My theory is that there were three Elbin brothers descended (not sure how many generations) from the John Elbin who appears on the Ark & Dove passenger list from 1634 - John, Reuben and William. John's children tended to stay in the Bedford Co.,PA/Allegany Co., MD area, and currently spell it ELBIN. Reuben's line migrated to current day WV and descendants there insist the spelling is ELBON. Your husband's William migrated to Licking Co., OH and many of them consistently spell it ELBEN. At least that's what I have found, unscientifically.

My ggg grandmother was Mary (Elbin?) Waggoner (bc 1799-dc 1874) who married Elza Waggoner (1799-1840Õs), probably in Allegany Co., MD. They moved to Fayette Co., PA between 1833-1835. Elza most likely died in the 1840Õs and widow Mary moved with her children to Greene Co., PA where she lived on the property of John T. Elbin. I believe he was her nephew and his grandfather was John Elbin, Sr. I believe that was MaryÕs father, but havenÕt been able to prove it. They, along with Elizabeth Elbin Chaney (husband Ezekiel Chaney) are all buried in the Windy Gap Church Cemetery in Aleppo Twp., Greene Co., PA.

Those buried in the Windy Gap Cemetery, see http://www.interment.net/data/us/pa/greene/windy/index.htm.
Elbin, Hannah, b. 3 Jul 1827, d. 21 Feb 1907, w/o John T.

Elbin, John T., b. 18 Mar 1824, d. 22 Jan 1907, s/w Hannah

Elbin, Mary A., d. 31 Jul 1875, Aged 20y 7m 27d, d/o J.T. & H.
Chaney, Elizabeth, b. 30 Aug 1808, d. 30 May 1881

Chaney, Ezekiel, d. 28 Apr 1877, Aged ?y ?m 5d

I have not come across many others researching this surname, and looks like I get to be the first to post here.... I'm trying to distinguish between the two John ELBINs in the late 1790's/early 1800's, one in Allegany Co., MD, the other in Bedford Co., PA. I know that one of them fought in the Rev. War. There is a John T. ELBIN, born in 1824 in Allegany Co., MD, who was orphaned and went to live with his grandfather, John ELBIN, in Greene Co., PA. He resided there until his death in 1907. Does anyone know how he fits in with the others? Where was this grandfather prior to 1840? He must've been one of those in either Bedford or Allegany??? Don't know. Also, there's a Reuben ELBIN in Flintstone, MD from 1820 through at least 1840. He could possibly be my gggg grandfather, but I have yet to determine where/how he fits in with these other ELBINs. I do know he had at least two sons - William and Henry B. Then, there appears to be another Henry B. ELBIN in Bedford Co., PA. What's up with that? A clue to the linkage between all of these ELBINs? Does anyone know the origin of the town of Elbinsville, PA? Awhile back, can't remember where, I read a comment that the ELBINs "died out". Was there some catastrophe or did they simply not have a lot of children to carry on the name? There certainly are not many of them around today as well.

I'm picking up this line again...has anyone been able to find out more info on Nathaniel? Who were his siblings? Anything on his parents? I believe my ggg grandmother was Mary Elbin, bc 1800 in MD. (She married Oliver Waggoner - working on his line, too) Her father, probably one of the John Elbins, maybe Nathaniel's brother (?,) moved to Greene Co., PA in the 1820's. I also believe Mary's sister may have been Elizabeth Elbin Chaney, who married Ezekiel Chaney. They are all buried in the Windy Gap Cemetery in Greene Co. I'd love any help on these folks. Thanks!

There is a tintype photo of two young men wearing aprons, dating probably around the late 1870's, of which I have a high res scan. I believe they may be Elbins...possibly Henry and John W. from Greene Co., PA, also of Cameron, WV. I would love to be able to positively identify these guys...please contact me if you have any info that might help. Thanks. Email: susanking@carolina.rr.com (email good in 2009).

I have a photo of an Ella Elbin that I found in Barnesville, OH, who I believe was probably a daughter of John W. Elbin who resided in Barnesville, OH in the early 1900's. The photo was taken around 1911 and was sent to her "Grandma" in West Virginia. Don't know how, but it ended up in a yard sale. I would love to be able to return the photo to a direct descendant. Please contact me if anyone knows anything about this family. Thanks. [From the FFA: no, she is not a daughter of John W. Elbin, but a daughter of Willis and Sophia Elben].

Let me throw something your way as well to get your opinionÉ  All of these Elbins IÕve worked on in Allegany, Co., MD, Bedford Co., PA, Greene Co., PA, we may get an Elben or Elbon spelling or such on various documents, but not usually an EBLEN/EBLIN, with the ÒLÓ and ÒBÓ transposed. When I was looking at a deed of John ElbinÕs in Allegany Co., finally called ÒElbinÕs Third AttemptÓ because it took three times to finally get it recordedÉdonÕt know whyÉ, when I looked not at any transcription or index regarding it, but the original from the Maryland Archives, it ready plainly John EBLIN. Every page, every time the same. It was clearly intentional. Then, it said he was from Loudoun Co., VA, which I found particularly interesting because I had thought maybe my Waggoner connection went over from Frederick Co., MD to neighboring Loudoun Co., VA to get married. So, when I started poking around Loudoun, I realized that there were no Elbins there, but a large family of Eblins who had been there since about 1767! I donÕt know what to make of it. If the person buying the land in Allegany Co. was an Eblin, then was that a totally separate family from the Elbin clan? At first, I thought it was just written incorrectly on the deed itself, which of course happens all the time, and the indexer and transcribers fixed it. But now, it looks as if thatÕs not the case. Were the Elbins and Eblins related and the names just got mixed up when branches went their separate ways? ThatÕs where y-DNA could help.

Is Henry B. Elbin who married Juda Fletcher in Allegany County, MD - the same Henry B. Elbin who later married Ellen Jane Hinkle?

Found a photo of a Henry Elbin who had a second wife "Jennie", but can't tell if the female photo is his first or second wife. I need to know more about this family and would like to talk to anyone who may be able to help with the photo identification.

The caption on the back of the female photo says:

ÒGreat Uncle Henry ElbinÕs / First Wife / gave aunt Raechel the old / coverlet, about 1870 / Cumberland, Md. / Aunt Jenny – his second wifeÓ

These photos are in Greene County, PA. There was an Elbin family in Greene County that descended from John Thomas Elbin (born 18 March 1824 in Allegany Co., MD) & Hannah McVay. John's grandfather was John Elbin, but I do not know his parents' names. The Henry in the photos may have been his brother.

I found a couple that may match Henry & Jennie in the 1880 Census:

Henry B. Elbin household, 1880 U.S. census, population schedule, Flintstone, Allegany County, Maryland, ED 3, SD 3, page 40C (stamped)/31 (written), dwelling 272, family 288; National Archives microfilm publication T9, roll 493.

Elbin: Henry B. 63 retail grocer MD MD MD, Jennie 40 wife keeping house MD MD VA

This Census info fits with the 1870 Census I found for Henry & Juda:

H. B. Elbin household, 1870 U.S. census, population schedule, District 9, Allegany County, Maryland, Flintstone post office, page 286 (stamped)/32 (written), dwelling 224, family 233; National Archives microfilm publication M593, roll 567.

Elbin: H. B. carpenter (Value of real estate-$2000) (Value of personal estate-$1200) MD, Juda 62 keeping house PA, HARBST: Dora 16 domestic MD (father & mother of foreign birth)

Would sincerely appreciate any input and would enjoy exchanging with any relatives. Email: candicelynnb@yahoo.com (email good in 2005).

Photograph believed to be of Henry Elbin's first wife, Judith (Fletcher) Elbin - daughter of Philip Fletcher & Mary Sullivan of Flintstone, Allegany County, Maryland. Handwritten inscription on back of photo reads, "Great Uncle Henry ElbinÕs / First Wife / gave aunt Raechel the old / coverlet, about 1870 / Cumberland, Md. / Aunt Jenny - his second wife." Original, professional photograph, no photographer listed. Efforts to date the photo place it in the late 1860s or early 1870s, at which time Henry Elbin was still married to his first wife Judith (Fletcher) Elbin, who lived circa 1807-circa 1876. David Fletcher, researching the Fletcher-Elbin genealogy, and Susan King, researching the Elbin-Wag(g)oner genealogy, participated in making this identification by providing extensive genealogical research and a photo comparison for this family. Archived at the Greene County Historical Society (918 Rolling Meadows Road, P.O. Box 127; Waynesburg, Pennsylvania 15370). Researched and digitized for the Greene Connections: Greene County, Pennsylvania Photo Archives Project between 2005-2011.

[3] Mindie Kaplan: I'm looking for information on this family:

Mary ELBIN was born to Frank Elbin and Sarah (nee FINGER) around 1899 in Newark, New Jersey.

Mary married Abraham D. LITSKY (born June 23, 1892 in Waterbury, Connecticut to David Litsky of Russia and Pauline BAERMOERRN / BERMAN of Russia) on Jan 21, 1923 in Waterbury, Connecticut.

They had at least two children. One was a son named Franklyn Lloyd LITSKY who married Arlene FRIEDLANDER in Connecticut on July 31, 1955 (daughter of William FRIEDLANDER and sister of Heather FRIEDLANDER).

In the 1930 census, Mary's mother Sarah ELBIN (65) was living with her daughter Sally (32) in Waterbury, Connecticut. Sally was also born in New Jersey.

Any information would be greatly appreciated. Email: rayvenna@his.com (email good in 2004).

[4] John Elbon appears in the Bridgewater, Somerset Co., NJ Tax List of 1795.

[6] Darlene Nordbert Cannon: I have found my Elben ancestor's name spelled all 3 different ways. William Turpin Elben was born in Salem Co. NJ, the son of William Elben, (born in MD) and Mary Ann Turpin b. in Alloways, Salem Co., NJ. Wm. Turpin Elben moved to the Eastern shore of MD married, and operated a Mill in the Chapel Dist. of Talbot Co. He fought in the Civil War. He and Georgeanna both died in Baltimore, MD.(Georgeanna's obit spells it Elbon) Wm. Turpin Elben's sister, Anna Louisa Elben married Thomas Paley Stuard from Penn. They and her widowed mother, Mary Ann Turpin Elben were living in NY city at the 1880 census. I have found a William Elbon and Reubon Elbon listed on the Kent County , MD. Muster rolls for the Continental Army in 1781. I just this week received a copy of a William Elben's will dated 1803 from the Salem Co., NJ archives. It names his pregnant wife as Rebecca and mentions sons but no names. In the will, it is spelled both Elben and Elbin. Do you think all of these Elbon, Elben, Elbins from NJ, MD and PA somehow link up????? I am very much interested in anything you might have found. Email: darlincee@yahoo.com (email good in 2003).

There is a Sarah Elben, b. 1795 in NJ, living in the 1850 census of Salem, Salem Co., NJ, probably with her son, William C. Elben, who is 25, b. 1825 in NJ. In the 1860 census of Salem, William C. Elben is living with Sarah A. Elben, age 4, b. 1856 in Salem. In the 1870 census of Upper Pittsgrove, Salem Co., NJ, Sarah, b. 1856, is age 14 and living with the Smith family.  [7] Daniel Elbon: My gggg grandfather is Reubin Elbon. Kent County MD militia, 1781. His son was Harold R. Elbon, who was a Southern sympathizer. He died in a Union prison camp in 1863 in either Delaware or NJ. I think it's in NJ, but he did something that the Union did not like and ended up in their prison My great great grandfather is William Anderson Elbon, (a sergeant in the 41st Virginia Cavalry) who raised my grandfather, Lester Elbon. If anyone wants to know anything about anyone in the Elbon family, contact me at nobel61854@hotmail.com (email good in 2012). Daniel states in email from Sep 2012 that his ÒElbonÓ surname is Irish with some interesting history in England, such as the Elbon Hotel at 17 St. Chads Road, South Shore, in Blackpool, England, which is a landmark.

[8] Joan Elburn Farley: I AM RESEARCHING THE NAME "ELBURN" OF KENT COUNTY MARYLAND AND HAVE HIT A BRICK WALL WITH THOMAS ELBURN CIRCA 1810. KENT COUNTY MD HAS MANY SPELLINGS OF THE NAME - ELBURN, ELBOURN, ELBOURNE, ETC. ONE OF MY GREAT GRANFATHER'S CENSUS RECORDS EVEN APPEARED AS "WILLIAM SAMUEL ELBAM." I AM NOW WONDERING IF THERE MIGHT BE A LINK TO THE ELBIN/ELBON/ELBEN SURNAMES. SINCE "ELBURN" SEEMS TO DISAPPEAR, I THINK IT "EVOLVED" FROM ANOTHER SURNAME! ANYONE HAVING ANY INFO TO SHARE OR IDEAS Email: farleyje@va.metrocast.net (good in 2012).

HELLO MARA! (dated 27 Aug 2012)

JOAN ELBURN FARLEY HERE FROM KING GEORGE, VIRGINIA – FORMERLY OF CHESTERTOWN, KENT COUNTY, MARYLAND.

SINCE I POSTED THAT MESSAGE, I HAVE UNCOVERED THE PARENTS OF THOMAS W. ELBURN AND – POSSIBLY – A LINK TO THE REUBEN ELBON OF KENT, MARYLAND.

A DEED OF MORTGAGE DATED 12 MARCH 1845 (JNG LIBER 10 FOLIO 80) STATES THAT THOMAS W. ELBURN WAS THE SON OF A SAMUEL ELBURN AND HIS WIFE, MILLICENT. THE DEED ALSO REVEALS SIBLINGS OF THOMAS: MARY ANN ELBURN; EDWARD ELBURN WHO MARRIED SARAH ANN HALL; SARAH ELIZABETH ELBURN WHO MARRIED JOHN BYRON; WILLIAM ELBURN; AND MILLICENT LOUISA ELBURN WHO MARRIED JAMES R. CHAMBERS.

BOOK JNG 10 PAGE 80:

12 MARCH 1845 DEED OF MORTGAGE

MILLICENT ELBERN TO THOS. WALKER AND OTHERS – 142 ACRE TRACT IN QUAKER NECK FORMERLY SOLD TO SAMUEL ELBERN 26 SEP 1837. SAMUEL DIED INTESTATE AND ESTATE DESCENDED TO THOMAS WASHINGTON ELBERN & SARAH E., HIS WIFE; EDWARD, MARY ANN, SARAH ELIZABETH ELBERN AND OTHERS, HIS CHILDREN AND HEIRS AT LAW, SUBJECT TO THE DOWER OF MILLICENT ELBERN.

SAMUEL WAS BORN 15 JAN 1783 IN KENT, MD AND DIED IN JAN 1837 IN QUAKER NECK, KENT, MD. IT IS HIGHLY SUSPECTED THAT SAMUEL WAS THE SON OF REUBEN AND HANNAH ELBURN/ELBORNE. IN APRIL 1794, SAMUEL, ORPHANED AT AGE 11, IS PLACED WITH NICHOLAS RILEY UNTIL AGE 21. OUR RESEARCH HAS LED US TO BELIEVE THAT SAMUEL IS EITHER THE SON OF SARAH ELBOURNE (1790 CENSUS PG 81 UPPER DISTRICT) OR OF HANNAH ELBORNE (1790 CENSUS PG 83 MIDDLE DISTRICT – LANGFORD BAY). HANNAH, BEING THE WIFE OF REUBEN (REF 1783 TAX LIST LANGFORD BAY) SEEMS THE MOST LIKELY CHOICE.

ON 22 OCT 1811, SAMUEL IS A WITNESS TO THE WILL OF CHARLES GROOME.

1830 CENSUS – 2ND DIST KENT CO. MD AGE 40-50
M 40-50    SAMUEL B. 1783, AGE 47

ON 22 JAN 1839 – ADMINISTRATION LETTERS ARE GRANTED TO JOHN WALKER R.E. PROCEEDINGS OF THE COURT 1837-1847

I BELIEVE REUBEN ELBURN WAS BORN ABT 1745 AND DIED 1784-1790. HE MARRIED HANNAH ABOUT 1762.

[10] James Johnson: My G Grandmother was Matilda Elbin, born 22, May 1834, in Bedford Co, Pa. She was married to Benjamin Johnson, born 1829 or 1832 in PA. They had eight children, five born in Alleghany, Md. and three born in Southhampton and Mann Twp in Bedford Co Pa. Children: SARAH 1854, Effie 1856, Nancy 1858, JOHN 1860, Lucy 1862, Elmira 1868 in Pa, Anson 3 Dec. 1867, (my grandfather), Elizabeth 1873. Elbinsville is still a town, (not much) we visited it, at the New Hope Church in Elbinsville, Matilda's dad, Nathaniel is buried there, plus a lot of other Elbins. Nathaniel was married to Nancy Moore. Their children are: Otho 22 Oct 1827, George 1830, Elizabeth 1832, MATILDA 22 May, 1834, Mary 1838, Sophia 1840, Sarah Ann 1852. The 1850 census indicated that Nancy was raising the children alone, so appearantly Nathaniel had died. We hit a bit of a wall with Nathaniel, if this gets the train on the track maybe we can locate more of these folks. Contact us directly at JIMnJOYCE@AOL.com (email good in 2002).

[11] Jeanne Diehl Stiffler: I am trying to connect my Himes with Johnson and Elbin. I have a photo of Kerrenhappuch Johnson Elbin born 20 Aug 1829 and died 24 Jan 1928. She is buried in the Mt. Hope Christian Church Cemetery and I believe part of the Elbins of Elbinville. The back of the photo says "Aunt Happy". Apparently she was a Johnson and married an Elbin, the Johnsons married some Himes. Any help?? Email: jlstiff@aol.com (email good in 2007).

[27] James Elburn, b. 1804. Line of Reuben Elbon of Virginia. Listed in the 1820 census of Columbia Furnace, Shenandoah Co., VA, with his parents. He was 16-25, b. 1795-1804. He was not listed in the 1830 census with his parents. Our assumption is that he had died and his wife, Elizabeth, was living with her father-in-law in the 1830 census as a female is listed in that census aged 20-29, b. 1801-1810, but is not in the 1820 census; therefore, she could not be a daughter, but a daughter-in-law, with the surname Elburn. James m. Elizabeth Rorer who was b. 1806 in VA.

Listed in the 1840 census of Shenandoah Co., VA, spelled his name ÒElbonÓ with a family of 4: James had died before 1830, but his wife Elizabeth Rover, was living with his parents.
1 male 10-14, b. 1826-1830, James H. Elbon, age 10, son of James and Elizabeth.
1 male 50-59, cannot read and write, William (father), b. 1781-1790
1 female 30-39, cannot read and write, Elizabeth Rover, b. 1801-1810
1 female 50-59, cannot read and write, Catherine Rover (step-mother), b. 1781-1790

Listed in the 1850 census of District 58, Shenandoah Co., VA. Both William and Catharine (his second wife) were 62, Elizabeth Rorer was 40, and also living with them was William Elbon, age 12, b. 1848. All names were spelled ÒElbonÓ on the ancestry.com index, but they also appear as ÒElbenÓ (see below). Elizabeth Rorer was b. 1810, but in other census records she was born in 1806. Rorer is indexed as Rover.

In the 1870 census, Catherine ÒElburnÓ was widowed (second wife of William), in Davis near Edinburg, Shenandoah Co., VA, age 84, living with her daughter-in-law Elizabeth Elburn (b. 1806 in VA, age 64), both of whom could not write, but they could read. Also living with them in 1870 was ElizabethÕs son, James H. Elburn, 35 (born 1835), his wife Eliza 31 (born 1839), and their children Sarah C. Elburn 8, Mary J. Elburn 5, and Louiza E. Elburn 3. Also listed are various families: Coburn, Bauserman, Piefer, Suan, Bird, Dett, Whitington. All members of the Elburn family were born in VA.

[30] Nicholas L. Holton traveled in the same path as William Elben who migrated to Licking Co., OH, and because Nicholas was born in NJ and moved to PA, and then to the same county in Ohio as William did, and then Nicholas bought land in Ohio from Adam Dush whose daughter Margaret Dush married William Elben, it makes one wonder if William's father had come from NJ. [But after a lot of research, we find WilliamÕs father was from Maryland].

Nicholas was b. 20 Nov 1774 in Gloucester, NJ.  He was the son of James Holton/Holeton/Haltom, b. 1745, and was in the Rev. War. Nicholas Linmeyer Holton m. [33] From Bob Cawly on 4 Jul 2008: Just a quick search in several of my Maryland books, I find Ruebin Elbon, William Elbon, John Elbourne, William Elbourne, Sr, and William Elbourne, Jr in Revolutionary Patriots of Kent & Queen Anne's Counties, Maryland on pages 84 & 85. Earliest listing is for John 1775. Also, find an Elizabeth Elburn in Colonial Families of the Eastern Shore on page 275 where she is listed in 1770 with an Andrew Miller as having a base born child. There is an Elben Mills noted in The History of Caroline County, Maryland, From Its Beginning, 1920, pp. 289-298. Kent County was the first part of Maryland settled by Lord Baltimore....the Elben's from Maryland most likely came directly to Kent County or Philadelphia......and came through the Delaware water gap.....Given this timeframe, pre-revolutionary Maryland, most likely English if they came to Kent County. and I would bet the Elben's were German, Dutch or Scandinavian if they came in through Philadelphia.

[37] John Elbin, elbin@comcast.net.

Hi Folks,

I just got back to working on this line after an absence of 3-4 years and started by trying to pull together all the scattered info I had on a very confusing search (the early Elbins had a hard time thinking up male names, most of them being called John, William and Reubin). The following is what I think the relationships are between these early Elbins. This scenario is contrived, based on some facts and some conjecture, but it all seems to fit with census data and other info I've picked up on the internet, and hopefully it might give some structure to this search. I start with John Elburn in the 1800 Pa census, listed (on Ancestry) as being from Beaver co., but I'm fairly certain it should have been Bedford Co. I believe this is the same person as John Elvin (1810 census) and John Elben (1820) census both in Southampton Township. (This may sound like a stretch, saying that 3 people whose last names are different are the same person, I'll assure you it's not. It is rare that somebody gets my name right unless I spell it for them) The 3 males (sons) listed in the census (I think) were John, Reubin and Nathanial.

(1) I'll start with the youngest son Nathaniel (b.1790-1800) who I'm fairly certain is my GGGgrandfather, married to Nancy Morse with 2 known sons, George and my GG Otho (or Otha or Othy as my uncle called him).( I've got the info on descendants but I for now want to stick with the earlier ones.)

(2)The middle son was Reubin (b. 1780, (m. Mary ?), found in the 1820, 1830,1840 and 1850 census in Allegany Co. Md. His oldest son I think was John (b.1807 and m. Elizabeth Wolford). This is the John who moved to Licking Co.,Ohio and appears there in the 1840 census living next to a William Elbin (More about him later). The second son was William (b.1810 m. Rachael ?) who appears in the 1840 and 1850 census in Allegany Co. with a bunch of kids. The third son I think was H.B. (born 1817 m. Juda Fletcher and later Ellen Jane Hinkle) seen in the 1850 and 1860 Allegany Co. census.

(3) The third son was John (b.1770-75). He's in the Allegany Co census of 1810 and 1820 and I'm fairly certain this is the same John that shows up In Greene Co. in the 1840 census. I believe his daughters were Elizabeth (b. 1810, m. Ezekiel Chaney) who has also moved to Greene Co in 1840; and Mary b.1809 in Greene Co, m. Waggoner) who is living next to him in 1840 in Greene Co. I think he had one son named John. He's the John in the 1830 Allegany Co. census. This census indicates he had three sons. I think one was John and the other 2? (one could be the H.B. I attributed to Ruebin I suppose). The John of the 1830 census is nowhere to be found in later years. I suspect he died, leaving young John an orphan who then travels to Greene Co. to live with his grandfather and appears a the teenager in the 1840 census.

One last thing. I mentioned a William Elbin living in Licking Co. Ohio. This William is almost certainly related to the Pa and Md Elbins. He names his kids William (who in turn names his kids John and Rufus) and Reubin. He was born in 1770 in Pa. and I really think he is the first son of the John Elburn I that I started with. He doesn't appear in the 1800 census possibly because he is 30 years old and had already left home. If this is the case the John (b1807) who moved to Licking Co. moved next door to his uncle.

Please if anyone has any information that supports or refutes this scenario, please post it. John Elbin

She gave valuable information for Elbourn descendants thru her Aunt Pearl who she visited in 2009 in Skinners Neck. Pearl got out her family Bibles: one of them belonged to her mother, Mary Tina Virginia Elburn Hinefelt, and the other one belonged to her mother, Alice Matilda Brady Elburn. She married Barry Watson Adkins. They live at 8814 Cumberland St., Chestertown, MD, 410-810-2822. FrancesÕ parents were William Herbert Batchelor, b. 1912, and Helen Frances Elbourn, b. 1919. FrancesÕ fatherÕs brother was Purnell Theodore Batchelor, b. 1927 and he m. Pearl Lena Heinfelt of SkinnerÕs Neck. PearlÕs mother was Mary Tina Virginia Hinefelt whose parents were James Isaiah Elburn, b. 1862 and Alice Matilda Brady. James I. Elburn and Alice M. Brady had son Leroy Elburn who m. Harriet Higgons. These lines belong to James Elburn, b. 1769 and Lemuel Elbourn, b. 1830.

[42] William Alban or Alben or Albin or Albon is listed 15 times in the Pennsylvania Tax and Exoneration List of 1768-1801. Dates are 1783, 1787, 1789, 1788, 1785 -- most dates say 1783. Location is Rostraver, Westmoreland County, PA. He had 150 acres of land, 2 cabins, 2 horses, 3 horned cattle, 5 sheep, valued at £105, with a total of 8 white inhabitants, no blacks.

This is the most accurate early information I have on William Elben showing the original records, all in Rostraver. The taxes of these years are very consistent and it appears to be the same person, but spelling of the name is 4 times Alban, 2 times Alben, and 4 times Albin, and 5 times Albon. I would assume this William about 30-40 years old in 1785, therefore born about 1745-1755, but this is only a guess. I did find a listing of a William Albon born 1750 in Pennsylvania.

Earlier than this I find a Gerhardt and Lorentz Aalbahn in Philadelphia County, PA in 1754.

Later than this I find William Albin on 24 Mar 1829 in Mercer, Pennsylvania on a land warrant.

Here's more information indicating that he lived first in Virginia and then moved to Rostraver and then to Kentucky, which to me doesn't seem like the correct line, as the Elben family moved to Licking County, OH.

William Bruce Albin's middle name came from his mother Mary Bruce.

His father William is shown on a land survey next to John Shepler in Frederick Co., Virginia. About 1772 John Shepler's three sons moved to Rostraver Twp., Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania. Mathias Shepler sold about 160 acres to William Albin, spelled Albon, on the 1785 land survey and in the 1790 census.

William sold his land to John Shepler in 1790 or 1791 and moved to Nelson County, Kentucky.

William's wife was one of three daughters of John Shepler of Frederick Co., Virginia.

William and Malinda Magdalena Shepler had these children: William, George, Mary, John, James, Isaac, Absolom, Sarah, Phillip, and joshua. William's father was also William, born 1710 in Leinster, Meath, Ireland, and died 2 Jun 1765 in Winchester, Frederick Co., VA. Going back even further, the family came from Derbyshire, England.

William born 1746, died 1796.

William served in the Revolutionary War between 1777 and 1783. He was an Ensign with the Rangers of the Frontier from Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, Capt. John VanMeterÕs 3rd Co, 4th Battalion. He also served also in Capt. Andrew RabbÕs Co. in 1778. Sources diverge considerably on his date and place of death. Testimony in a lawsuit in the 1820s indicates that he died on recently purchased land in Nelson County. He was buried in Provident Cemetery, Greencastle, Putnam County, Indiana.

[43] ELBURN, Sandra Kay, age 65, died on Sunday, December 13, 2009 at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury. Born in Baltimore, she was the daughter of the late Robert Simmont and Mary Jarrell Simmont. Ms. Elburn worked as a Registered Nurse in the home health care system and at health facilities across the Delmarva Peninsula. She enjoyed traveling and especially enjoyed visiting her son in Spain, traveling across country by car with another son, and taking cruises with friends. She enjoyed visiting New York and loved Broadway shows. She was a member of Buckingham Presbyterian Church in Berlin, MD where she was a member of the choir, helped in the organization of events, and had been working toward becoming a Lay Pastor. In her free time she loved to sew, mostly Pennsylvania Dutch style quilts, and was an avid reader. Christmas was her favorite time of year. Sandra was an independent woman, sensitive and caring about everyone she touched: She was a healer of body and soul. She is survived by the three sons she cherished above all else: Robert Eugene Elburn of Waynesboro, PA, Frederick Owen Elburn of Las Palmas, Spain, and Michael John Elburn of Zullinger, PA; her nieces, Serena Janovsky and Debbie Dundore; her friend and sister in life, Judy Maurer of Berlin, MD; her good friend Patricia Shepherd of Showell, MD; and many other nieces, nephews and a number of grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, December 18, 2009 at 11:00 A.M. at Buckingham Presbyterian Church, 20 South Main Street, Berlin, MD 21811. Rev. Dr. Kay Myers will officiate. Friends may call on Thursday evening from 6:00 to 9:00 P.M. at the Burbage Funeral Home, 108 William Street, Berlin, MD 21811. Interment will be on Saturday, December 19, 2009 at 1:00 P.M. at Maple Grove Cemetery, RD 3, Hunlocks Creek, Pikes Creek, PA 18621. Published in Baltimore Sun on Dec. 16, 2009.

[56] The Sturtevant father and son were born Elben, but adopted by the Sturtevant family and never used the name Elben. It is fine to keep them as Sturtevant on the website. I've just been talking to several Elbons of Virginia connected to Reuben Elben. The family married into the Bly family, which is German, and most of the people in Strasburg, VA, are German, and so Charles Elbon of that line feels 100% sure that he is German. His photo on FaceBook sure looks British. Anyway, he said they used to have an Elbon Reunion, but the Bly family is much more active, and now the Elbons go to the Bly Reunion in June, he believes. Daniel Bly has been researching the Bly family since his teens and he is now 70. I talked with him and he says the Elbon family is definitely not German, but that they came from Kent Co., England. I had thought they came from Dorset Co., England. Anyway, he gave me Ronny Kaufmann's telephone number in Los Angeles who has done tons of work on the Elbon family of Virginia

[65] Mary ELBIN was born to Frank Elbin and Sarah (nee FINGER) around 1899 in Newark, New Jersey.

[69] Joseph Lipscomb, email: tgc205@comcast.net, email good in 2009.

He had son Harley Elbon, line of Joe Lipscomb, lived in the 1850 census in Rockingham, VA, Private, C. S. A. 51st Virginia Militia, Company A. He d. 13 Oct 1888 and is buried at St. Stephens Cemetery, Strasburg Junction, Shenandoah Co, VA. He m. Lydia C. Brubeck. JosephÕs father Harold had a brother named Lorenzo who also named his son Joseph; these two men named Joseph were born a year apart. This Joseph lived in Strasburg, VA, early on and then moved to Randolph, WV. Joe Lipscomb, tgc205@comcast.net, 503 692 2899, Tualatin Oregon

Joseph could have been the son of William and Catherine Copp as Joseph was only 9 years old in the 1850 census of District 58, Shenandoah Co., VA, when his mother died and he was living with John 53 and Susanna Hinkins 47; the Hinkins family were the in-laws of Montgomery R. Elbon, JosephÕs father. Susanna Elbon was b. in 1803 and may have been born an Elbon or married an Elbon. John and Susanna Hinkens (perhaps Elbon) are listed in the 1860 census in Strasburg, Shenandoah Co., VA, with Mary Corner, age 70, b. 1790 in VA.

Also in the 1850 census of District 58, Shenandoah Co., VA, lived Lydia C. Brobeck who was 7, living with her mother Regina Brobeck, 43, and 8 Brobeck siblings: Elizabeth, John M., Rebecca S., Nancy, Mary A., Regina, Joseph R., and Margaret A. She lived in the same area as the Orndorff family as well as many other German families.

Joseph is listed in the 1860 census of District 8, Frederick Co., VA, age 19, b. 1841, living with 9 members of the Rhodes family.

In the 1870 census, right after Joseph and Lydia married, neither one can be found.

I have quite a bit of information on the Elbon family from WV.

[73] Rebecca Hall was b. ca. 1759 and d. 9 Sep 1835 in Salem Co., NJ, at age 76. She was married to Clement Hall. Clement was b. 13 Nov 1758 in Salem Co., NJ, the son of Clement Hall and Margaret Morris. Clement Hall Sr. was b. 15 Dec 1723 in Salem and d. 1768 in Elinsboro, Salem Co., NJ, at age 45. The Hall family appears on the 1849 map of Eisenborough, Salem Co., NJ. Clement Hall Jr. is listed on the Tax Lists of Salem in 1779, 1783, 1784, 1785, 1788, 1789, 1793, 1795, 1796, and 1860. The Hall family was very dominant in early Elsinboro days. Rebecca Hall was most likely first married to William Elben as ÒAÓ William Elben of a later generation, who married Mary Ann Turpin, named their first born son Clement (Clem) B. Elben who was born in 1839.

Most likely Rebecca remarried after William died in 1803 as all their children were minors. Finding her may give us more clues about William and the names of their children. We are looking for women named Rebecca listed as born ca. 1775 and living in NJ, and probably remarried in 1804. ÒAÓ Rebecca Elbin is listed as marrying Job Ridgway on 13 Dec 1819 in Salem, NJ. Job Ridgway was b. in 1797 in Philadelphia and d. 13 Mar 1877 in Philadelphia at age 80. He was a widowed carpenter. This report does lead us to believe that this William had a daughter named Rebecca after his wife. Also listed in this church record on the same 1877 page is listed Ruth Anna Alben (age 58) and Lizzia Albin (age 29). The church is the FriendsÕ Fair Hill Burial Ground Records in Philadelphia on Germantown Ave. and Cambria St.

[90] Research involving Hugh Elbert: Thomas Elsbury was born in 1684 and baptized 18 Feb 1684 in Whiteparish, Wiltshire County, England. He was married 25 May 1708 in Fisherton Anger, Lavertock, Bemerton, he was a bachelor, carpenter, from Wiltshire County, age 24, married Anne Croame, age 25, spinster, from Wiltshire. Oddly enough it says he died Nov 1723 which is exactly the date of the land grant at Dogwood Ridge in Queen Anne Co., MD. It says he was burred at Thorley, Hampshire, England and that his fatherÕs name was also Thomas. But this must have been an earlier Elsbury as the Wiltshire Thomas Elsbury married in 1732 to Ann Pierce, so, unless the one in Maryland returned to England???, this record is not the right person.

Patented Certificate 1723/10/10 of Dogwood Ridge, Thomas Elsbury, 100 acres. See Original provided by Joan Elburn Farley. Dogwood Ridge was in Queen Anne County, Maryland. Other names on this document include Edward E. Hall or Hull and Peter Cook.

[107] Jo-An Reiblich, email: jreiblich@me.com,

Hi, I just received your message about researching your husband's family tree, and yes, I would love to be included in your research.  My husband's biological surname was Elbourn, but he and his two older brothers were adopted by their mother's second husband and took his last name.  My husband has 4 half siblings, younger than him living in Virginia, Northern Neck area and they don't have much information to share with me.  I do know they were from Maryland and lived in the Baltimore area in the 1950's when my husband was born, but not much more than that.

Any information you can share would be appreciated.

[114] William Albin in Frederick Co., VA in 1745. William's parents are James Albin and Sarah Cansey. William marries Mary Bruce and has children John, Robert, George, and James between 1742 and 1753. Mary's father John was from Stephensburg, Frederick Co., VA.

Excerpts from The Virginia Albins:

Ò The first record of William Albin found in Frederick County, however, was in 1745, when he declared himself a titheable. Alexander Ross declared himself and his sons the same year and Ross is believed to have been there in the early 1730Õs. This appears to be the earliest record of titheables in Frederick Co. although individuals had made oath previously in Orange Co. Apparently Frederick Co. was just getting organized after it was formed from Orange Co. The land records indicate that William Albin applied for warrants for a total of one thousand seventy-eight acres from Fairfax, just north of Red Bud, and west of the Opeckon. But from whom he made his original purchase, before Fairfax entered the picture about 1748, we have found no record. Cartmell hints that these settlers probably purchased from one of Jost HiteÕs sons. . . . William Albin, like many of his neighbors and Quaker friends, paid his filing fees to obtain warrants from Fairfax. . . . After they had paid for and received their warrants, they next had to have a new survey made, which meant more expense. It was little wonder that money was so scarce in that period of ten or fifteen years after Fairfax came into the county, that neighbor was filing suit against neighbor for unpaid debts. The first plot for which Albin obtained a warrant (copy missing) was for four hundred acres on Red Bud Run, joining  Hugh Parrell. He sold this warrant to Thomas Sperry/Perry, who had it surveyed on March 14, 1750/1. The second warrant was dated February 15, 1752, for 200 acres, which he sold to James Agen/Hagen, who in turn sold it to George Meret, who had it surveyed on March 26, 1754. The survey showed 239 acres. The third plot was for two hundred fifty-six acres, lying just northeast of the first. This warrant, dated March 27, 1753, he sold to Earnest Andrews, who had it surveyed on March 26, 1754. These plots surrounded on three sides the 189 acres that William Albin kept for himself. So out of the original purchase, he retained only 189 acres. The warrant was dated September 21, 1751, and the survey was done on November 24, 1752. . . .

Ò The old court minutes contain some interesting entries which tell us something about William Albin, but they are sketchy. They are listed here in sequence to give a somewhat incomplete picture of his life and times.

Ò 16 Feb. 1751. For examination of Robert Bird on suspicion of feloniously murdering his own child - Witnesses were William Albin, Charles Burns, Thomas Wyat, Stephen Russell and Ann Burns.  Court says not guilty.

Ò In October of 1751, William Albin co-signed a note for William Taylor. This note, signed with his unique mark, which he also used in other documents, so apparently did not read or write. It appears that William Taylor had purchased from a merchant some buckram and thread, and sundry items, had signed a note, co-signed by William Albin. The bond was almost twice the amount of the debt. One wonders why William was willing to co-sign this note. When the note came due, Taylor was not to be found and others were in court trying to collect against him. This left William Albin liable for the debt. He filed a plea before the court and it recorded as follows: 14th Feb 1752 'William Albin vs William Taylor on attachment, this suit ordered dismissed, neither party appearing.'  (7) Suit was called twice again, on the 3rd of June and on the 4th of June, with the same order. Taylor owed him 10 pounds, current money, and had absconded and could not be prosecuted. On July 7th, the same year, Taylor was an insolvent debtor in the ÔgoalÕ (jail), on a suit brought by John Sherman for debt. Taylor took the oath of insolvent debtor, and it is ordered that the sheriff discharge him from goal. With Taylor out of reach of the court, Cocks then filed suit against William Albin: 'Fryday the 9th day of March 1753. William Cocks agt William Taylor and William Albin, defts. On petition. The sheriff having returned that he had left a copy of the summons at the deft AlbinÕs usual place of abode and the sdd deft being solemly called & failing to appear the plt in court made oath to his accounts aft the deft for four pounds eight shillings & three pence half penny curt money. It is thereupon considered by the court that these pltf recover agt thee deft Albin the sd sum of four pounds eight shillings & three pence half penny curt money & costs and the said deft in mercy & the sheriff having returned the deft Taylor not found, this suit as to him is ordered to be dismisd.Õ  Now William Albin was left liable for the debt. Apparently he did not have the money to pay the debt, so he set out to collect some that were due him which had not been paid.

Ò Saturday the 11th day of August 1753. Albin vs Lemon, judgment. William Albin agst James Lemon, on petition. The dft. being solemnly called & failing to appear, the pltf. made oath to his account for four pounds current money. It is thereupon considered by the court that the pltf. recover against the deft. the sum of four pounds currt. money together with his costs, afterwards the deft. appeared and prayed to be heard and offered to prove his acct. agst the plt. and was rejected.Ó  (9) (Lemon continued to petition the court but never could produce any evidence. His last petition was dismissed because Lemon, the plaintiff, was deceased). 4 September 1753. 'Richard Calvert made oath that he attended five days as a witness for William Albin in his suit brought by petition agt James Lemon at his motion. It is ordered that the said William pay him one hundred and twenty five pounds of tobacco, the same according to law.'  (10) The courts must have been overloaded for it to take five days to hear his plea. [Richard was probably our Ann CalvertÕs brother.]

Ò 8 Aug 1754. 'William Albin produced a certificate under the and of William Cocks, Gent, dated the 22nd day of June 1754 for taking up a Runaway servant belonging to Samuel Hammon of Prince William County above ten miles from his said masterÕs house and the said William Albin having made oath that he has received no satisfaction for his said claim it is ordered to be certified.'  (11) This appears to be a game of Ôtit for tatÕ. Cox was suing Albin, but Albin was saying that Cox owed him money. Cartmell in his Shenandoah Valley Pioneers and Their Descendants stated that it was a runaway slave that William Albin took up, but this original document shows us that it was instead a runaway indentured servant. . . .

Ò 3rd Aug 1756, 'John Baylis plt agt William Albin, on petition. The Dft failing to appear the plt produced his note, whereupon judgment is granted agt him for forty three shillings with lawful interest from the 27 day of March 1754 until paid and costs.' (12) (Baylis had surveyed William AlbinÕs land, this may be the payment due for that.) A shilling was worth about 12 to 16 cents, so the debt was about five or six dollars. Times were hard.

Ò Tuesday the 1st day of February 1757. 'Ann Helm, Thomas Helm, Wm. Helm, Adm. of Meredith Helm, deceased. Agst. John Jones, Jnoth Taylor, Jno Maddin, in debt. William Jolliffe, Jun. and William Albin, in open court undertook for the dft. Jonathan Taylor if he be cast in the sd. action that he shall pay the condemnation of the court for him where upon the sd dfts motion an importance is granted him until next court.'  (13) (Albin went bond for his close neighbor, Jonathan Taylor, a Quaker).

Ò Tuesday the 2nd day of August 1757, 'John Lindsey and Patrick Rice, Exec, of George Martin, decd. In debt against Stephen Pilcher and William Abin, dfts. James Carter and Jonathan Taylor in open court undertook for the dft William Albin if he be cast in the said action that he will pay the condemnation if the court or render his body to prison or that they the sd James and Jonathan will act for him or whereupon the dfts motion, Oyes is granted him.'  (14)(Jonathan Taylor is returning the favor. James Carter was the brother of Richard Carter, AlbinÕs brother-in-law. The nature of the debt is unknown, but it sounds like Albin had co-signed another note).

Ò 2d day of November 1757, 'William Cocks plt ag. William Albin, dft. On petition. This suit being agreed, is ordered to be dismissed.'  (William Albin has satisfactorily settled the account of William Taylor with Cocks.)

Ò In the matter of William Albin against Stephen Pilcher, he had to take a round-about-way to get his money: 'Upon the attachment of William Albon against Stephen Pilcher, the sheriff having returned that he had executed the said attachment in the hands of Henry Heth and summoned him as a garnishee. Whereupon the said Henry came into court and being sworn, declared that he is indebted to the said Stephen Pilcher the sum of forty shillings and the said Stephen failing to appear to display the same tho solemly called, the plaintiff made oath to his account. It is therefor considered by the court that the plaintiff recover against the said defendant the sum of ten pounds and his costs by him about his suit in the behalf expenses and it is ordered that the said Henry Heth do pay unto the said plaintiff the said sum of forty shillings towards satisfying this judgment.' . . .  (16)

Ò In 1764, William Albin, John Parrell, and Joseph Parrell, were appointed by the Frederick County Court to 'view the ground leading from Lewis NeillÕs Mill to the town of Winchester, and make their report. Whereupon it is ordered that a road be opened, this by them said of, and that the titheables two miles and a half on each side thereof work thereon under William Albin, who is appointed overseer of the same.'  (17) [John and Joseph Parrell were probably the brothers of our Sarah Parrell who married John Bruce.] The following year, in June 1765, the court order book stated: 'John ParrellÕs appointed overseer of the road from Lewis NeillÕs Mill to Thomas PerryÕs Mill in the room of William Albin, deceased.'  (18) [in the room of meant in place of] The exact date of WilliamÕs death is unknown, but it probably occurred shortly before that date. He probably was in his early fifties at the time of his death. His oldest son, John as then about twenty-five, his youngest, George was seven, Mary, his wife, was fifty. . . .

Ò Since William left no will and no other records have been found that would tell us who his children were, it has been necessary to rely on circumstantial evidence. As far as can be determined, there was no other Albin who came into Frederick County during the Colonial period. One can presume then that the young men who appeared on the scene a generation later, were his sons. All evidence seems to substantiate this. All seem to have lived in the area where his land lay, near Red Bud Run and the Opeckon. After they left the area they often lived near former Frederick County people and married into former Frederick County families.Ó

[124] Rachel David was born in 10 Oct 1749 in Fox Hall Plantation, Kent Co., DE, the dau. of James and Catherine David. Another record states she was born in Earleville, Saint Stephens Parish, Cecil Co., MD. Cecil Co., MD, is where John ÒElbinÓ paid land taxes in 1783. Rachel married an Elbourn, but I donÕt know his name. She had son James Elbourn who could have been born 1769, or at least it isnÕt an impossibility. The Rachel Elbourns that I had mentioned earlier were all of the 1800s and in Salem Co., NJ. I wonder who this family was. IÕll keep it in my records. I see that there was an Elborn family in Earleville, MD, in the 20th century: Deena M. Elborn b. 18 May 1955, Eric C. Elborn, Marguerit B. Elborn b. 16 Jul 1934, Carolyn R. Elborn b. 30 Nov 1959, Lori A. Elborn b. 20 Apr 1965, Robert H. Elborn b. 23 Jun 1929, Robert S. Elborn, b. 18 Jan 1957, Tuzette A. Elborn b. 8 Dec 1958, Edmond H. Elburn b. 3 Dec 1962, Suzette A. Elborn b. 15 Jun 1960, Kyle M. Elborn b. 1 Sep 1959 in Kennedyville, MD, and more. ItÕs strange that I never heard of any of these people — IÕll keep their names handy, but I really would not like to work on yet another line. There are also a lot of 20th century Elbourns in Hartly, DE.
