadelphia 16 Mar 1778. John Elbourne was listed as Òon dutyÓ; therefore, he was not a prisoner of war, not sick nor dead. This certificate was effective for the whole time during this muster. 20 men were present at the end, 20 were absent, and there were 2 casualties. First record of John Elbourne shows as enlisted 25 Jun 1777 (I took 3+ photos). His MajestryÕs 55th Regiment of Foot commanded by Major General James Grant, commission dated from 16 Nov 1777. No other Elbourne. When they mustered in, there were 2 Sergeants, 2 Corporals, and 20 effective Private men. Muster was taken for 183 days commencing 25 Jun 1777 and ending 24 Dec of the following year (1778). By 16 Mar 1778 John Elbourne was in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. John was officially on duty from 4 May 1778 to 21 Jul 1778. He was mustered in for 182 days from 25 Dec 1777 to 24 Jun 1778, both days inclusive. He mustered out at Staten Island, New York on 21 Jul 1778. These books are VERY heavy and large. I looked thru many books and hundreds of pages and found ONLY John.

From records in America (not from TNA), John Elbin/Elvin enlisted in the Revolutionary War on 2 Jun 1778 in Maryland. This date does not coincide with the other dates, even though it is close, plus the name Elbourne and Elbin are quite different. But, these could be men of different generations. Plus, John Elbourne was in the 55th Foot and John Elbin was in the 6th Regiment and mustered in on 2 Jun 1778 in Maryland and mustered out on 14 Mar 1779. John Elbin appears in the 1783 Tax List of Maryland in Cecil County. For details see John in the 55th Regiment of Foot in Canada.
